This paper presents new fast algorithms to improve the widely used endmember extraction algorithm, called pixel purity index (PPI) and also modify a revised version of PPI, called block of skewers (BOS) method. Since both the PPI and the BOS method suffer from same drawbacks in implementation, our proposed algorithms are designed to mitigate these dilemmas by introducing a newly developed concept, called virtual dimensionality (VD) and a process that can automatically determine a set of endmembers without appealing for parameters used in the PPI and BOS method. As a result, two modified PPI and BOSPPI algorithms are developed. Unlike the PPI and BOS method, the two new algorithms are iterative and provide stopping rules to automatically extract endmembers without manually selecting endmembers. The experimental study shows that the MPPI performs better than the PPI not only in computational complexity, but also in stability and performance, and the MBOSPPI could perform better than the BOS method if the blocks of skewers are properly designed. © 2005 by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

In this paper, an FIR cascade structure for adaptive linear prediction is studied in which each stage FIR filter is independently adapted using LMS algorithm. The theoretical analysis shows that the cascade performs a linear prediction in a way of successive refinement and each stage tries to obliterate the dominant mode of its input. Experimental results show that the performance of the cascade LMS predictor are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis. ©2005 IEEE.

Motivated by the success of free-parts based representations in face recognition [1] we have attempted to address some of the problems associated with applying such a philosophy to the task of speaker-independent automatic speech reading. Hitherto, a major problem with canonical area-based approaches in automatic speech reading is the intrinsic lack of training observations due to the visual speech modality’s low sample rate and large variability in appearance. We believe a free-parts representation can overcome many of these limitations due to its natural ability to generalize by producing many observations from a single mouth image, whilst still preserving the ability to discriminate between various visual-speech units. This approach additionally requires a modification to traditional techniques employed for the estimation of hidden Markov Models (HMMs), whose resultant models we currently refer to as free-parts HMMs (FP-HMMs). Results will be presented on the CUAVE audiovisual speech database. © AVSP 2005. All rights reserved.

Motivated by the success of free-parts based representations in face recognition, we have attempted to address some of the problems associated with applying such a philosophy to the task of speaker-independent visual speech recognition. A major problem with canonical area-based approaches in automatic visual speech recognition is the dependence these approaches have on locating and tracking the speaker's region of interest (ROI) correctly. By employing a free-parts representation, we assume that the position/structure of patches within the mouth image can be relaxed so they can "freely" move to varying extents, hence reducing the influence of the front-end effect. In this paper, we show that by using a free-parts representation we gain some robustness against the problem of ROI localisation and tracking compared to current area-based feature extraction techniques such as the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Also in this paper, we expose the importance of representation for the task of visual speech recognition highlighted by the poor results current representations yield. © 2005 IEEE.

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated. © 2005 IEEE.

Performance of face verification systems can be adversely affected by a number of different mismatches (e.g. illumination, expression, alignment, etc.) between gallery and probe images. In this paper, we demonstrate that representations of the face used during the verification process should be driven by their sensitivity to these mismatches. Two representation categories of the face are proposed, parts and reflectance, each motivated by their own properties of invariance and sensitivity to different types of mismatches (i.e. spatial and spectral). We additionally demonstrate that the employment of the sum rule gives approximately equivalent performance to more exotic combination strategies based on support vector machine (SVM) classifiers, without the need for training on a tuning set. Improved performance is demonstrated, with a reduction in false reject rate of over 30% when compared to the single representation algorithm. Experiments were conducted on a subset of the challenging face recognition grand challenge (FRGC) v1.0 dataset.

This work focuses on hardware implementations of the ambiguity function defined in terms of signal operators for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor image formation applications. Due to the large quantity of data associated with SAR imaging, basic SAR operations demand high computational cost and are difficult to readily implement on existing commercial digital signal processing (DSP) units. In order to contribute to resolve this problem a search for new efficient algorithm variants in under way compute operations such as discrete Fourier transforms, discrete convolutions, discrete correlations, and Hadamard products of complex signals. These operations are commonly used in the computation of the discrete ambiguity function. Time-frequency tools have been the object of many different studies in SAR image formation operations. The principle behind SAR image formation is recovering a desired reflectivity density function through an inverse convolution process on the raw data generation. It is this particular fact that makes the ambiguity function so important in SAR image formation since it serves to model the impulse response function or point spread function of the SAR system itself. Algorithms for computing the ambiguity designed for this work are being developed in MATLAB and implemented the TMS320C6713 digital signal processor (DSP) unit. The implementation methodology is based on hardware/software algorithm co-design techniques, taking into consideration software and hardware characteristics such as memory cache overflows, twiddle or phase factor pre-computations, extended memory addressing schemes, stride permutation implementations, pipelining schemes, multiply-add DSP architectures, multiple concurrent memory accessing schemes, and overall latency response.

The purpose of this work is to develop a time-frequency signal analysis system to detect and recognize different kinds of power quality events or disturbances. To achieve our goal, design of computational signal processing methods is being addressed developing time-frequency tools based on signal algebra operators. The use of signal algebra operators permits the formulation of time-frequency algorithms in a computational framework setting, allowing the search for efficient hardware implementations. Time-frequency formulations are being implemented for embedded system applications using digital signal processing (DSP) and field programmable gate array (FPGA) units. Voltage disturbances are responsible for many disruptions in industrial, commercial and residential power supply systems, causing time and monetary losses. It is necessary to identify fast methods of determining when these disturbances are occurring in order to make correct power quality decisions. Automated information processing systems are needed to assess existing problems. Although a lot of work has been done on power line disturbance assessment, new techniques are desired to address new challenging power quality issues, specially in the area of physical security. Time-frequency signal analysis is a well known tool used in fields such as speech, sonar, and radar processing and is now finding its being in power quality assessment. A time-frequency representation is a two-dimensional representation that shows how the spectral content of a given signal changes with time. There is a genuine interest in this kind of representations for the field of power quality signal analysis systems since they provide more information than the typical one dimensional analysis. To achieve the goals of this work an environment is being created using MATLAB to simulate power line signal disturbances such as swells, sags, harmonic distortions, and outages.
