A novel image compression algorithm based on generalized principal component analysis (GPCA) is proposed in this work. Each image block is first classified into a subspace and is represented with a linear combination of the basis vectors for the subspace. Therefore, the encoded information consists of subspace indices, basis vectors and transform coefficients. We adopt a vector quantization scheme and a predictive partial matching scheme to encode subspace indices and basis vectors, respectively. We also propose a rate-distortion optimized quantizer to encode transform coefficients efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides better compression performance than JPEG, especially at low bitrates

Presented in this paper is a neural network method used for recognition of spherical bodies set grain-size distribution using a data taken from envelope surface of a given set. Development was carried out in accordance with principles designed for neurocomputer-based measurement devices. These principles concern measurement devices featured by complicated nonlinear dependency between physical parameter being measured and indirect measurement values. In simple applications this dependency is substituted by scale calibration function for this measurement device. Results presented in this article were obtained using 3D-model set. Diameters of bodies, included in this set, lit the range used as standard at ore mining and processing enterprises. Described herein are the neural network algorithm, as well as a method used for informative training and test sets composition, required for effective training and verification of neural network system. Moreover, we present a comparison between neural network approach and known linear methods.

In this work, we propose an evolutionary-like approach to the problem of blind adaptive spatial filtering that is based on the decision-directed criterion and on the dopt-aiNet, an artificial immune network conceived to perform multimodal search in dynamic environments. The proposal was tested under static and time-varying undermodeled channel models, and, in all cases, its ability to find and track a solution close to the Wiener global optimum was attested. The obtained results reveal that the dopt-aiNet may decisively enhance the performance of adaptive arrays in scenarios built from elements that are representative of some aspects of real-world communication systems.

In clinical problems, numerous factors are usually involved in a medical syndrome. New advances in medicine provide a broad range of diagnosis methods to cover all aspects of a disease. However, huge amounts of raw information may confuse clinicians and decrease decision accuracy. computerized knowledge extraction is an active area of research in medical informatics. This paper suggests a new medical data mining approach using an advanced swarm intelligence data mining algorithm. Considering medical knowledge discovery difficulties, this approach addresses common issues such as missing value management and interactive rule extraction. Here, surgery candidate selection in temporal lobe epilepsy is the main target application. However, the general idea can be applied to other medical knowledge discovery problems. Experimental results show noticeable performance improvement in the final rule-set quality while the method is flexible and fast.

In this research, we developed a three-dimensional finite-difference-time-domain algorithm that incorporated the Lorentz-Drude model through the use of Z-transform technique. This algorithm was used to compute the spectral response of infrared bandpass filters which consisted of the openings of cross-shaped structures in a thin gold film. In creating structures, a graphical user interface was built using Matlab development environment. The created structures were then simulated by running the simulation code written in Fortran. It was observed that cross-shaped structures with large center-broadening effect yielded the highest transmission intensity among the structures that were simulated with a transmittance of approximately 80% at the wavelength of 1.2 μm.
