We present a thin-format optical fingerprint image sensor based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) n-i-p photo-diode technology. The fingerprint sensor has resolution of 403 dpi. Optical Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data obtained for an edge-light illuminated sensor structure shows that the fingerprint image is formed by total internal reflection (TIR) of photons in finger skin valleys. Conversely, for a back-light illuminated sensor structure the image is formed by reflection of photons in finger skin ridges. Finally, a fingerprint sensor prototype has been built to demonstrate these two types of sensor technology.

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the heavy metal (HM) and ferromagnetic metal (FM) interface has been recognized as a key ingredient in spintronic applications. Here we investigate the chemical trend of DMI on the 5d band filling (5d3–5d10) of the HM element in HM/FM (FM=CoFeB,Co)/MgO multilayer thin films. DMI is quantitatively evaluated by measuring asymmetric spin wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Sign reversal and 20 times modification of the DMI coefficient D have been measured as the 5d HM element is varied. The chemical trend can be qualitatively understood by considering the 5d and 3d bands alignment at the HM/FM interface and the subsequent orbital hybridization around the Fermi level. Furthermore, a correlation is observed between DMI and effective spin mixing conductance at the HM/FM interfaces. Our results provide new insights into the interfacial DMI for designing future spintronic devices.

Autonomous inspection of dark, confined, and feature-poor spaces requires robotic platforms to utilize accurate and reliable localization systems for safe and reliable operation. This paper presents an absolute localization system for highly feature-poor spaces, using visual inertial odometry and GPU-based point cloud registrations for limited field-of-view sensors. The extracted structural elements from sensor scans, along side IMU measurements, are used to limit the search area for the GPU-based point cloud registrations. We employ Stein-ICP which is an uncertainty aware variant of ICP. The 3D registrations are then fused with a visual-inertial odometry estimate in an Extended Kalman Filter to provide a fast and accurate absolute pose estimate. The proposed localization system is tested in both a simulated environment and in a mock-up model of a chemical distillation column - both highly feature-poor areas.

This paper focuses on developing a passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device prototype, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for in-service monitoring and failure identifying against fiber fault in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

A passive tapper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Generative AI (GAI) can enhance the cognitive, reasoning, and planning capabilities of intelligent modules in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) by synthesizing augmented datasets, completing sensor data, and making sequential decisions. In addition, the mixture of experts (MoE) can enable the distributed and collaborative execution of AI models without performance degradation between connected vehicles. In this survey, we explore the integration of MoE and GAI to enable Artificial General Intelligence in IoV, which can enable the realization of full autonomy for IoV with minimal human supervision and applicability in a wide range of mobility scenarios, including environment monitoring, traffic management, and autonomous driving. In particular, we present the fundamentals of GAI, MoE, and their interplay applications in IoV. Furthermore, we discuss the potential integration of MoE and GAI in IoV, including distributed perception and monitoring, collaborative decision-making and planning, and generative modeling and simulation. The analytical evaluation of the average bit error rate (ABER) performance of a digital multihop transmission system operating in the presence of co-channel interference and Rayleigh fading is presented. It is assumed that the number of interferers at each relay node and the destination is a binomial random variable that belongs to a binomial point process. Analytical expressions for the ABER of Amplify-and-Forward and Decode-and-Forward relaying in terms of a single integral that can be easily evaluated numerically, are derived. An asymptotic analysis is employed to obtain simple ABER approximations and optimize the power allocation and location of the relays. Finally, the analytical results are validated with computer simulations.

The first successful demonstration of virus-structured, hierarchical electrodes for three-dimensional (3-D) Li-ion microbattery architectures is reported in this paper. The electrodes consist of electroplated gold micropillars and virus-structured nanocomposite materials with a TiO2 anode layer deposited on a nickel-coated viral template. Micropatterning increases the active electrode surface area and electrochemical characterization results verify an improvement in microbattery capacity by up to a factor of four compared to nanostructures alone. © 2011 IEEE.

In wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the knowledge of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) plays an important role for system optimization. Most of the exiting literatures have studied the SNR estimation for perfect synchronization in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, or in frequency selective channels. However, the realistic channels are always doubly selective, and there may exist some residual symbol timing offset (STO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) after coarse synchronization in the time domain. In this paper, we take these into account and propose a time-domain average SNR estimation scheme using one OFDM training symbol (preamble) which has been divided into multiple parts with equal length. Compared with the timedomain low-complexity SNR estimator (TLSE), our proposed time-domain preamble-based SNR estimator (TPSE) can not only be implemented in the presence of STO and CFO, but also generate more accurate SNR estimation for the channels with large Doppler shift. The estimated SNR value based on our scheme in the time-domain can be further reused to improve the ensuing CFO estimation and fine synchronization efficiently.
