For the spatially correlated multiuser MIMO-OFDM channels, the conventional iterative MMSE-SIC detection suffers from a considerable performance loss. In this paper, we use the factor graph framework to design robust detection algorithms by clustering a group of symbols to combat the spatial correlation and using the principle of expectation propagation to improve message passing. Furthermore, as the complexity of detection becomes one of the issues in the design of large-scale multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems, we propose a low-complexity approximate message-passing algorithm by opening the channel transition node, which eliminates the expensive matrix inversions involved in the MMSE-SIC based algorithms. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the proposed algorithms. © 2014 IEEE.

As one of key technologies in photovoltaic converter control, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods can keep the power conversion efficiency as high as nearly 99% under the uniform solar irradiance condition. However, these methods may fail when shading conditions occur and the power loss can over as much as 70% due to the multiple maxima in I-P curve in shading conditions v.s. single maximum point in uniformly solar irradiance. In this paper, a Real Maximum Power Point Tracking (RMPPT) strategy under Partially Shaded Conditions (PSCs) is introduced to deal with this kind of problems. An optimization problem, based on a predictive model which will change adaptively with environment, is developed to tracking the global maxima and corresponding adaptive control strategy is presented. No additional circuits are required to obtain the environment uncertainties. Finally, simulations show the effectiveness of proposed method. © IFAC.

Noisy whisper contaminated by different types of noise are enhanced by compressive sensing method. The intelligibility performance of the enhanced whisper is measured using the short time objective index (STOI). To assess the effect of spectra density on compressive sensing, the real-valued discrete Gabor transform is used to transform the noisy whisper into the time-frequency domain. Experimental results show that, similar to conventional speech enhancement algorithm, the compressive sensing based speech enhancement method can not efficiently improve intelligibility of the whisper. © 2014 IEEE.

The need to create useful information from full motion video gathered by drones is a significant motivation for devising methods to approximate human cognitive behaviors. Additionally, the regulatory needs associated with drone systems has spawned the requirement to be able to confirm, or audit, the activities of such devices. A conditional approach, as compared with a generalized video processing environment, is presented that associates practical and realistic constraints to simplify the problem of finding useful information from video acquired by a drone into something that is tractable and consistent with real-world requirements. A primary contribution of this paper is to introduce the concept of continuous cognition from a theoretical perspective, followed by a practical application derived from an operational system.

We propose a fusion approach to spoken language recognition by combining multiple tokenizers with phone and speech attribute models trained on a collection of multilingual corpora with different front-end features. The speech attribute models are trained with bottleneck features extracted from deep neural networks while the phone models are trained with temporal patterns neural network features. By exploiting different combinations of front-end features, fundamental speech units and tokenization models, we demonstrate that speech attribute units are complementary to phone units and produce enhanced performances when they are combined with conventional phone based tokenizers. Tested on the National Institute of Standards and Technology 2009 language recognition evaluation task, leveraged upon diversity in system combination, we find that speech attribute recognition followed by language modeling achieves an additional average relative equal error rate reduction of more than 20% when fused with the state-of-the-art systems with phone recognition followed by language modeling.

In this paper, we propose a transfer learning approach to adapt a well-trained model obtained with high-resource materials of one language to another target language using a small amount of adaptation data for speech enhancement based on deep neural networks (DNNs). We investigate the performance degradation issues of enhancing noisy Mandarin speech data using DNN models already trained with only English speech materials, and vice versa. By assuming that the hidden layers of the well-trained DNN regression model as a cascade of feature extractors, we hypothesize that the first several layers should be transferable between languages. Our experimental results indicate that even with only about 1 minute of adaptation data from the resource-limited language we can achieve a considerable performance improvement over the DNN model without cross-language transfer learning.

This paper addresses the problem of infinite time performance of model predictive controllers applied to constrained nonlinear systems. The total performance is compared with a finite horizon optimal cost to reveal performance limits of closed-loop model predictive control systems. Based on the Principle of Optimality, an upper and a lower bound of the ratio between the total performance and the finite horizon optimal cost are obtained explicitly expressed by the optimization horizon. The results also illustrate, from viewpoint of performance, how model predictive controllers approaches to infinite optimal controllers as the optimization horizon increases. © IFAC.

Semi-supervised clustering aims at boosting the clustering performance on unlabeled samples by using labels from a few labeled samples. Constrained NMF (CNMF) is one of the most significant semi-supervised clustering methods, and it factorizes the whole dataset by NMF and constrains those labeled samples from the same class to have identical encodings. In this paper, we propose a novel soft-constrained NMF (SCNMF) method by softening the hard constraint in CNMF. Particularly, SCNMF factorizes the whole dataset into two lower-dimensional factor matrices by using multiplicative update rule (MUR). To utilize the labels of labeled samples, SCNMF iteratively normalizes both factor matrices after updating them with MURs to make encodings of labeled samples close to their label vectors. It is therefore reasonable to believe that encodings of unlabeled samples are also close to their corresponding label vectors. Such strategy significantly boosts the clustering performance even when the labeled samples are rather limited, e.g., each class owns only a single labeled sample. Since the normalization procedure never increases the computational complexity of MUR, SCNMF is quite efficient and effective in practices. Experimental results on face image datasets illustrate both efficiency and effectiveness of SCNMF compared with both NMF and CNMF.

Projective non-negative matrix factorization (PNMF) projects a set of examples onto a subspace spanned by a non-negative basis whose transpose is regarded as the projection matrix. Since PNMF learns a natural parts-based representation, it has been successfully used in text mining and pattern recognition. However, it is non-trivial to analyze the convergence of the optimization algorithms for PNMF because its objective function is non-convex. In this paper, we propose a Box-constrained PNMF (BPNMF) method to overcome this deficiency of PNMF. In particular, BPNMF introduces an auxiliary variable, i.e., the coefficients of examples, and incorporates the following two types of constraints: 1) each entry of the basis is non-negative and upper-bounded, i.e., box-constrained, and 2) the coefficients equal to the projected points of the examples. The first box constraint makes the basis to be bound and the second equality constraint keeps its equivalence to PNMF. Similar to PNMF, BPNMF is difficult because the objective function is non-convex. To solve BPNMF, we developed an efficient algorithm in the frame of augmented Lagrangian multiplier (ALM) method and proved that the ALM-based algorithm converges to local minima. Experimental results on two face image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of BPNMF compared with the representative methods.

Offloading is an efficient method for extending the lifetime and speeding up the execution rate of mobile devices by executing remotely in mobile cloud computing (MCC) networks. Meanwhile, heterogeneous network (HetNet), which has multiple types of radio access nodes in the network, is widely accepted as a promising way to satisfy the increased traffic demand. In this paper, we first propose two delayoptimized offloading control schemes in LTE-Advanced heterogeneous networks. One of them is to control the number of offloading users by setting a threshold. Another is to determine whether the users are suited to offload by estimating the execution delay. Both of them take the traffic load of serving cell and neighbouring cells into account. For comparison purpose, the delay performance of different schemes are evaluated by simulations in not only heterogeneous network but also macro-only network. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2014.
