The focus of this invited keynote paper (to be presented by H. J. Siegel) is mixed-machine heterogeneous computing, where a suite of different kinds of high-performance machines are interconnected by high-speed links. Such a system can be orchestrated to perform an application whose subtasks have diverse execution requirements. Subtasks are assigned to and executed on the machines that will result an a minimal overall execution time for the task, considering factors including anter-machine communication overhead. A conceptual model of the automatic decomposition of tasks and assignment of subtasks is presented. Examples of static and dynamic approaches to the matching and scheduling of subtasks are summarized. Some open research problems are dascussed. © 1998 IEEE

New shift-invariant distortion-invariant Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) filters for detection are described. They employ new modified Minimum Noise and Correlation Energy (MINACE) filters. Test results are provided for real SAR data with 360 degrees aspect views of two different objects and for 100 real SAR clutter chips (natural and man-made) that passed the second stage of the Lincoln laboratory's SAR processor. We obtained high detection rates P-D=100% and few false alarms P-FA less than or equal to 0.82% using only three filters per object class. The shift-invariance of the filters allow their use as adjuncts for all stages (detection, discrimination, classification) of a SAR image processor. Classification results are also briefly reported. Necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for a pair of transfer functions to have magnitude responses which sum to a constant. If, in addition, the transfer function pair is constrained to be all-pass complementary, the transfer function pair so obtained is well suited for loudspeaker crossover applications. Such crossover systems are characterized by a pair of transfer functions which exhibit the same phase angle at all frequencies. This property has twofold implications: i) in active crossover biamplified audio systems, whereby the low frequencies and high frequencies are reproduced using separate power amplifiers, in-phase crossover transfer functions require less power in subsequent amplifier stages than other designs to achieve a given acoustic sound pressure level; and ii) the summed acoustic magnitude response is least sensitive to noncoincidental mounting of the low- and high-frequency transducers when the crossover transfer functions exhibit the same phase angle at all frequencies. The class of transfer functions realizable is quite wide, and includes squared versions of Butterworth, Chebyshev, and elliptic transfer functions of all orders.

Breakthrough-quality scientific discoveries in the new millennium (such as those expected in computation biology and others), along with optimal engineering designs, have created a demand for High-End Computing (HEC) systems with sustained performance requirements at a petaflop scale and beyond. Despite the very pessimistic (if not negative) views on parallel computing systems that have prevailed in 1990s, there seems to be no other viable alternatives for such HEC systems. In this talk, we present a fresh look at the problems facing the design of petascale parallel computing systems. We review several fundamental issues that such HEC parallel computing systems must resolve. These issues include: execution models that support dynamic and adaptive multithreading, fine-grain synchronization, and global name-space and memory consistency. Related issues in parallel programming, dynamic compilation models, and system software design will also be discussed. Present solutions and future direction will be discussed based on (1) application demand (e.g. computation biology and others), (2) the recent trend as demonstrated by the HTMT, HPCS, and the Blue-Gene Cyclops (e.g. Cyclops-64) architectures, and (3) a historical perspective on influential models such as dataflow, along with concepts learned from these models.

A new class of applications is described which requires cooperation among diverse users in multiple data and problem instance domains. The hierarchy of parallelism includes heterogeneity within a single instance of the problem, homogeneity among subsets of users within a problem domain, and multiple problem domains which share computational resources - software and hardware. The core of the architecture is a socket-server which registers clients and servers (both statically and dynamically), and assures isolation of users in separate problem domains. The users all see the system as a set of functions accessible via the WWW. The particular problem of genetic linkage analysis is used as a case study to illustrate and implement the architecture. GenoMap, the first implementation of this system is being deployed for several groups of cooperating users at multiple institutions in a study to isolate the genomic locus of the controlling gene(s) in several diseases including autism. More than 400 genetic markers are being analyzed from more than 300 individuals in this study. The users span geneticists, clinical physicians, statisticians, disease specialists, laboratory technicians, and computer scientists/engineers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Using the causal domain to specify and verify distributed programs

A system for specification and proof of distributed programs is presented. The method is based directly on the partial order of local states (poset) and avoids the notions of time and simultaneity. Programs are specified by documenting the relationship between local states which are adjacent to each other in the poset. Program properties are defined by stating properties of the poset. Many program properties can be expressed succinctly and elegantly using this method because poset properties inherently account for varying processor execution speeds. The system utilizes a proof technique which uses induction on the complement of the causally precedes relation and is shown to be useful in proving poset properties. We demonstrate the system on three example algorithms: vector clocks, mutual exclusion, and direct dependency clocks.

