The diagnosis of stator winding faults in inverter fed AC machines using an injected high frequency carrier signal is presented and analyzed in this paper. Measurement of the resulting high frequency negative sequence current (or alternatively of the negative sequence impedance) is used to detect turn faults at an incipient stage. Though sharing the same physical principles of similar techniques applied to line-connected machines, the use of a high frequency signal will be shown to present important advantages, such as providing the same performance almost independent of the fundamental excitation frequency, and drastically reducing the sensitivity to the working condition of the machine, i.e. torque and flux levels.

The Kerr electro-optic field mapping technique has been used to study space charge effects in high voltage pulsed propylene carbonate (C/sub 4/H/sub 6/O/sub 3/) using stainless steel parallel-plate electrodes. Measurements presented here were taken using a circular polariscope with aligned polarizers at room temperature (T/spl sim/20/spl deg/C) with average initial electric field strengths of E/sub 0//spl sim/52 kV/cm and for measurement times ranging from 10 /spl mu/s to 1 ms. The light intensity pictures were analyzed along a line in the center of the electrode gap. From the light intensity distribution the electric field and space charge were calculated as a function of position and time. The calculated space charge distributions show both positive and negative charge injections from the electrodes as well as bulk charge dissociation.

We present a model for analyzing and simulating the propagation of delays through several sectors of the Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center. Aircraft are represented as points moving along straight lines with constant velocity, and the air traffic controller is modelled as an action which can provide instantaneous heading and velocity changes to each aircraft. If the controller action is restricted to one velocity change per aircraft, we show that the problem of computing the time that the controller action must be applied in order to achieve an exact metering constraint on the spacing between aircraft, may be solved analytically. More generally, the problem of computing the time that controller action must be applied on each aircraft, in order to satisfy a metering constraint and minimize the overall arrival time, may be posed and solved as, a linear program. We show that cases involving heading change may be solved analytically using the theorem prover STeP. Finally, we validate our results through our simulator of air traffic control action in the Oakland Center.

We consider ad hoc wireless networks that use directional antennas and have limited energy resources. The performance objectives of such networks depend largely on the application. However, a robust performance measure is the total traffic volume that the network can deliver when all nodes are equipped with a finite and non-renewable amount of energy. We show that the network's lifetime can be extended significantly by incorporating a simple measure of a node's residual energy into the node's cost function. To explore quantitatively the advantage offered by the use of directional antennas over the case of omnidirectional antennas, we consider the case of connection-oriented multicast traffic. Building upon our prior work on multicasting algorithms, we introduce two protocols that exploit the use of directional antennas and evaluate their performance. We observe significant improvement with respect to the omnidirectional case.

A gate-driver capable of switching a MOSFET at 1 MHz is proposed. The main design issues such as propagation delay and pulse width distortion have been addressed. Particular attention has been given to miniaturization of the unit with the aim of integration into an integrated power converter. The design has also focused on extensive protection features for the MOSFET, such as over-current and thermal shutdown. An experimental prototype, which can switch MOSFETs up to 800 V, has been constructed and the results presented.

In this paper, we develop an architecture for a novel type of neural network which is known as simultaneous recurrent neural networks (SRNNs). Using this novel neural architecture, we propose a statistical approximation learning (SAL) method. The SRNNs have the capability to approximate non-smooth functions which cannot be approximated by using conventional multilayer perceptrons. However, most of the learning methods for the SRNNs are computationally expensive due to their inherent recursive calculations. To solve this problem, as an approximation learning method, the SAL method is proposed by using a statistical relation between the time-series of the network outputs and the network configuration parameters. Simulation results show that SRNNs trained by the proposed SAL method can learn a strongly nonlinear function efficiently within a practical computation time.

An essential factor in understanding the motor learning capability of humans, is the coordinate transformation learning of the visual feedback controller. Although a number of learning models for the visual feedback controller have been proposed, none has been able to establish a definitive approach. In our previous work, we have suggested a learning model that uses disturbance noise and the feedback error signal to learn the human visual feedback controller's coordinate transformation. However, the model does not fully consider the time delay in the visual feedback control loop. This paper presents a modified learning model taking into account the time delay and the convergence properties of the model. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Currently, several kilometers of interconnects are used to construct a state-of-the-art Si-based integrated circuit, which has up to 8 levels of metallization. The failure mechanisms and reliability of the different layers of metallization are assumed to be the same in circuit-level reliability analysis. Although this may be true in Al interconnects, it may not be so for Cu dual-damascene lines. In this paper, we report on differences in the failure mechanisms between the first (M1) and second (M2) levels of Cu metallization, and how it affects the overall circuit reliability for Cu metallization.
