The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for contentbased semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, recent advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the first and the second version of the reference system are presented and the motivation behind the different approaches followed during the development of these two versions is discussed. Experimental results for both systems, using a common collection of images, are shown. Additionally, a comparative evaluation of the two versions both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency is performed, allowing the evaluation of the system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with the reference system, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. This illustrates the suitability of the SCHEMA reference system in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information, ranging from segmentation algorithms to indexing features and methodologies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper describes a novel method for 3D model content-based search and retrieval based on the 3D radon transform and a querying-by-3D-model approach. Descriptors are extracted using the 3D radon transform and applying a number of functionals on the transform's coefficients. Similarity measures are then created for the extracted descriptors and introduced into a 3D model-matching algorithm. This results in a very fast and accurate matching method. Experimental results are presented evaluating the performance of the proposed method in terms of precision versus recall diagrams.

Anomaly detection finds target pixels whose signatures are spectrally distinct from their surrounding pixels. It is generally performed without prior knowledge. This paper presents an adaptive causal anomaly detector (ACAD) which implements a causal anomaly detector in such a fashion that a target pixel will be removed from the data correlation matrix once it is detected as an anomaly. As a result, it improves the commonly used RX algorithm as well as a recently developed causal RX filter

Due to the explosive growth of the Internet, stream services are becoming more popular. The large media servers supporting thousands of concurrent media streams have to satisfy us with both good throughout and high availability. Although they are reciprocal from the viewpoint of system performance, the stream service continuity, as well as throughput, should be considered in clustered media servers. This is because media stream services should be continuously available to the clients even on the event of system failure. In this paper, we introduce service availability as the gauge of service degree on media servers, and present the basic scheme for guaranteeing continuous stream service. To do this, we propose LSS(Log Stream Status) and RRD(Ready Resource for instant Delivery) mechanisms. They are classified according to the status management method of stream service and the resumption method of closed service. Although these mechanisms require additional overhead, we found that they can be applied to clustered media servers with minimum overhead. Additionally, we concluded that they can provide higher quality of service availability on traditional clustered media servers.

Techniques that treat the face holistically as a vector of pixel values, which we refer to as a monolithic representation, are still widely considered state of the art for the task of face verification in literature. Recently good performance has be attained in the task of face verification, using Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), via estimating a parts (i.e. image patch) face model; where the shape (i.e. spatial) information is largely ignored. In this paper we postulate that the characteristics current algorithms employ for verifying a face using monolithic and parts representations differ and are in many ways symbiotic; lending themselves to synergetic combination and improved verification performance. Results are presented on the BANCA database that demonstrate excellent verification performance in the presence of many common real world variabilities (e.g. camera degradation, minor pose variabilities, some changes in background and lighting).

Motivated by the success of parts based representations in face detection we have attempted to address some of the problems associated with applying such a philosophy to the task of face verification. Hitherto, a major problem with this approach in face verification is the intrinsic lack of training observations, stemming from individual subjects, in order to estimate the required conditional distributions. The estimated distributions have to be generalized enough to encompass the differing permutations of a subject's face yet still be able to discriminate between subjects. In our work the well known Gaussian mixture model (GMM) framework is employed to model the conditional density function of the parts based representation of the face. We demonstrate that excellent performance can be obtained from our GMM based representation through the employment of adaptation theory, specifically relevance adaptation (RA). Our results are presented for the frontal images of the BANCA database.

Radiation induced damage during the plasma processing of semiconductor materials adversely affects device reliability. Our group has shown in the past that Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) radiation (10nm-200nm) can beneficially deplete the charge deposited on the surface of the semiconductor by temporarily increasing the conductivity of the dielectric. The increase in conductivity has mainly been attributed to the generation of photoemission current and formation of electron hole pairs in the dielectric. In this paper, we discuss the steps involved in developing a model for VUV-semiconductor dielectric interactions based on the well-known Monte Carlo method. The statistical information obtained from this simulation will be compared to the experimental values obtained by exposing silicon nitride wafers to synchrotron radiation of energy 20eV. The simulation predicts the surface potential on the wafer due to photoemission. Experimentally measured surface potentials on the dielectric are used to check the validity of the simulation. Of the different process that can occur when a photon is incident on an atom, we concentrate mainly on photoemission of an electron. Consequently, the elastic and inelastic scattering events experienced by the electron during the course of its motion inside the dielectric are also considered. A modified form of the screened Rutherford formula, which approximates the Mott cross-section, as developed by Browning et. al., has been applied in this simulation. Initial simulation results will be presented.

The classic problem of estimating the parameters of an auto-regressive (AR) model is considered from a graphical model viewpoint. A number of practical parameter estimation algorithms - some of them well known, others apparently new - are derived as "summary propagation" in a factor graph. In particular, we demonstrate the joint estimation of AR coefficients, innovation variance, and noise variance.

A great challenge of hyperspectral target detection is to detect subtle targets without prior knowledge, particularly, when the targets of interest are insignificant and occur with low probabilities. This work provides a promising alternative to adaptive hyperspectral target detection. It considers a nested spatial window-based target detection (NSWTD) approach for hyperspectral imagery where a set of different spatial windows are nested and implemented to extract targets whose signatures are spectrally and spatially distinct. The use of nested spatial windows is determined by the image pixel resolution and applications. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed NSWTD approach, dual nested windows and three nested windows are implemented for computer simulations and real hyperspectral image experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed NSWTD approach performs effectively and improves a recent adaptive anomaly detector developed by Kwon et al. and the commonly used anomaly detector developed by Reed and Yu, referred to as RX algorithm. Its computation complexity is also very simple.

Texture is one of important features of masses in mammograms. A recent texture unit-based texture spectrum approach, referred to as texture unit coding (TUC) has shown promise in texture classification. This paper presents a new application of the TUC to mass classification in mammograms. The TUC generates a texture spectrum for a texture image that can be used to describe the characteristics of masses. It also develops an information divergence (ID)-based discrimination criterion to measure the discrepancy between two texture spectra, a concept yet to explore in texture analysis. The TUC along with ID are further applied to mass classification in mammograms where the minimammographic database provided by the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) is used for experiments.
