The application of microtechnology to biotechnology and biosensing has rapidly expanded in response to recent advances in molecular biology and biochemistry. Gene sequencing and drug discovery have created viable commercial markets for lab-on-a-chip and other miniature, high throughput, and/or low sample volume, analysis instruments. At UCDavis, scientists and engineers are utilizing the special capabilities of microtechnology, e.g. small feature size, reproducibility, parallel processing, and multi-functionality, to realize miniature instruments for biomolecular sensing and analysis. Photonic measurement techniques are being exploited for their demonstrated superior sensitivity. Several different types of photonic microinstruments for biomolecular analysis have been designed, fabricated and demonstrated, including a surface plasmon immunosensor, a multichannel combinatorial. bead analyzer, and a DNA quantification microinstrument. A brief description of their function, microfabrication, assembly, and testing are presented.

We present extensions to our previous work in modelling dynamical processes. The approach uses an information theoretic criterion for searching over subspaces of the past observations, combined with a nonparametric density characterizing its relation to one-step-ahead prediction and uncertainty. We use this methodology to model handwriting stroke data, specifically signatures, as a dynamical system and show that it is possible to learn a model capturing their dynamics for use either in synthesizing realistic signatures and in discriminating between signatures and forgeries even though no forgeries have been used in constructing the model. This novel approach yields promising results even for small training sets.

This paper presents selected design and operation details of a custom integrated neural chip. This neural processing chip is designed in the recent 0.18 /spl mu/m, single poly, six-layer Cu interconnect technology. The chip realizes an architecture that achieves the task of autonomous-learning execution times in micro to milli seconds. The core consists of basic building blocks of 4-quadrant multipliers, transconductance amplifiers, and active load resistances, for analog (forward) network processing and learning modules. Super-imposed on the processing network are digital memory and control modules composed of D-Flipflops, ADC, Multiplying D/A Converter (MDAC), decoders, multiplexers and comparators for parameter (weight) storage, logical control and analog/digital conversions.

Agent based computing offers the ability to decentralize computing solutions by incorporating autonomy and intelligence into cooperating, distributed applications. It provides an effective medium for expressing solutions to problems that involve interaction with real-world environments and allows modelling of the world state and its dynamics. This model can be then used to determine how candidate actions affect the world and how to choose the best from a set of actions. Most agent paradigms overlook real-time requirements and computing resource constraints. We discuss the application of agent based computing to RoboCup and examine methods to improve it. In particular, we discuss the incorporation of a meta-level reasoning mechanism that handles individual agent organization, plan generation, task allocation, integration and plan execution. We also propose an architecture where a meta-agent is further enhanced by combining it with system-level resource allocation and optimization. The approach adopted by us unifies agent based computing with adaptive resource management for dynamic real-time systems. The goal is to build and implement a distributed, intelligent, agent based system for dynamic real-time applications.

This paper presents a mechanism for active resource management (ARM) in a differentiated services environment.. While the differentiated services architecture and the bandwidth broker agent provide a mechanism for QoS management through resource reservation, this mechanism is based on a static provisioning of resources. As bandwidth requirements are typically dynamic, such a static reservation approach can either lead to wasted bandwidth or leave applications resource-starved. The active resource management approach presented in this paper addresses this problem by dynamically, reallocating resources based on current network state and applications requirements. An implementation and evaluation of ARM using the NS-2 simulation toolkit is also presented.

The energy efficient MAC algorithm is based on reservation and scheduling for wireless ad-hoc networks. In this paper, we drive the optimal threshold energy level for the Pseudo Base Station (PBS) reselection in the energy efficient MAC through mathematical analysis.

Presents the first on-line BIST and BIST-based diagnostic approach for the programmable interconnect resources in FPGAs. This interconnect BIST is used in the roving STARs approach. The technique provides a complete BIST of the programmable interconnect followed by high-resolution diagnostics to support reconfiguration around the fault for fault-tolerant applications. We have successfully implemented this BIST approach on the ORCA 2C series FPGA and present the results of testing and diagnosing known defective FPGAs.

Area and power of data storage elements can be excessively large in many data intensive DSP ASICs, such as high-throughput pipelined-FFTs and data interleavers. In this paper, we present a low-complexity multi-port data buffer design methodology based on dynamic memory configuration that results in small area and low power overhead by adapting the buffer architecture to the data access requirements. The buffer minimizes the number of transistors and simplifies-the interface between memory core and external digital circuitry. The buffer can be designed with a low cost digital circuit processing technology. To evaluate our methodology, we designed a buffer for data interleaver and pipelined FFT that requires high throughput. We compare the buffer with conventional buffers based on static memory.

In the future, voice communication is expected to migrate from the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to the Internet. Because of the particular characteristics (low volume and burstiness) and stringent delay and loss requirements of voice traffic, it is important to separate voice traffic from other traffic in the network by providing it with a separate queue. In this study, we conduct a thorough assessment of voice delay in this context. We conclude that priority queuing is the most appropriate scheduling scheme for the handling of voice traffic, while preemption of non-voice packets is strongly recommended for sub-10 Mbit/s links. We also find that per-connection custom packetization is in most cases futile, i.e. one packet size allows a good compromise between an adequate end-to-end delay and an efficient bandwidth utilization for voice traffic.
