Holographic multiple-input and multiple-output (HMIMO) is a promising technology with the potential to achieve high energy and spectral efficiencies, enhance system capacity and diversity, etc. In this work, we address the challenge of HMIMO near field (NF) channel estimation, which is complicated by the intricate model introduced by the dyadic Green's function. Despite its complexity, the channel model is governed by a limited set of parameters. This makes parametric channel estimation highly attractive, offering substantial performance enhancements and enabling the extraction of valuable sensing parameters, such as user locations, which are particularly beneficial in mobile networks. However, the relationship between these parameters and channel gains is nonlinear and compounded by integration, making the estimation a formidable task. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel neural network (NN) assisted hybrid method. With the assistance of NNs, we first develop a novel hybrid channel model with a significantly simplified expression compared to the original one, thereby enabling parametric channel estimation. Using the readily available training data derived from the original channel model, the NNs in the hybrid channel model can be effectively trained offline. Then, building upon this hybrid channel model, we formulate the parametric channel estimation problem with a probabilistic framework and design a factor graph representation for Bayesian estimation. Leveraging the factor graph representation and unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop an effective message passing-based Bayesian channel estimation algorithm. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.

Palmprint recognition has emerged as a prominent biometric technology, widely applied in diverse scenarios. Traditional handcrafted methods for palmprint recognition often fall short in representation capability, as they heavily depend on researchers' prior knowledge. Deep learning (DL) has been introduced to address this limitation, leveraging its remarkable successes across various domains. While existing surveys focus narrowly on specific tasks within palmprint recognition-often grounded in traditional methodologies-there remains a significant gap in comprehensive research exploring DL-based approaches across all facets of palmprint recognition. This paper bridges that gap by thoroughly reviewing recent advancements in DL-powered palmprint recognition. The paper systematically examines progress across key tasks, including region-of-interest segmentation, feature extraction, and security/privacy-oriented challenges. Beyond highlighting these advancements, the paper identifies current challenges and uncovers promising opportunities for future research. By consolidating state-of-the-art progress, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, enabling them to stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies and drive innovation in palmprint recognition. Joint motion/disparity MAP estimation for stereo image sequences

An algorithm is described for the joint estimation of motion and disparity vector fields from stereoscopic image sequences. Markov random fields (MRF) are used to model local interaction processes. Interaction of neighbouring-motion disparity vectors across a discontinuity line is prohibited via hidden Markov fields signalling discontinuities in the vector fields. Occlusion processes are also used to mark occluded image locations, which may yield ambiguous matches. The coherence of motion and disparity vector fields is exploited by means of the epipolar constraint and the so called 'loop constraint'. A computationally efficient, suboptimal, hierarchical, deterministic relaxation algorithm is proposed.

Object-based coding of stereo image sequences using three-dimensional models

An object-based stereo image coding algorithm is proposed. The algorithm relies on modeling of the object structure using 3-D wire-frame models and motion estimation using globally rigid and locally deformable motion models. Algorithms for the estimation of motion and structure parameters from stereo images are described. Motion parameters are used to construct predicted images by mapping the image texture on the object surface. Coding of object parameters, appearing background regions, and prediction errors are investigated, and experimental results with standard stereo image sequences depicting general scenes are presented. The proposed algorithm is seen to be very efficient for applications such as stereoscopic video transmission. Furthermore, it is especially well suited to advanced applications such as generation and transmission of intermediate views for multiview receiver systems and applications in which object-wise editing of the bit stream is required. The latter include video production using preanalyzed scenes and virtual reality applications.

processing high-dimensional data cubes and developing high-performance classifiers are core objectives in the field of hyperspectral image classification (HSIC). Superpixel-based methods are widely used in HSIC due to their efficacy in reducing redundant information and enhancing local features. However, imprecise segmentation, especially in complex structures and textures of hyperspectral images (HSIs), may lead to inconsistencies in the regions extracted by superpixels and the boundaries between different ground objects. Such inconsistencies significantly degrade the classification performance of HSIs. Alternatively, when parameter settings are inaccurate, edge-aware feature extraction methods often introduce sharpening artifacts at the image boundaries, resulting in a decrease in classification accuracy. To effectively address these challenges, we propose a novel probabilistic fusion method for HSIC. This method consists of the following stages. First, spatial information is extracted by a multiscale superpixel segmentation method and then probabilistically optimized by the extended random walk (ERW) method. Next, semantic-aware structural features (S2Fs) are extracted along with edge information of different objects. Lastly, a probabilistic framework is proposed to fuse the class probabilities of superpixel-based spatial information and semantic-aware structural features. Experimental results on three real datasets show state-of-the-art classification performance, even with limited training sets. ©1991-2012 IEEE.

Coverage analysis in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) remains insufficient, especially under user mobility and diverse association strategies. To address this, this paper proposes a contact probability and coverage approximation based on association strategy (CPCA-AS) to analyze the coverage probability (CPr) in visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) HetNets. Based on the proposed stochastic geometry framework, CPCA-AS evaluates coverage performance under various configurations, including RF-only, VLC-only, and hybrid RF/VLC scenarios. The model incorporates a contact probability mechanism and considers two strategies: opportunistic VLC and maximum received signal power (MRSP). For VLC networks, CPCA-AS utilizes the Gil-Pelaez inversion theorem, and Laplace transforms to efficiently approximate CPr. For RF networks, Markov and Gamma inequalities form conservative accurate approximations and lower bounds. CPCA-AS effectively captures the influence of the photodetector’s field-of-view (FoV) on interference and association behavior. Monte Carlo simulations validate the accuracy of the CPCA-AS. Results demonstrate that CPCA-AS improves CPr. The opportunistic VLC strategy performs better in high-interference and large FoV scenarios. In contrast, the MRSP strategy is more effective in low-interference and low-rate environments.

Optimization of quadtree segmentation and hybrid two-dimensional and three-dimensional motion estimation in a rate-distortion framework

A rate-distortion framework is used to define a very low bit-rate coding scheme based on quadtree segmentation and optimized selection of motion estimators, This technique achieves maximum reconstructed image quality under the constraint of a target bit rate for the coding of the vector field and segmentation information, First, a complete scheme is proposed for hybrid two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) motion estimation and compensation, The quadtree object segmentation is optimized for hybrid motion estimation in the rate-distortion sense, This scheme adapts to the depth of the quadtree and the technique used for motion estimation for each leaf of the tree. A more sophisticated technique, adapted to the requirements of a very low bit-rate coder, is also proposed which also considers the transmission of the prediction error corresponding to the particular choice of the motion estimator, Based on these coding schemes, two versions of a very low bit-rate image sequence coder are developed, Experimental results illustrating the performance of the proposed techniques in very low bit-rate image sequence coding application areas are presented and evaluated.

A new deflected stochastic-gradient algorithm for adaptive sensor arrays is introduced. It is shown to have the capability of converging substantially faster than the nondeflected stochastic gradient (LMS) algorithm but slower than the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm. Because of its amenability to reduction of computational complexity by data quantization, it has the potential for processing digital signals with bandwidths one to two orders of magnitude larger than the bandwidths manageable with the RLS algorithm for sensor arrays containing a number of adjustable weights in the approximate range of 10-50.
