The process of automatic identification of high level semantic entities (e.g., objects, concepts or events) in multimedia documents requires processing by means of algorithms that are used for feature extraction, i.e. low level information needed for the analysis of these documents at a semantic level. This work copes with the high and often prohibitive computational complexity of this procedure. Emphasis is given to a dynamic scheme that allows for efficient distribution of the available computational resources in application. This paper proposes a methodology for modeling the process of semantic identification and controlling its complexity and accuracy of the results. Each semantic entity is defined in terms of lower level semantic entities and low level features that can be automatically extracted, while different membership degrees are assigned to each one of the entities participating in a definition, depending on their importance for the identification. By selecting only a subset of the features that are used to define a semantic entity both complexity and accuracy of the results are reduced. It is possible, however, to design the identification using the metrics introduced, so that satisfactory results are obtained, while complexity remains below some required limit

We propose a new joint multiple matrix diagonalization algorithm for robust blind beamforming. This new algorithm is based on the iterative eigen-decomposition of cumulant matrices. Therefore it can avoid the stability and misadjustment problems arising among the conventional steepest-descent approaches for constant-modulus or cumulant optimization. In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance.

The computing power provided by high performance and low cost PC-based clusters and grid computing platforms are attractive and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes. In parallel, discussions on how to obtain more computing power from these computing platforms become an interesting issue. The development of applications for these high-performance computing platforms is complicated for several reasons: the complexity of applications themselves, which combines aspects of super computing and distributed computing, and by the need to achieve higher performance. This paper describes the design rationale and implementation of a parallel programming Web-based toolkit, to ease the parallel programming learning process, with the use of Web-based interface. The toolkit has widely been used in MPI parallel programming courses (both in graduate and undergraduate levels) and industry trainings.
