Optimal mechanisms are determined for the hierarchical decomposition of wire-frame surfaces. A family of box-splines with compact support, suitable for the approximation of wire-frames is defined, generated by arbitrary sampling matrices with integer eigenvalues. Criterion of optimality is the minimization of the variance of the error difference between the original surface and its representation at each resolution level. This is needed so as to ensure that the wire mesh produces at each resolution as close a replica of the original surface as possible.

The authors present a fully constrained least squares linear spectral mixture analysis-based compression technique for hyperspectral image analysis, particularly, target detection and classification. Unlike most compression techniques that directly deal with image gray levels, the proposed compression approach generates the abundance fractional images of potential targets present in an image scene and then encodes these fractional images so as to achieve data compression. Since the vital information used for image analysis is generally preserved and retained in the abundance fractional images, the loss of information may have very little impact on image analysis. In some occasions, it even improves analysis performance. AVIRIS data experiments demonstrate that it can effectively detect and classify targets while achieving very high compression ratios.

In this paper, an ICA-based approach is proposed for hyperspectral image analysis. It can be viewed as a random version of the commonly used linear spectral mixture analysis, in which the abundance fractions in a linear mixture model are considered to be unknown independent signal sources. It does not require the full rank of the separating matrix or orthogonality as most ICA methods do. More importantly, the learning algorithm is designed based on the independency of the material abundance vector rather than the independency of the separating matrix generally used to constrain the standard ICA. As a result, the learning algorithm is able to converge to non-orthogonal independent components. This is particularly useful in hyperspectral image analysis since many materials extracted from a hyperspectral image may have similar spectral signatures and may not be orthogonal. The AVIRIS experiments have demonstrated that the proposed ICA provides an effective unsupervised technique for hyperspectral image classification.

We present a new image sequence segmentation method which combines both spatial and temporal information in a multiresolution framework. A region growing technique in a multiresolution scheme outputs an over-segmented partition of the image scene. Pure temporal information is collected for each region using a feature extraction/feature tracking technique. Motion information is further processed in a pyramidal robust motion estimation scheme, in order to calculate more complex motion parameters for each region. Regions obtained from the first step are clustered according to their motion models. This ensures that rigid objects with luminance discontinuities can be segmented correctly. The method has been successfully tested in real imagery and typical examples are presented.

This paper proposes a factorization method that reconstructs camera motion and scene shape based on the matching of multiple images under the condition that the camera captures a perspective view. Starting from the affine projection camera model, the projection depth is iteratively estimated until the measurement matrix has rank 4. Then, the obtained measurement matrix is factorized to restore the three-dimensional information of the scene in the projection space. This approach eliminates noise sensitive processes, such as the calculation of the fundamental matrix, that are required in the factorization for the conventional perspective projection image, and a stable reconstruction is realized. Furthermore, the metric constraint in the conventional affine model is extended, and the metric constraint in the perspective projection condition is derived. It is shown that the reconstruction in Euclidean space is realized if the internal parameters of the camera are given.

A new class of applications is described which requires cooperation among diverse users in multiple data and problem instance domains. The hierarchy of parallelism includes heterogeneity within a single instance of the problem, homogeneity among subsets of users within a problem domain, and multiple problem domains which share computational resources - software and hardware. The core of the architecture is a socket-server which registers clients and servers (both statically and dynamically), and assures isolation of users in separate problem domains. The users all see the system as a set of functions accessible via the WWW. The particular problem of genetic linkage analysis is used as a case study to illustrate and implement the architecture. GenoMap, the first implementation of this system is being deployed for several groups of cooperating users at multiple institutions in a study to isolate the genomic locus of the controlling gene(s) in several diseases including autism. More than 400 genetic markers are being analyzed from more than 300 individuals in this study. The users span geneticists, clinical physicians, statisticians, disease specialists, laboratory technicians, and computer scientists/engineers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

An algorithm to generate background sprite images from multiview image sequences is presented. A dynamic programming algorithm, using a multiview matching cost as well as pure geometrical constraints, is used to provide an estimate of the disparity field and to identify occluded areas. By combining motion, disparity and occlusion information, a sprite image corresponding to the first (main) view at the first time instant is generated. Image pixels from other views that are occluded in the main view are added to the sprite. The sprite coding method defined by MPEG-4 is extended for multiview image sequences, based on the generated sprite. Experimental results are presented, demonstrating the performance of the proposed technique and comparing it with methods using sprite generation from monoscopic sequences. © 1999 IEEE.

This paper describes a 3D model-based unsupervised procedure for the segmentation of multiview image sequences using multiple sources of information. Using multiview information a 3D model representation of the scene is constructed. The articulation procedure is based on the homogeneity of parameters, such as rigid 3D motion, color and depth, estimated for each sub-object, which consists of a number of interconnected triangles of the 3D model. The rigid 3D motion of each sub-object for subsequent frames is estimated using a Kalman filtering algorithm taking into account the temporal correlation between consecutive frames. Information from all cameras is combined during the formation of the equations for the rigid 3D motion parameters. The parameter estimation for each sub-object and the 3D model segmentation procedures are interleaved and repeated iteratively until a satisfactory object segmentation emerges. The performance of the resulting segmentation method is evaluated experimentally. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

This paper develops a methodology consisting of improved previously known methods and novel techniques for the model based coding of a human face. An image scene is analysed to locate the position of human faces and transform a generic three dimensional face model to reflect the characteristics extracted from the particular image. A set of feature points necessary to define the position and posture of the face is tracked through the image sequence and the three dimensional model is continuously adapted to the facial image of every subsequent frame. Results are shown for every individual module, while on going work aims to the integration of the component modules. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

The optimization of microelectronic devices and Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology depends on the knowledge of the mechanical and thermophysical properties of the thin film materials used to fabricate them. The thickness, stoichiometry, structure and thermal history can affect the properties of thin films causing their mechanical and thermophysical properties to diverge from bulk values. Moreover, it is known that the mechanical and thermophysical properties of thin films vary considerably at different temperatures. Bulk properties of semiconductors have been characterized over a wide range of temperatures;however there is limited information on thin film properties of silicon-based compounds such as silicon nitride, specially at high temperatures. In our work, MEMS devices designed to record the localized maximum temperature during high temperature thermal processes, which we call Breaking T-MEMS, will be presented as a way to determine some of the mechanical properties (Young's modulus and fracture strength) and thermophysical properties (coefficient of thermal expansion) of silicon-rich nitride thin films at high temperatures. The Breaking T-MEMS device consists of a thin film bridge suspended over a substrate. During testing, the devices are thermally loaded in tension by heating the sample. The low coefficient of thermal expansion of the film relative to that of the substrate causes the thin film bridge to break at a specific temperature. Through a combination of indirect experimental measurements, analytical expressions, numerical and statistical analysis, and if the experiments are conducted using at least two different substrates of known temperature-dependent coefficients of thermal expansion, some of the material properties of the film can be calculated from the breaking temperatures of various devices. The two candidate materials for the substrate are silicon and aluminum oxide (sapphire).
