This study is an effort to give a practical solution in the problem of optimizing the structure of the hierarchical mixture of experts model, which is a natural extension of the associative Gaussian mixture of experts system. We present two novel methods for optimizing such structures using genetic algorithms. Special concern is taken for reducing the computational time so as to efficiently allow the structure to "grow" while it evolves with the genetic algorithm. The main contribution of the paper lies on the efficient, topologically oriented, representations of such architectures so as to be optimized through involving genetic algorithms.

We earlier introduced a novel framework for realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) in human-automation interaction (HAI). This study presents an expert system for realization of AA, using Support Vector Machine (SVM), referred to as Adaptive Autonomy Support Vector Machine Expert System (AASVMES). The proposed system prescribes proper Levels of Automation (LOAs) for various environmental conditions, here modeled as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs), based on the extracted rules from the experts' judgments. SVM is used as an expert system inference engine. The practical list of PSFs and the judgments of GTEDC's (the Greater Tehran Electric Distribution Company) experts are used as expert system database. The results of implemented AASVMES in response to GTEDC's network are evaluated against the GTEDC experts' judgment. Evaluations show that AASVMES has the ability to predict the proper LOA for GTEDC's Utility Management Automation (UMA) system, which changes in relevance to the changes in PSFs; thus providing an adaptive LOA scheme for UMA.

We introduce a robotic lake lander test bed that can be operated either stand-alone or as part of a Tier-Scalable Reconnaissance mission architecture to study and field test an integrated hardware and software framework for fully autonomous surface and subsurface exploration and navigation of liquid bodies. The lake lander is equipped with both surface and subsurface sensor technologies. Our particular focus is on Saturn's moon Titan with its hydrocarbon lakes with respect to future missions involving lake landers (e.g., Titan Mare Explorer (TiME) mission), potentially in conjunction with balloons/airships and orbiter-support overhead. This test bed serves as an analog to a Titan unpiloted surface vessel equipped with its own onboard real-time navigation and hazard avoidance system, surface and subsurface exploration sensor suite, and autonomous science investigation software system. As such the test bed helps map out a technical path toward true autonomy for the robotic exploration of the Solar System.

Since Witsenhausen put forward his remarkable counterexample in 1968, there have been many attempts to develop efficient methods for solving this non-convex functional optimization problem. However there are few methods designed from game theoretic perspectives. In this paper, after discretizing the Witsenhausen counterexample and re-writing the formulation in analytical expressions, we use fading memory JSFP with inertia, one learning approach in games, to search for better controllers from a view of potential games. We achieve a better solution than the previously known best one. Moreover, we show that the learning approaches are simple and automated and they are easy to extend for solving general functional optimization problems.

The goal of this research is to develop a multi-layer feedforward neural network architecture which can distinguish targets (in this case, mines) from background clutter in sidescan sonar images. The network is to be implemented on a hardware neurocomputer currently in development at CSDL, with the goal of eventual real-time performance in the field. A variety of neural network architectures are developed, simulated, and evaluated in an attempt to find the best approach for this particular application. It has been found that classical statistical feature extraction is outperformed by a much less computationally expensive approach that simultaneously compresses and filters the raw data by taking a simple mean.< >

The SCHEMA Network of Excellence aims to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the integration of four segmentation algorithms and the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model with the reference system are discussed, along with the motivation behind these and various other choices that were made during the development of the reference system. Experimental results for this system, as well as results for an earlier version of it employing proprietary descriptors, are shown using a common collection of images. Comparative evaluation of these versions, both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency, allows the evaluation of the reference system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with it, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. These results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system, as well as its suitability in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information.

We present a novel implementation of an adaptive generalized sidelobe canceller beamformer, using a coupled nonlinear oscillator array in conjunction with an antenna array. This beamformer is applied in a narrowband wireless communication context, where there is contamination due to transmissions from similar systems. We have applied a least mean square like algorithm to compute weight updates so as to reject the interfering signals while maintaining the desired beam. The actual update of the beamformer weights is performed indirectly, via adjustment of the coupling parameters of the coupled nonlinear oscillator array. computer simulations of the proposed approach are presented for a narrowband communication system. The simulation results show successful adaptation towards the rejection of the interfering communication signals

This paper presents SubPipe, an underwater dataset for SLAM, object detection, and image segmentation. SubPipe has been recorded using a lightweight autonomous underwater vehicle (LAUV), operated by OceanScan MST, and carrying a sensor suite including two cameras, a side-scan sonar, and an inertial navigation system, among other sensors. The AUV has been deployed in a pipeline inspection environment with a submarine pipe partially covered by sand. The AUV's pose ground truth is estimated from the navigation sensors. The side-scan sonar and RGB images include object detection and segmentation annotations, respectively. State-of-the-art segmentation, object detection, and SLAM methods are benchmarked on SubPipe to demonstrate the dataset's challenges and opportunities for leveraging computer vision algorithms. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first anno-tated underwater dataset providing a real pipeline inspection scenario.
