Toward a Unified Characterization of Mapping Algorithms in Cloud and MPSoC Environments Using a Literature-Based Approach

To address the growing demand for high-quality multimedia applications on mobile devices, stronger smartphones based on multicore processors are becoming the mainstream. However, processing power is still behind the required resources for some multimedia applications such as new video coding standards. Mobile cloud computing is a solution for this concern. In order to efficiently distribute tasks onto an infrastructure of devices, a mapping algorithm is required. This algorithm should determine the suitable device in the cloud and should also allocate the corresponding core in the selected multicore device. Providing a suitable algorithm considering the two domains of cloud and Multiprocessor System on Chip (MPSoC) simultaneously is a challenge. Describing the mapping algorithms with a set of descriptive elements makes differentiation among them easier. Unification of these features on both domains results in simpler mapping algorithms. In this paper, we present a generic representation for the mapping algorithms in the MPSoC and cloud environments. Grounded Theory has been applied to identify the main features of the mapping algorithms. The obtained features are organized in more abstract categories based on their similarities. In order to evaluate the results, a few sample mapping algorithms from each of the cloud and MPSoC domains have been successfully characterized with the obtained features. © 2003-2010 IEEE.

In recent years, researchers have proposed several methods to transform time series (such as those of fractional Brownian motion) into complex networks. In this paper, we construct horizontal visibility networks (HVNs) based on the -stable Lévy motion. We aim to study the relations of multifractal and Laplacian spectrum of transformed networks on the parameters and of the -stable Lévy motion. First, we employ the sandbox algorithm to compute the mass exponents and multifractal spectrum to investigate the multifractality of these HVNs. Then we perform least squares fits to find possible relations of the average fractal dimension , the average information dimension and the average correlation dimension against using several methods of model selection. We also investigate possible dependence relations of eigenvalues and energy on , calculated from the Laplacian and normalized Laplacian operators of the constructed HVNs. All of these constructions and estimates will help us to evaluate the validity and usefulness of the mappings between time series and networks, especially between time series of -stable Lévy motions and HVNs.

In this paper, we present the dynamical equations of a nonlinear adaptive natural oscillator (NANO) in order to exploit the natural dynamics in robotic systems. The presented oscillator tries to minimize an energy-based cost function by adapting the shape and frequency of the reference trajectory. Stability, convergence, and optimality of this oscillator are guaranteed analytically. Moreover, the performance of this oscillator is investigated by applying it to three different types of robotic models;i.e., the pendulum, the adaptive-toy, and the hopper-leg.

As we are approaching the exascale era in supercomputing, designing a balanced computer system with powerful computing ability and low energy consumption becomes increasingly important. GPU is a widely used accelerator in most recently applied supercomputers. It adopts massive multithreads to hide long latency and has high energy efficiency. In contrast to its strong computing power, GPUs have few on-chip resources with several MB of fast on-chip memory storage per SM (Streaming Multiprocessors). GPU caches exhibit poor efficiency due to the mismatch of the throughput-oriented execution model and its cache hierarchy design. Since the severe deficiency in on-chip memory, the benefit of high computing capacity of GPUs is pulled down by the poor cache performance dramatically, which limits system performance and energy-efficiency. In this paper, we put forward a locality protected scheme to make full use of the data locality based on the fixed capacity. We present a Locality Protected method based on instruction PC (LPP) to promote GPU performance. Firstly, we use a PC-based collector to collect the reuse information of each cache line. After getting the dynamic reuse information of the cache line, we take an intelligent cache allocation unit (ICAU) which coordinates the reuse information with LRU (Least Recently Used) replacement policy to find out the cache line with the least locality for eviction. The results show that LPP provides an up to 17.8% speedup and an average of 5.5% improvement over the baseline method.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), clinically stable first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), healthy controls (HC) suggest alterations in neural oscillatory activity. However, few studies directly compare these anomalies among each types. Therefore, this study investigated whether these electrophysiological characteristics differentiate clinical populations from one another, and from non-psychiatric controls. To address this question, resting EEG power and coherence were assessed in 40 clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), 40 first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), and 40 healthy controls (HC). These findings suggest that resting EEG can be a sensitive measure for differentiating between clinical *** paper proposes a novel data-driven supervised learning method to obtain identification of the patients mental status in schizophrenia research. According to Marchenko-Pastur Law, the distribution of the eigenvalues of EEG data is divided into signal subspace and noise subspace. A test statistic named LES that embodies the characteristics of all eigenvalues is adopted. different classifier and different feature(LES test function) are selected for experiments, we have shown that using von Neumann Entropy as LES test function combine with SVM classifier could obtain the best average classification accuracy during three classification among HC, FES and CHR of Schizophrenia group with EEG signal. It is worth noting that the result of LES feature extraction with the highest classification accuracy is around 90% in two classification(HC compare with FES) and around 70% in three classification. Where the classification accuracy higher than 70% could be used to assist clinical diagnosis. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hierarchical routing algorithm for ad hoc networks using mobile VMN

One of the most significant challenges introduced by routing protocol in mobile networks is coping with the unpredictable motion and the unreliable behaviour of mobile nodes. In this paper, we present a hierarchical routing algorithm based on virtual mobile node (VMN). A routing path can be found rapidly by exchanging path information between VMNs without accurate topology information. We discuss the routing process and the implementing details of the proposed routing algorithm. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our hierarchical routing algorithm through simulations, and the results show that the number of mobile WAVE generated by routing algorithm is well satisfied with the quality of service (QoS) requirements of all source and destination nodes. Furthermore, we compare the performance on VMN failure and message delivery ratio using hierarchical and non-hierarchical routing approaches, the results show that we can obtain magnitude better performance by HRA-VMN than hierarchical state routing (HSR) and non-hierarchical routing approach. This paper proposes a two-staged approach to real-time human detection in cluttered environments using RGB-D camera. The first stage is a novel physical blob (P-Blob) detection that can quickly find plausible human heads. The second stage uses a combination of human upper-body features to filter out false positives. Experiment results on three publicly available datasets show that the proposed method can reliably detect people in RGB-D video in real time.

Electroencephalography is a non-invasive technique for recording brain bioelectric activity, which has potential applications in various fields such as human-computer interaction and neuroscience. Among them, analysis of the risk of schizophrenia using EEG data is a relatively new research topic. However, there are many difficulties in analyzing EEG data, including its complex composition, low amplitude as well as low signal-to-noise ratio. Some of the existing methods of analysis are based on feature extraction and machine learning to differentiate the phase of schizophrenia (First-episode schizophrenia, Healthy controls or Clinical high-risk) that samples belong to. However, medical research requires the use of machine learning not only to give more accurate classification results, but also to give the results that can be applied to pathological studies. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the weight values as the representation of influence of each frequency band on the classification of schizophrenia phases on the basis of a more effective classification method using the LES feature extraction, and then the weight values are processed and applied to improve the accuracy of machine learning classification. We propose a method called weight-voting to obtain the weights of sub-bands features by using results of classification for voting to fit the actual categories of EEG data, and using weights for reclassification. Through this method, we can first obtain the influence of each band in distinguishing three schizophrenia phases, and analyze the effect of band features on the risk of schizophrenia contributing to the study of psychopathology. In addition, the weights applied to the original classifier can achieve the upgrade of the classification effect, which contributes to the BCI-assisted system of diagnosis and treatment. The origin of artificial intelligence is investigated, based on which the concepts of hybrid intelligence and parallel intelligence are presented.
