In this paper, the 2D polar wavelet transform is proposed for content based search and retrieval of 3D objects. After the decomposition of a 3D object's volume into a set of planes, the 2D polar wavelet transform is applied to each of them, generating a set of 2D rotation invariant features. These features comprise the input to the spherical trace transform for the final descriptor extraction, which is used for the shape matching. The 2D wavelet transform demonstrated experimentally a high discriminative power, as compared to other existing methods.

In this paper, we present visual tool for performance measurement and analysis of MPI parallel programs in cluster environments. Most of tools available today for cluster systems show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server average load, among others), being more suitable for system administrators who maintain such system. The visual tool is designed to show performance data of all computer nodes involved in the execution of MPI parallel program, such as CPU load level and memory usage. Additionally, this tool is able to display comparative performance data charts of multiple executions of the application (instrumented with MPI interface) under development.

In this paper a 3D shape-based approach is presented for the efficient search, retrieval and classification of protein molecules. The method relies on the geometric 3D appearance of the proteins, which is produced from the corresponding PDB files. After proper positioning and alignment of the 3D structures, in terms of translation and scaling, the 3D structures are decomposed into planes. Then, the polar Fourier transform is applied to the planes creating a new domain of concentric spheres. In this new domain a set of functionals is applied so as to produce descriptor vectors, which are completely invariant to rotation and perfectly describe their 3D shape. Experimental results performed using a portion of the FSSP/DALI database shoed that the proposed method achieves more than 98% classification accuracy with less complexity and much simplicity and it is very fast comparing with the DALI method.

A multilayer canopy scattering model is developed for mixed-species forests. The multilayer model provides a significantly enhanced representation of actual complex forest structures compared to the conventional canopy-trunk layer models. Multilayer Michigan Microwave Canopy Scattering model (Multi-MIMICS) allows overlapping layer configuration and a tapered trunk model applicable to forests of mixed species and/or mixed growth stages. The model is the first-order solution to a set of radiative transfer equations and includes layer interactions between overlapping layers. It simulates SAR backscattering coefficients based on input dimensional, geometrical, and dielectric variables of forest canopies. The Multi-MIMICS is an efficient realization of actual forest structures and can be shaped for specific interest of forest parameters. We present the model's application and validation in the paper. The model is parameterized using data collected from a 220 000-ha area of forests in central Queensland, Australia. Fifteen 50 × 50 m test sites representing the general forest diversity and growth stages are chosen as ground truth. Polarimetric backscattering Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) data of the same area are acquired to validate the model simulations. The model predicts SAR backscattering coefficients of the test areas. Simulation results show a good agreement with AIRSAR data at most frequencies and polarizations. The simulated backscattering coefficient from the multilayer model and the standard MIMICS are also compared and significant improvements are observed. © 2005 IEEE.

We propose in this paper a new video shot boundary classification (SBC) method. First we present a method to extract features, which exploits the spatial-temporal information of video frames in a sliding window centered at the detected shot boundary. Then feature projection and classification methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) combined with k-nearest neighbor classification, and hierarchical discriminant regression (HDR) are proposed to classify different types of shot boundaries. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed SBC method.

A new video coding standard, H.264/AVC, has recently been standardized. It achieves its high coding efficiency by employing a number of advances in video coding technology. We propose an efficient rate control method for MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC transcoding. Specifically, the values of quantization parameters for I and B frames are computed adaptively based on the side information from the precoded video. Simulations show that our proposed method can meet the target bitrate accurately and achieves a better performance than the rate control scheme of the reference software, H.264/AVC JM 7.4, without increasing the complexity.

In content-based video analysis, shot boundary detection (SBD) is a common first step to segment a video into fundamental units of shots, each composing consecutive frames filmed with a single camera act. Many methods have been proposed in the literature for SBD, and many require the use of different models to determine the types of various shot boundaries. In this paper, we propose a new and effective shot boundary classification (SBC) and refinement method by analyzing the inter-frame similarity patterns around the detected shot boundaries. In particular, the proposed method can classify the detected shot boundaries into five types-shot cuts, wipes, dissolves, fades, and non-boundaries-using a more generic and accurate manner, and the non-boundaries obtained in the classification can be used to refine the SBD results by eliminating the false detections to attain a better detection performance, as evidenced by the experimental results presented

A number of video browsing and retrieval systems use a hierarchical video structure (video, scene, group, shot, and keyframe) as the basis for information organization and access. However, this structure cannot represent and manage efficiently the videos recorded from TV channels, since TV videos are usually very long and consist of many scenes. More importantly, people tend to watch these videos by program and not by scenes or shots. To address this problem, we insert a new structure level, referred to as program, between the video and scene level to enhance the hierarchical structure representation. An automatic program segmentation algorithm is presented for constructing the video structure in this paper. Experimental results based on real-world TV videos demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

An FIR cascade structure for adaptive linear prediction is studied in which each stage FIR filter is independently adapted using an LMS algorithm. Theoretical analysis shows that the cascade performs a linear prediction in a way of successive refinement and each stage tries to obliterate the dominant mode of its input. Experimental results show that the performance of the cascade LMS predictor are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis.
