Silicon-Germanium saturable absorber mirrors are developed for laser mode locking. The fabrication process is fashioned such that a highly reflecting Si/SiO2 Bragg mirror with a crystalline absorber top-layer is generated. One step of wafer-bonding allows for subsequent epitaxial growth on the mirror. A six-pair reflector centered at 1400 nm with 99.8% peak reflectivity, a 99%-reflectivity bandwidth of 700 nm and a surface roughness of 0.136 nm is demonstrated. A thin Germanium layer is epitaxially deposited on the mirror surface to provide saturable absorption at 1550nm. with a sub-picosecond recovery time. The device is used to achieve stable, continuously modelocked operation of an Er-Yb:glass laser centered at 1540 nm, generating 220 fs pulses. Copyright The Electrochemical Society.

The MISP processor is a programmable media processor which supports multi-issuing, multi-threading and stream processing techniques. MISP executes applications that have been mapped to the stream programming model. The stream model decomposes applications into a set of computation kernels that operate on data streams. This mapping exposes the inherent locality and parallelisms in media applications. MISP exploits thread level (TLP), data level (DLP), sub-word (SP) and instruction level (ILP) parallelisms inherent in media applications. Full simulator of MISP has been implemented and several media workloads composed of EEMBC benchmarks have been applied. Also we applied test programs on imagine stream processor. The simulation results show MISP gains IPC of more than 2.08 times and performance of more than 1.86 times over imagine. The synthesis results show area overhead per thread addition in MISP is about 7% without changing clock frequency

A computationally efficient algorithm for multiple source localization, using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, for the wideband sources in the near field of a sensor array/area, is presented. The basic idea is to decompose the observed sensor data, which is a superimposition of multiple sources, into individual components in the frequency domain and then estimate the corresponding location parameters associated with each component separately. Instead of the conventional alternating projection method, we propose to adopt the EM algorithm in this paper; our method involves two steps, namely Expectation (E-step) and Maximization (M-step). In the E-step, the individual incident source waveforms are estimated. Then, in the M-step, the maximum likelihood estimates of the source location parameters are obtained. These two steps are executed iteratively and alternatively until the pre-defined convergence is reached. The computational complexity comparison between our proposed EM algorithm and the existing alternating projection scheme is investigated. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that the computational complexity of the proposed EM algorithm is significantly lower than that of the conventional alternating projection algorithm.

An efficient algorithm using maximum a posteriori-Markov random field (MAP-MRF) based approach for recovering a high-resolution image from multiple sub-pixel shifted low-resolution images is proposed. The algorithm can be used for super-resolution of both space-invariant and space-variant blurred images. We prove an important theorem that the posterior is also Markov and derive the exact posterior neighborhood structure in the presence of warping, blurring and down-sampling operations. The posterior being Markov enables us to perform all matrix operations as local image domain operations thereby resulting in a considerable speedup. Nowadays, the huge non-indexing quantities of image archives (especially document images) require the development of intelligent tools for their retrieval with convenience comparable of the texts search engines. The proposed technique addresses the document retrieval problem by a word matching procedure. It performs matching directly in the images bypassing OCR and using word-images as queries. It is constituted of two different parts: The offline and the online operation. In the offline operation, the archive of document images is examined and the results are stored in a database. The online operation consists of the Web interface, the creation of the word's image and finally, the matching stage. The proposed matching process it can be described shortly as a two-threshold rating system. Finally, the proposed system has been build and it can be found in at the Web address: http://***/irs2.
