Improving the channel utilization is a significant issue to enhance the performance in WLAN. This paper presents, Pillow Talks MAC (PT-MAC), a novel spectrum sharing mechanism to create an extra channel (pt-channel) for client- to-client transmission in WLAN. Obviously, The basic chal- lenge in our proposal is how pt-channel works concurrently and transparently with AP transmissions. To address the issue, in PT-MAC, selected clients are allowed to contend for pt-channel during uplink transmissions and talk freely under the ongoing downlink transmissions. Based on ad- vanced physical techniques, pt-channel transmitter receives and forwards the AP signals simultaneously within OFDM cyclic prefix, resulting in mixed signals are overheard by re- ceiver in pt-channel. However, the mixed message can be re- covered by pt-decoding system. Simulations and analytical results show that, PT-MAC reuses the spectrum in WLAN and achieves a throughput gain as large as 92% with similar fairness, when the ratio of downlink traffic is about 80%. © 2015 ACM.

This paper presents a novel extended multi-structure local binary pattern (EMSLBP) approach for high-resolution image classification, generalizing the well-known local binary pattern (LBP) approach. In the proposed EMSLBP approach, three-coupled descriptors with multi-structure sampling are proposed to extract complementary features (pixel value and radial difference) from local image patches. The anisotropic features derived from elliptical sampling are also rotation invariant by averaging the histograms over rotational angles and combined with the isotropic features extracted from circular sampling. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively capture local spatial pattern and local contrast, consistently outperforming several state-of-the-art classification algorithms.

Capturing throughput-delay tradeoff in wireless networks has drawn considerable attention, as it could bring better usage experience by considering different requirements of throughput/delay demands. Traditional works consider only typical single-channel single-interface networks, whereas multichannel multi-interface (MCMI) networks will become mainstream since they provide concurrent transmissions in different channels, which in turn helps each node to obtain better performance. Unlike previous works, this paper investigates the throughput-delay tradeoff for MCMI random networks. Two queuing systems, i.e., the M/M/m queuing system and the m M/M/1 queuing system, are established for MCMI nodes, and a parameter in routing implementation named routing deviation is also considered in the analytical model. This paper studies concurrent transmission capacity (CTC) using the physical interference model and also explores the impact on CTC of different physical parameters. Moreover, the relations between throughput and delay are achieved using two queuing systems in MCMI random networks respectively. The deterministic results obtained with a group of real network configuration parameters demonstrate that the proposed tradeoff model could be applied to the real network scenarios. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper presents a new method for counterattack detection using estimated camera motion and evaluates some classification methods to detect this event. To this end, video is partitioned to shots and view type of each shot is recognized first. Then, relative pan of the camera during far-view and medium-view shots is estimated. After weighting of pan value of each frame according to the type of shots, the video is partitioned to motion segments. Then, motion segments are refined to achieve better results. Finally, the features extracted from consecutive motion segments are investigated for counterattack detection. We propose two methods for counterattack detection: (1) rule-based (heuristic rules) and (2) SVM-based. Experiments show that the SVM classifier with linear or RBF kernel results in the best results. © 2015 IEEE.

Cluster analysis is important in scientific and industrial fields. In this study, we proposed a novel chaotic biogeography-based optimization(CBBO) method, and applied it in centroid-based clustering methods. The results over three types of simulation data showed that this proposed CBBO method gave better performance than chaotic particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, firefly algorithm, and quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. In all, our CBBO method is effective in centroid-based clustering.

A one-sided programming model separates communication from synchronization, and is the driving principle behind partitioned global address space (PGAS) libraries such as Global Arrays (GA) and SHMEM. PGAS models expose a rich set of functionality that a developer needs in order to implement mathematical algorithms that require frequent multidimensional array accesses. However, use of existing PGAS libraries in application codes often requires significant development effort in order to fully exploit these programming models. On the other hand, a vast majority of scientific codes use MPI either directly or indirectly via third-party scientific computation libraries, and need features to support application-specific communication requirements (e.g., asynchronous update of distributed sparse matrices, commonly arising in machine learning workloads). For such codes it is often impractical to completely shift programming models in favor of special one-sided communication middleware. Instead, an elegant and productive solution is to exploit the one-sided functionality already offered by MPI-3 RMA (Remote Memory Access). We designed a general one-sided interface using the MPI-3 passive RMA model for remote matrix operations in the linear algebra library Elemental, we call the interface we designed RMAInterface. Elemental is an open source library for distributed-memory dense and sparse linear algebra and optimization. We employ RMAInterface to construct a Global Arrays-like API and demonstrate its performance scalability and competitivity with that of the existing GA (with ARMCI-MPI) for a quantum chemistry application.

