We consider the regulation control problem for a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF), underactuated overhead crane system. Inspired by recently designed passivity-based controllers for underactuated systems, we design several controllers that asymptotically regulate the gantry position and payload position. Specifically, utilizing LaSalle's invariance set theorem, we first illustrate how a simple proportional-derivative (PD) controller can be utilized to asymptotically regulate the overhead crane system. Motivated by the desire to achieve improved transient performance, we then design a two nonlinear controllers that increase the coupling between the gantry position and payload position.

This paper investigates the energy-efficient beamforming design in a simultaneous transmission and reflection-reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted wireless communication system, where the antenna selection scheme is adopted. An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated by optimizing the transmit beamformers and the phase shift vectors subject to the power budget constraint of the base station (BS), the maximum transmit power constraint per antenna and the users' data rate requirements. An alternating optimization-based algorithm is proposed to tackle the coupled variables, and the quadratic transform is used to deal with the fractional formulations. Simulation results demonstrate that the antenna selection scheme can significantly improve the EE performance by suppressing the energy consumption due to massive antennas. With the assistance of the STAR-RIS, the EE performance is further enhanced.

Miniaturized autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are an emerging and trending topic. With their form factor as big as the palm of one hand, they can reach spots otherwise inaccessible to bigger robots and safely operate in human surroundings. The simple electronics aboard such robots (sub-100 mW) make them particularly cheap and attractive but pose significant challenges in enabling onboard sophisticated intelligence. In this work, we leverage a novel neural architecture search (NAS) technique to automatically identify several Pareto-optimal convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for a visual pose estimation task. Our work demonstrates how reallife and field-tested robotics applications can concretely leverage NAS technologies to automatically and efficiently optimize CNNs for the specific hardware constraints of small UAVs. We deploy several NAS-optimized CNNs and run them in closed-loop aboard a 27-g Crazyflie nano-UAV equipped with a parallel ultra-low power System-on-Chip. Our results improve the State-of-the-Art by reducing the in-field control error of 32% while achieving a real-time onboard inference-rate of ~10Hz@10mW and ~50Hz@90mW.

A design of compact size and multi-band composite right-left handed meta-material antennas for wireless applications is presented. The proposed antenna consists of single left handed cell. The series interdigital capacitor and short circuit stub which acts as shunt inductor are considered the main block of the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at different frequency bands. Because of the nonlinearity of the left handed region of the composite right left handed transmission line, the compactness of the antenna has been achieved. The proposed antenna has compact size (its size is only 28 × 22 mm 2 ). The design represents size reduction of approximately 60 % compared to conventional patch antennas operating at the same frequencies. The antenna is designed, simulated and measured. A good agreement is achieved between the measured and simulated results.

Single microphone speech enhancement systems have typically shown limited performance, while multiple microphone systems based on a least-squares error criterion have shown encouraging results in some contexts. In this paper we formulate a new approach to multiple microphone speech enhancement. Specifically, we formulate a maximum likelihood (ML) problem for estimating the parameters needed for canceling the noise in a two microphone speech enhancement system. This ML problem is solved via the iterative EM (Estimate-Maximize) technique. The resulting algorithm shows encouraging results when applied to the speech enhancement problem.

During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust $H_{\infty}$ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller's effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction.

In this paper, we present an analytical method to evaluate the quality performance of flexible manufacturing systems with batch operations. Many flexible manufacturing systems implement batch production to shorten changeover time, reduce cost, and improve quality. In such systems, different types of products are process in batches where all products in each batch have the same type. The change of product type only occurs after the last job in a batch is processed. A closed formula to quantify the probability of producing a good part is derived and structural properties to address the appropriate sequence of products are presented.

This paper proposes incentive mechanisms that promote eco-driving in transportation networks with the overarching objective of minimizing emissions. The transportation system operator provides the drivers with energy-efficient driving guidance throughout their trips, and their eco-driving levels are measured by how closely they follow this guidance via vehicle telematics. Drivers choose their eco-driving levels to optimize a combination of their travel times and their emissions. To obtain optimal budget allocation and recommendations for the incentive mechanism, the system operator gathers drivers’ preferences, or types, to assess each driver’s trip urgency and natural willingness to eco-drive. In a setting where drivers truthfully report their types, we introduce the first-best incentive mechanism and show that the obedience condition holds (i.e., drivers find it optimal to comply with the system operator’s recommendations) when the recommended eco-driving profile constitutes a Nash equilibrium. Moreover, in a setting where drivers can strategically report their types, we introduce the second-best incentive mechanism and show that the proposed mechanism is incentive-compatible (i.e., drivers find it optimal to be truthful). Under this mechanism, we also show that all equilibrium outcomes are at least as good as the recommended eco-driving profile in terms of the system operator’s objective. Overall, this work offers a framework for designing eco-driving incentive mechanisms while considering both the strategic behavior of individual drivers and the network effects of collective decision-making. © 2024, CC BY.

We review recent physics-based, analytical DC models for amorphous silicon (a-Si), polysilicon (poly-Si), and organic thin film transistors (TFTs), developed for the design of novel ultra high-resolution, large area displays using advanced short-channel TFTs. In particular, we emphasize the modeling issues related to the main short-channel effects, such as self-heating (a-Si TFTs) and kink effect (a-Si and poly-Si TFTs), which are present in modern TFTs. The models have been proved to accurately reproduce the DC characteristics of a-Si:H with gate lengths down to 4 μm and poly-Si TFTs with gate lengths down to 2 μm. Because the scalability of the models and the use of continuous expressions for describing the characteristics in all operating regimes, the models are suitable for implementation in circuit simulators such as SPICE.
