The focus of this invited keynote paper (to be presented by H.J. Siegel) is mixed-machine heterogeneous computing, where a suite of different kinds of high-performance machines are interconnected by high-speed links. Such a system can be orchestrated to perform an application whose subtasks have diverse execution requirements. Subtasks are assigned to and executed on the machines that will result in a minimal overall execution time for the task, considering factors including inter-machine communication overhead. A conceptual model of the automatic decomposition of tasks and assignment of subtasks is presented. Examples of static and dynamic approaches to the matching and scheduling of subtasks are summarized. Some open research problems are discussed.

In recent years, multi-view/3D video applications, such as three-dimensional television (3DTV) and free-viewpoint television (FTV), have drawn increasing attention. Since the amount of data that has to be stored or transmitted increases proportionally with the number of cameras, efficient compression of multi-view/3D video is crucial. Scalable multi-view video coding is one of the methods to address this challenge. But, in streaming multi-view/3D video over a network to heterogeneous receivers, efficient video compression while maintaining a high quality of received video is very challenging. This paper presents a novel method for rate-distortion optimization in scalable multi-view video. We apply the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions in minimizing the perceptual distortion of decoded video under the conditions that the sum of bits generated from different views is constrained within a given bit budget. Since the constraint-based optimization problem is usually computational intensive, our proposed approach considers the concept of disparity between layers and disparity between views to reduce this computational complexity. Simulation results indicate that the proposed approach is able to meet network bandwidth limitations with acceptable overall video quality.

We consider the greedy scheduling based on the physical model in wireless networks with successive interference cancellation (SIC). There are two major stages in a scheduling scheme, link selection (to decide which link is scheduled next) and time slot selection (to deciding which slot is allocated to a given link). Most available schemes take a first-fit policy in the latter and strive to achieve good performance by careful selection of link ordering with respect to interference. Due to the accumulation effect and sequential detection nature of SIC, however, it is difficult to evaluate the interference of a link. As a result, many existing scheduling schemes become less efficient. In this paper, we take a new look on the problem and focus to the time slot selection stage. We define tolerance margin to measure the saturation of a link set and present two heuristic policies: one is to schedule a link to a slot such that the resulting set of links has a maximum tolerance margin;the other is to choose a slot such that the increase of tolerance margin is minimum. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed schemes is better than the first-fit policy and is close to the optimal solution.
