The main point of this paper is to present a time domain strategy for drug dosage to treat psychiatric disorders. A time domain model of emotion is obtained from an extension of a recently developed fractional nonlinear dynamic model of happiness. First, the Fractional Optimal Control law for incommensurate multi state systems is obtained. It will be then applied as an optimal drug administration procedure in the line of psychiatric disorders treatment. Results of this paper show that optimal control scheme is a proper approach to face the difficulties of analysis and control the incommensurate systems. It can be also clearly seen from the simulation results that this approach is very effective in the case that control methods are used as treatment techniques.

We derive an optimization framework for joint view and rate scalable coding of multi-view video content represented in the texture plus depth format. The optimization enables the sender to select the subset of coded views and their encoding rates such that the aggregate distortion over a continuum of synthesized views is minimized. We construct the view-rate scalable bitstream such that it delivers optimal performance simultaneously over a discrete set of transmission rates. In conjunction, we develop a user interaction model that characterizes the view selection actions of the client as a Markov chain over a discrete state-space. Our scheme outperforms the state-of-the-art H.264 SVC codec as well as a multi-view wavelet-based coder equipped with a uniform rate allocation strategy, across all scenarios studied. Finally, we observed that the interactivity-aware coding delivers superior performance over conventional allocation techniques that do not anticipate the client's view selection actions in their operation.

Human interest input could greatly enhance the efficiency of the multi-robot exploration. However, most of the previous work did not take the intention of the operator into account. In this paper, a human interest oriented multi-robot exploration system is designed. The system is composed of a mobile base station and several robot explorers. A human interest oriented task allocation method is developed to enable these robot explorers to coordinate based on the operator's intention. Furthermore, an optimization index is proposed to balance the obedience, connectivity and explorability of the system; and the optimization problem is solved to generate the movements of the mobile base station and the robot explorers. Simulations and real-world experiments have demonstrate the effectiveness of the system and the efficiency of the exploration process.

Three dimensional image volumes collected using optical microscopy exhibit many characteristics that cause difficulty in segmentation. These include decreasing image contrast with increasing tissue depth, poor edge detail with regard to cellular structures, and limited spatial resolution. This paper describes a three dimensional segmentation method utilizing active surfaces to segment microscopy image volumes. We demonstrate this method on a three dimensional sequence of images acquired from stationary/stabilized kidney tissue of a rat. Results from this method are compared against a prior pseudo-three dimensional segmentation method that analyzes slices on a single image-by-image basis, as well as against another native three dimensional segmentation method.

In this paper, we present a gain-scheduling distributed model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for polytopic uncertain systems subject to actuator saturation. A large-scale system is decomposed into subsystems and sub-controllers are designed independently. An invariant set condition is provided and a min-max distributed MPC strategy is proposed based on the invariant set. The distributed MPC controller is determined by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization problem. An iterative algorithm is provided to coordinate the sub-controllers. A numerical example is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper studies the global leader-following consensus problem for a multi-agent system using bounded controls. Both the agents and the leader are described by a chain of integrators of arbitrary length. A saturated linear feedback control law is constructed for each system in the group. These feedback laws use a multi-hop relay protocol, in which each agent obtains the information of other agents through multi-hop paths in the communication network, and the feedback gains are constructed from the adjacency matrix of the communication network. It is shown that global leader-following consensus is achieved under the feedback control laws we have constructed when the communication topology among follower agents is a strongly connected and detailed balanced directed graph and the leader is a neighbor of at least one follower. Simulation results are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Directional or Circular statistics are pertaining to the analysis and interpretation of directions or rotations. In this work, a novel probability distribution is proposed to model multidimensional sparse directional data. The Generalized Directional Laplacian Distribution (DLD) is a hybrid between the Laplacian distribution and the von Mises-Fisher distribution. The distribution's parameters are estimated using Maximum-Likelihood Estimation over a set of training data points. Mixtures of Directional Laplacian Distributions (MDLD) are also introduced in order to model multiple concentrations of sparse directional data. Body sensor networks (BSNs) have provided the opportunity to monitor energy expenditure (EE) in daily life and with that information help reduce sedentary behavior and ultimately improve human health. Current approaches for EE estimation using BSNs require tedious annotation of activity types and multiple body sensor nodes during data collection and high accuracy activity classifiers during post processing. These drawbacks impede deploying this technology in daily life — the primary motivation of using BSNs to monitor EE. With the goal of achieving the highest EE estimation accuracy with the least invasiveness and data collection effort, this paper presents an unsupervised, single-node solution for data collection and activity clustering. Motivated by a previous finding that clusters of similar activities tend to have similar regression models for estimating EE, we apply unsupervised clustering to implicitly group activities with homogeneous features and generate specific regression models for each activity cluster without requiring manual annotation. The framework therefore does not require specific activity classification, hence eliminating activity type labels. With leave-one-subject-out cross-validation across 10 subjects, an RMSE of 0.96 kcal/min was achieved, which is comparable to the activity-specific model and improves upon a single regression model.

In this paper, we present a compressive sensing-based image denoising algorithm using spatially adaptive image representation and estimation of optimal error tolerance based on sparse signal analysis. The proposed method performs block-based multiple compressive sampling after decomposing the sparse signal into feature and non-feature regions using simple statistical analysis. For minimization of recovery error and number of iterations, the modified OMP method estimates the optimal error tolerance using the average variance in the recovery step. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed denoising algorithm better removes noise without undesired artifacts than existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of both objective (PSNR/SSIM) and subjective measures. processing time of the proposed method is 5 to 10 times faster than the standard OMP-based method.

A five-dimensional (5D) controlled two-stage Colpitts oscillator is introduced and analyzed. This new electronic oscillator is constructed by considering the well-known two-stage Colpitts oscillator with two further elements (coupled inductors and variable resistor). In contrast to current approaches based on piecewise linear (PWL) model, we propose a smooth mathematical model (with exponential nonlinearity) to investigate the dynamics of the oscillator. Several issues, such as the basic dynamical behaviour, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency spectra of the oscillator, are investigated theoretically and numerically by varying a single control resistor. It is found that the oscillator moves from the state of fixed point motion to chaos via the usual paths of period-doubling and interior crisis routes as the single control resistor is monitored. Furthermore, an experimental study of controlled Colpitts oscillator is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit is proposed for the investigations of the complex dynamics behaviour of the system. A very good qualitative agreement is obtained between the theoretical/numerical and experimental results.
