This paper describes a procedure for stereo video production using model-based processing of both left and right channels of a stereoscopic image sequence. The proposed scheme uses an original video and the first / basic frame of a video to be produced according to the original one. A 3D model is created first for both the original and the basic images using consistent depth information. Robust classification techniques are then used to obtain an articulated description of the foreground of the scene (head, neck, shoulders). The object articulation procedure is based on a novel scheme for the segmentation of the rigid 3D motion fields of the triangle patches of the 3D model object. This procedure is applied for both the original and basic images resulting to corresponding sub-objects of the two images. The rigid 3D motion is then re-computed for each sub-object of the original image sequence and finally, the motion parameters produced for each sub-object of the original video are applied to the corresponding sub-objects of the first image of the video to be produced. The model of the produced image is moved according to the original one and the result is a new video with the same motion but different shape, size and texture than the original one. Increasingly, feedback of measured run-time information is being used in the optimization of computation execution. This paper introduces a model relating the static view of a computation to its run-time variance that is useful in this context. A notion of uncertainty is then used to provide bounds on key scheduling parameters of the run-time computation. To illustrate the relationship between fidelity in measured information and minimum schedulable, grain size, we apply the bounds to three existing parallel architectures for the case of run-time variance caused by monitoring intrusion. We also outline a hybrid static-dynamic scheduling paradigm-SEDIA-that uses the model of uncertainty to optimize computation for execution in the presence of run-time variance from sources other than monitoring intrusion.

A large collection of texts may be reached through the Internet and this provides a powerful platform from which common-sense knowledge may be gathered. This paper presents a system that contains a core knowledge base structured around WordNet, a lexical database, capable of extracting contextual information from a given input text. Such context information is then used to retrieve other texts from the Internet that relate to that context. When processed by the system, these new texts bring more information that represents an enhanced domain context for the initial text. This is an incremental method for text processing that acquires domain knowledge from other texts. The paper describes the system architecture, its core knowledge base and inference engine, and the acquisition of new knowledge from corpora. © 1997, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

In a dedicated mixed-machine heterogeneous computing (HC) system, an application program may be decomposed into subtasks, then each subtask assigned to the machine where it is best suited for execution. Subtask data relocation is defined as selecting the sources for their needed data items. This study focuses on theoretical issues for data relocation using a stochastic HC model. It is assumed that multiple independent subtasks of an application program can be executed concurrently on different machines whenever possible. A stochastic model for HC is proposed, in which the computation times of subtasks and communication times for inter-machine data transfers can be random variables. The optimization problem for finding the optimal matching, scheduling, and data relocation schemes to minimize the total execution time of an application program is defined based on this stochastic HC model. The optimization criteria and search space for the above optimization problem are described. It is proven that a greedy algorithm based approach will generate the optimal data relocation scheme with respect to any fixed matching and scheduling schemes. This result indicates that a greedy algorithm based approach is the best strategy for developing data relocation heuristics in practice.

This paper presents a new training approach for improving recognition of speech under emotional and environmental stress. The proposed approach consists of training a speech recognizer with synthetically generated speech under each stress condition using stress perturbation models previously formulated in [4, 1]. The perturbation models were previously formulated to statistically model the parameter variations under angry, loud, and Lombard effect and were employed in an analysis-synthesis scheme for generating stressed synthetic speech from isolated neutral speech. In this paper, two training approaches employing the synthetically generated stressed speech are presented consisting of: speaker-independent, and speaker-adaptive training methods. Both approaches outperform neutral trained recognizers when tested with angry, loud, and Lombard effect speech. © 1997 5th European Conference on Speech Communication and Technology, EUROSPEECH 1997. Motion tracking using an active camera is a very computationally complex problem. Existing serial algorithms have provided frame rates that are much lower than those desired, mainly because of the lack of computational resources. parallel computers are well suited to image processing tasks and can provide the computational power that is required for real-time motion tracking algorithms. This paper develops a parallel implementation of a known serial motion tracking algorithm, with the goal of achieving greater than real-time frame rates, and to study the effects of data layout, choice of parallel mode of execution, and machine size on the execution time of this algorithm. A distinguishing feature of this application study is that the portion of each image frame that is relevant changes from one frame to the next based on the camera motion. This impacts the effect of the chosen data layout on the needed inter-processor data transfers and the way in which work is distributed among the processors. Experiments were performed to determine for which image sizes and number of processors which data layout would perform better. The parallel computers used in this study are the MasPar MP-1, Intel Paragon, and PASM. Different modes are examined and it is determined that mixed mode is faster than SIMD or MIMD implementations.

Within the framework of the NIKA project1 for the development of a "Generalized System for processing and Management of Medical Images", we have integrated a Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) station and a γ-camera diagnostic modality to the newly developed generalized hospital-wide information system. The integration consists of acquiring, digitizing, converting and filing the information from the above diagnostic modalities to the hospital's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The PACS, which is installed in the Onasio Cardiosurgery Centre of Athens, Greece, is responsible for archival, cataloging, retrieval and viewing of the large volume of patient examination data accumulated during his/her stay in the Centre. The ultimate goal is for all patient data, from all different examinations, to be viewed on dedicated client workstations. Information from different modalities can then be simultaneously presented to the attending physician, for a complete picture of the patient history and condition. © 1997, The authors.

Heterogeneous computing covers a great variety of situations. This study focuses on a particular application domain (iterative automatic target recognition tasks) and an associated specific class of dedicated heterogeneous hardware platforms. The contribution of this paper is that, for the computational environment considered, it presents a methodology for real-time on-line input-data dependent remappings of the application subtasks to the processors in the heterogeneous hardware platform using previously stored off-line statically determined mappings. That is, the operating system will be able to decide during the execution of the application whether or not to perform a remapping based on information generated by the application from its input data. If the decision is to remap, the operating system will be able to select a previously derived and stored mapping that is appropriate for the given state of the application (e.g., the number of objects it is currently tracking).

The maturing of telecommunication technologies has ushered a whole new era of applications and services in the health care environment. Teleworking, teleconsultation, multimedia conferencing and medical data distribution are rapidly becoming commonplace in clinical practice. As a result, a set of problems arises, concerning data confidentiality and integrity. Public computer networks, such as the emerging ISDN technology, are vulnerable to eavesdropping. Therefore it is important for telemedicine applications to employ end-to-end encryption mechanisms securing the data channel from unauthorised access or modification. We propose a network access and encryption system that is both economical and easily implemented for integration in developing or existing applications, using well-known and thoroughly tested encryption algorithms. Public-key cryptography is used for session-key exchange, while symmetric algorithms are used for bulk encryption. Mechanisms for session-key generation and exchange are also provided.

An image warping technique based on segmented regions is introduced for the temporal prediction of videophone-type sequences. At the encoder, a set of control points are determined from the previous frame and their corresponding best matched points are determined from the current frame. The selection process of these points is achieved by segmenting the previous frame into different regions using a color segmentation technique based on a recursive histogramming approach and the control points are subsequently chosen along the region boundaries. The spatial offset of these points between the previous and current frame are represented as motion vectors. The facial area is intraframe encoded to avoid distortions of the facial features which convey critical information. At the decoder, the same segmentation and control point selection algorithm is used along with the motion vectors in order to find the region boundaries of the predicted frame. The facial area is decoded and an affine transformation is finally used to determine the remaining regions and form the predicted frame. This technique produces results that are free from blocking artifacts as in the conventional block matching method, with only a moderate increase in computational complexity. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.
