On YASS’s Non-monotonic Security Performance

Recently, researchers have discovered unexpected bumps in the detection rate curve of yet another steganographic scheme (YASS). We refer to this abnormal phenomenon as non-monotonic security performance. This paper first analyzes this abnormality and points out that it is caused by the non-uniformity in probability of coincidence of (Formula presented.) embedding blocks and (Formula presented.) JPEG blocks. Based on this observation, we propose that further randomizing data embedding positions can overcome the non-monotonic security performance. Experimental results have demonstrated a complete removal of bumps in the detection rate curve of YASS after further randomization. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

In this paper, we study electrical characteristics of gate-all-around (GAA) silicon-germanium (SiGe) nanowire field effect transistors (NWFETS) with different aspect ratio (AR) of channel. Device characteristics: the subthreshold swing (SS), the drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL), and the I ON /I OFF ratio are simulated by using three-dimensional quantum mechanically corrected device simulation. electrical characteristics of 10-nm-gate GAA Si 1-x Ge x NWFET devices are explored with respect to different thickness of SiGe and Ge's mole fraction. It is investigated that an ellipse-shaped channel with a small aspect ratio possesses better DC characteristics, compared with the one which has large AR due to its good gate controllability.

This paper considers using reset control to improve transient performance and overcome some fundamental limitations of linear systems. First, an auxiliary system is presented, then, based on which, a new reset control model is proposed, such that the non-overshoot performance specification can be met for any minimum phase relative degree one plants, the results imply some limitations of linear systems are overcome and clearly illustrate the advantages of reset control. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness.

This paper addresses the problem of infinite time performance of model predictive controllers applied to constrained nonlinear systems. The total performance is compared with a finite horizon optimal cost to reveal performance limits of closed-loop model predictive control systems. Based on the Principle of Optimality, an upper and a lower bound of the ratio between the total performance and the finite horizon optimal cost are obtained explicitly expressed by the optimization horizon. The results also illustrate, from viewpoint of performance, how model predictive controllers approaches to infinite optimal controllers as the optimization horizon increases. © IFAC.

With the widespread use of mobile devices, the location-based service (LBS) applications become increasingly popular, which introduces the new security challenge to protect user's location privacy. On one hand, a user expects to report his own location as far as possible away from his real location to protect his location privacy. On the other hand, in order to obtain high quality of service (QoS), users are required to report their locations as accurate as possible. To achieve the dedicated tradeoff between privacy requirement and QoS requirement, we propose a novel approach based on cloaking technique. We also discuss the disadvantage of the traditional general system model and propose an improved model. The basic idea of our approach is to select a sub-area from the generated cloaking area as user's reported location. The sub-area may not contain a user's real location, which prevents an adversary from performing attack with side information. Specifically, by defining an objective function with a novel location privacy metric and a QoS metric, we are able to convert the privacy issue to an optimization problem. Then, location privacy metric and QoS metric are given. To reduce the complexity of the optimization, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. Through privacy-preserving analysis and comparison with related work [8], we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. © 2014 TCCT, CAA.

There is a significant need for more comprehensive electromagnetic articulography (EMA) datasets that can provide matched acoustics and articulatory kinematic data with good spatial and temporal resolution. The Marquette University Electromagnetic Articulography Mandarin Accented English (EMA-MAE) corpus provides kinematic and acoustic data from 40 gender and dialect balanced speakers representing 20 Midwestern standard American English L1 speakers and 20 Mandarin Accented English (MAE) L2 speakers, half Beijing region dialect and half are Shanghai region dialect. Three dimensional EMA data were collected at a 400 Hz sampling rate using the NDI Wave system, with articulatory sensors on the midsagittal lips, lower incisors, tongue blade and dorsum, plus lateral lip corner and tongue body. Sensors provide three-dimensional position data as well as two-dimensional orientation data representing the orientation of the sensor plane. Data have been corrected for head movement relative to a fixed reference sensor and also adjusted using a biteplate calibration system to place the data in an articulatory working space relative to each subject's individual midsagittal and maxillary occlusal planes. Speech materials include isolated words chosen to focus on specific contrasts between the English and Mandarin languages, as well as sentences and paragraphs for continuous speech, totaling approximately 45 minutes of data per subject. A beta version of the EMA-MAE corpus is now available, and the full corpus is in preparation for public release to help advance research in areas such as pronunciation modeling, acoustic-articulatory inversion, L1-L2 comparisons, pronunciation error detection, and accent modification training.

Recently several speaker adaptation methods have been proposed for deep neural network (DNN) in many large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) tasks. However, only a few methods rely on tuning the weight matrices in trained DNNs to optimize system performance since it is very prone to over-fitting especially when some class labels are missing in the adaptation data. In this paper, we propose a new speaker adaptation method for the hybrid NN/HMM speech recognition model based on singular value decomposition (SVD). We apply SVD on the weight matrices in trained DNNs, and then tune diagonal matrices with the adaptation data. This solves the over-fitting problem since we can change the weight matrices slightly by only modifying the singular values. We evaluate the proposed adaptation method in two standard speech recognition tasks, namely TIMIT phone recognition and large vocabulary speech recognition in the Switchboard task. Experimental results have shown that it is effective to adapt large DNN models using only a small amount of adaptation data. For example, the Switchboard results have shown that the proposed SVD-based adaptation method may achieve up to 3-6% relative error reduction using only a few dozens of adaptation utterances per speaker.

For low-rank recovery and error correction, Low-Rank Representation (LRR) row-reconstructs given data matrix X by seeking a low-rank representation, while Inductive Robust Principal Component Analysis (IRPCA) aims to calculate a low-rank projection to column-reconstruct X. But either column or row information of Xis lost by LRR and IRPCA. In addition, the matrix X itself is chosen as the dictionary by LRR, but (grossly) corrupted entries may greatly depress its performance. To solve these issues, we propose a simultaneous low-rank representation and dictionary learning framework termed Tensor LRR (TLRR) for robust bilinear recovery. TLRR reconstructs given matrix X along both row and column directions by computing a pair of low-rank matrices alternately from a nuclear norm minimization problem for constructing a low-rank tensor subspace. As a result, TLRR in the optimizations can be regarded as enhanced IRPCA with noises removed by low-rank representation, and can also be considered as enhanced LRR with a clean informative dictionary using a low-rank projection. The comparison with other criteria shows that TLRR exhibits certain advantages, for instance strong generalization power and robustness enhancement to the missing values. Simulations verified the validity of TLRR for recovery.

Cache-coherent shared memory is critical for programmability in many-core systems. Several directory-based schemes have been proposed, but dynamic, non-uniform sharing make efficient directory storage challenging, with each giving up storage space, performance or energy. We introduce SpongeDirectory, a sparse directory structure that exploits multi-level memristory technology. SpongeDirectory expands directory storage in-place when needed by increasing the number of bits stored on a single memristor device, trading latency and energy for storage. We explore several SpongeDirectory configurations, finding that a provisioning rate of 0.5× with memristors optimized for low energy consumption is the most competitive. This optimal SpongeDirectory configuration has performance comparable to a conventional sparse directory, requires 18× less storage space, and consumes 8× less energy.

Evolutionary membrane computing is an important research direction of membrane computing that aims to explore the complex interactions between membrane computing and evolutionary computation. These disciplines are receiving increasing attention. In this paper, an overview of the evolutionary membrane computing state-of-the-art and new results on two established topics in well defined scopes (membrane-inspired evolutionary algorithms and automated design of membrane computing models) are presented. We survey their theoretical developments and applications, sketch the differences between them, and compare the advantages and limitations. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
