As an effective technique to combat adverse effects of fading, provide diversity and increase the transmission rate, space-time coding (STC) has been gaining more and more attention. This paper presents efficient zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalization schemes to combat intersymbol interference (ISI) and obtain diversity gain in a system using symbol-level space-time block coding. General linear and decision feedback equalizers are derived with two transmit antennas and M receive antennas. The conditions are explored under which FIR channels can be equalized perfectly in noise-free environments. In order to estimate the system performance, upper bounds of bit error rate (BER) are derived. A training-aided method are proposed as well to estimate the channel state information (CSI) utilizing training sequences. Numerical results of the proposed techniques show significant performance improvement compared to the case without equalization, and show the tightness of the upper bounds along with the effectiveness of the channel estimation scheme.

The ability to autonomously generate and execute large angle attitude maneuvers, while operating under a number of celestial and dynamical constraints, is a key factor in the development of several future space platforms. In this paper we propose a randomized attitude slew planning algorithm for autonomous spacecraft, which is able to address a variety of pointing constraints, including bright object avoidance and ground link maintenance, as well as constraints on the control inputs and spacecraft states, and integral constraints such as those deriving from thermal control requirements. Moreover, through the scheduling of feedback control policies, the algorithm provides a consistent decoupling between low-level control and attitude motion planning, and is robust with respect to uncertainties in the spacecraft dynamics and environmental disturbances. Multimedia applications are fast becoming one of the dominating workloads for modern computer systems. Since these applications normally have large data sets and little data-reuse, many researchers believe that they have poor memory behavior compared to traditional programs, and that current cache architectures cannot handle them well. It is therefore important to quantitatively characterize the memory behavior of these applications in order to provide insights for future design and research of memory systems. However, very few results on this topic have been published. This paper presents a comprehensive research on the memory requirements of a group of programs that are representative of multimedia applications. These programs include a subset of the popular MediaBench suite and several large multimedia programs running on the Linux, Windows NT and Tru UNIX operating systems. We performed extensive measurement and trace-driven simulation experiments. We then compared the memory utilization of these programs to that of SPECint95 applications. We found that multimedia applications actually have better memory behavior than SPECint95 programs. The high cache hit rates of multimedia applications can be contributed to the following three factors. Most multimedia applications apply block partitioning algorithms to the input data, and work on small blocks of data that easily fit into the cache. Secondly, within these blocks, there is significant data reuse as well as spatial locality. The third reason is that a large number of references generated by multimedia applications are to their internal data structures, which are relatively small and can also easily fit into reasonably-sized caches.

We present the design, implementation and evaluation of a framework that uses JavaSpaces [1] to support this type of opportunistic adaptive parallel/distributed computing over networked clusters in a non-intrusive manner. The framework targets applications exhibiting coarse-grained parallelism and has three key features: (1) portability across heterogeneous platforms, (2) minimal configuration overheads for participating nodes, and (3) automated system state monitoring (using SNMP) to ensure nonintrusive behavior. Experimental results presented in this paper demonstrate that for applications that can be broken into coarse-grained, relatively independent tasks, the opportunistic adaptive parallel computing framework can provide performance gains. Furthermore, the results indicate that monitoring and reacting to the current system state minimizes the intrusiveness of the framework.

In this paper we propose an alternative approach for finding a near-optimal call admission policy that prioritizes handoff requests over new calls in a generic mobile cellular network. The performance measure is formed as a weighted linear function of new call and handoff call blocking probabilities. The problem is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process with average cost criterion. Then, a simulation-based learning algorithm based on temporal difference methodology is used to determine a near-optimal control policy online from interaction with the network without a priori knowledge or estimation of the dynamical model of the network. Simulations are provided to compare the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with two well-known resource-sharing policies: complete sharing and reservation policies (guard threshold). The learning algorithm adapts to traffic variations and this paper shows that it also gives very close blocking probabilities to the optimal guard threshold approach.

The paper presents a number of image processing and pattern recognition applications using coordinate logic filters which execute coordinate logic operations among the pixels of the image. These filters are very efficient in various 1D, 2D or higher-dimensional digital signal processing applications, such as noise removal, magnification, opening, closing, skeletonization, coding, edge detection, feature extraction, and fractal modeling. The key issue in the coordinate logic analysis of images is the method of fast successive filtering and managing of the residues. The desired processing is achieved by executing only direct logic operations among the pixels of the given image. Coordinate logic filters can be easily and quickly implemented using logic circuits or cellular automata; this is their primary advantage.

Robotic grippers that are capable of manipulating objects such as plant trays, fruits, vegetable and so on are required in MARS' greenhouse operation. Grasping and manipulation of objects have been a challenging task for robots. It is important that the manipulator performs these tasks accurately and faster without damaging the object. The complex grasping task can be defined as object contact control and manipulation subtasks. In this paper, object contact task is defined for the fingers in terms of following a trajectory accurately. On the other hand, the grasping task is defined in terms of maintaining a predefined applied force by the fingers so that the object is properly secured. A sophisticated controller is required for the grasping task since the process of grasping an object without apriori knowledge of the object's size, texture, and softness is rather difficult task. The proposed scheme consists of a feedforward action generating neural network (NN) that compensates for the nonlinear gripper and contact dynamics. The learning of this NN is performed on-line based on a critic signal so that a three-finger gripper track a predefined desired trajectory, which is specified in terms of a desired position and velocity for object contact control while it applies a desired force on the object for grasping. Novel NN weight tuning updates are derived for the action generating NN and a Lyapunov-based stability analysis is presented. Simulation results are shown for a three-finger gripper grasping an object.

The growth of the Internet and the advent of the computational "Grid" have made it possible to develop and deploy advanced computational collaboratories. These systems build on high-end computational resources and communication technologies underlying the Grid, and provide seamless and collaborative access to particular resources, services or applications. Integrating these "focused" collaboratories presents significant challenges. Key among these is the design and development of robust middleware support that addresses scalability, service discovery, security and access control, and interaction and collaboration management for consistent access. The authors first investigate the architecture of such a middleware that enables global (Web-based) access to collaboratories. They then present the design and implementation of a middleware substrate that enables a peer-to-peer integration of and global (collaborative) access to geographically distributed instances of the DISCOVER computational collaboratory for interaction and steering.

This paper presents an unified approach of estimating the mean extra RTDs (round trip delay) cycles that a data block needs, for a successful transmission. Two ARQ approaches (ACK-NAK-based ARQ and NAK-based ARQ) with multi-copy retransmissions scheme are investigated. The system throughput is estimated after the mean extra RTD calculation. The performance of various ARQ schemes with multi-copy retransmissions can be estimated and compared using the unified expressions obtained in this paper.

This paper proposes an adaptive control methodology using neural networks (NNs) for the available bit rate service class in an ATM network. Adaptive methodology is developed to control traffic where sources adjust their transmission rates in response to the feedback information from the network switches. Specifically, the ATM traffic at a given switch is modeled as a nonlinear discrete-time system, and a two-layer NN controller is designed to prevent congestion. Tuning methods are provided for the NN to estimate the unknown traffic. Mathematical analysis is given to demonstrate the stability of the closed-loop system so that a desired quality of service (QoS) can be guaranteed. No learning phase is required for the NN and initialization of the network weights is straightforward. Simulation results are provided to justify the theoretical conclusions for multiple source/single buffer scenario with and without feedback delays present.