Precise cell classification is essential in biomedical diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring, particularly for identifying diverse cell types involved in various diseases. Traditional cell classification methods such as flow cytometry depend on molecular labeling which is often costly, time-intensive, and can alter cell integrity. To overcome these limitations, we present a label-free machine learning framework for cell classification, designed for real-time sorting applications using bright-field microscopy images. This approach leverages a teacher-student model architecture enhanced by knowledge distillation, achieving high efficiency and scalability across different cell types. Demonstrated through a use case of classifying lymphocyte subsets, our framework accurately classifies T4, T8, and B cell types with a dataset of 80,000 preprocessed images, accessible via an open-source Python package for easy adaptation. Our teacher model attained 98% accuracy in differentiating T4 cells from B cells and 93% accuracy in zero-shot classification between T8 and B cells. Remarkably, our student model operates with only 0.02% of the teacher model’s parameters, enabling field-programmable gate array (FPGA) deployment. Our FPGA-accelerated student model achieves an ultra-low inference latency of just 14.5 µs and a complete cell detection-to-sorting trigger time of 24.7 µs, delivering 12x and 40x improvements over the previous state-of-the-art real-time cell analysis algorithm in inference and total latency, respectively, while preserving accuracy comparable to the teacher model. This framework provides a scalable, cost-effective solution for lymphocyte classification, as well as a new SOTA real-time cell sorting implementation for rapid identification of subsets using in situ deep learning on off-the-shelf computing hardware. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper investigates the differentially private problem of the average consensus for a class of discrete-time multi-agent network systems(MANSs). Based on the MANSs,a new distributed differentially private consensus algorithm(DPCA) is developed. To avoid continuous communication between neighboring agents, a kind of intermittent communication strategy depending on an event-triggered function is established in our DPCA. Based on our algorithm, we carry out the detailed analysis including its convergence, its accuracy, its privacy and the trade-off between the accuracy and the privacy level, respectively. It is found that our algorithm preserves the privacy of initial states of all agents in the whole process of consensus computation. The trade-off motivates us to find the best achievable accuracy of our algorithm under the free parameters and the fixed privacy level. Finally, numerical experiment results testify the validity of our theoretical analysis.

Channel theory is a fundamental theory of wireless communications. The sixth generation (6G) and beyond 6G (B6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide space-air-ground-sea global coverage. Base stations and users tend to move in three dimensional (3D) continuous spaces, while antennas and propagation environments can be tightly coupled. The underlying channels show an evolutionary trend to 3D continuous-space radio channels that combine antennas and wireless propagation channels, in comparison to discrete local-space wireless propagation channels in previous generations. This introduces new challenges for channel modeling, channel capacity analysis, antenna design, system design, etc. To address these challenges, this paper performs a comprehensive study on 3D continuous-space radio channels in 6G/B6G with the aid of electromagnetic information theory (EIT) that integrates electromagnetic theory, information theory, wireless propagation channel modeling theory, and antenna theory. We start by revealing the connections and gaps between these four fundamental theories. Then, an in-depth investigation on the four major research thrusts of 3D continuous-space radio channels is provided: 1) channel measurements and modeling, 2) channel capacity analysis, 3) general antenna design, and 4) wireless system design. We aim to explore the intrinsic relationships between antenna parameters, channel parameters, channel characteristics, channel capacity, and communication system performance. Finally, future research directions and challenges for 3D continuous-space radio channels are outlined. Our study endeavors to establish a fundamental framework for 3D continuous-space radio channels, with the potential to catalyze breakthroughs in 6G/B6G theories. © 1998-2012 IEEE.