For the problem of compute nodes load unbalance leads to the overload node impact VM performance and the underload node waste electrical energy. Dynamic VM consolidation is an efficient approach for improving the utilization of servers and reducing energy costs. In this paper, we introduce dynamic consolidation into OpenStack and implement AMVM based on OpenStack. AMVM collect and analyze all performance data of VM and compute node in OpenStack. Then AMVM automatically schedules VM live migrate to the most appropriate node according to the real-time load of all compute nodes. Then we use hybrid-copy instead of pre-copy in AMVM to improve the efficiency of VM live migration. Finally, we analyze the performance of hybrid-copy, hybrid-copy can reduce page faults compared with post-copy and reduce total data transferred compared with pre-copy. © 2016 SERSC.

Diagnosis of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) is difficult due to the variability of obvious brain lesions using imaging scans. A promising tool for exploring potential biomarkers for mTBI is magnetoencephalography which has the advantage of high spatial and temporal resolution. By adopting proper analytic tools from the field of symbolic dynamics like Lempel-Ziv complexity, we can objectively characterize neural network alterations compared to healthy control by enumerating the different patterns of a symbolic sequence. This procedure oversimplifies the rich information of brain activity captured via MEG. For that reason, we adopted neural-gas algorithm which can transform a time series into more than two symbols by learning brain dynamics with a small reconstructed error. The proposed analysis was applied to recordings of 30 mTBI patients and 50 normal controls in δ frequency band. Our results demonstrated that mTBI patients could be separated from normal controls with more than 97% classification accuracy based on high complexity regions corresponding to right frontal areas. In addition, a reverse relation between complexity and transition rate was demonstrated for both groups. These findings indicate that symbolic complexity could have a significant predictive value in the development of reliable biomarkers to help with the early detection of mTBI.

Coordination among users is inevitable in wireless communication for efficient medium access. Even though the data rate of individual user increases significantly, the performance of wireless network does not grow up accordingly due to the high MAC coordination overhead. In this paper, we present VFA, namely virtual frame aggregation, to achieve high coordination efficiency by amortizing the overhead over multiple transmissions. VFA provides a novel way to construct a winner cluster and allow the winners to transmit without interruption. Specifically, in a multicarrier network, every contending node chooses a subcarrier and the nodes are ordered by the index of the chosen subcarrier. When there are some subcarriers chosen by two or more nodes, an additional slot is exploited to reorder the collided nodes. Finally, all ordered nodes form a cluster and the transmissions are issued sequentially and uninterruptedly. Simulation results show that usually two slots are enough to construct a sufficiently large winner cluster. Moreover, VFA achieves a notable throughput gain over IEEE 802.11 as high as 120% with better fairness under various scenarios.

Tattoos can provide useful information related to criminal gang activity. Law enforcement can use the information embedded in tattoos to identify and track the criminal history of a suspect. For matching processes, tattoo images are difficult to use due to problems such as deformations and weak edge structures. In this paper we describe a tattoo image retrieval and matching system based on a combination of local and global image matching methods to improve matching accuracy. The proposed local shape context combined with SIFT descriptors are used for local features of a tattoo object and global shape is used for overall shape of a tattoo object. The contributions of this paper include the introduction of a multiple different sized-bin polar histograms based local shape context (MHLC) and a global shape descriptor combining the multiple different sized-bin polar histogram and 2D Fourier Transform for robustness of translation, scale, rotation and shape distortions. We also describe robust similarity for local descriptors and a weighted matching method based on local and global descriptors. Our experimental results show that our proposed method performs better than previously published tattoo image retrieval systems.
