This paper addresses the problem of infinite time performance of model predictive controllers applied to constrained nonlinear systems. The total performance is compared with a finite horizon optimal cost to reveal performance limits of closed-loop model predictive control systems. Based on the Principle of Optimality, an upper and a lower bound of the ratio between the total performance and the finite horizon optimal cost are obtained explicitly expressed by the optimization horizon. The results also illustrate, from viewpoint of performance, how model predictive controllers approaches to infinite optimal controllers as the optimization horizon increases. © IFAC.

A multilingual Input/Output (I/O) system has been designed based on typological studies of writing conventions of major world languages. Designed as a layered structure, it unifies common features of writing conventions and is intended to ease international and local functionalities. The input module of the internationalization layer converts phonograms to ideograms. The corresponding output module displays positionindependent characters and position-dependent characters. The localization layer positions highly language-specific functions outside the structure. These functions are integrated as tables and servers to add new languages without the necessity of compilation. The I/O system interactively generates both stateful and stateless code sets. Beyond the boundaries of the POSIX locale model, the system generates ISO 2022, ISO/DIS IO646, and Compound Text, defined for the interchange encoding format in X11 protocols, for basic polyglot text processing. Possessing the capability of generating multilingual code sets, this I/O system clearly shows that code sets should be selected by applications with purposes beyond the selection of one element from a set of localization. Likewise, functionality and functions relating to text manipulation in an operating system should be determined by such applications. A subset of this I/O system was implemented in the X window system as a basic X11R5 I/O capability by supplying basic code set generation and string manipulation to avoid interference from operating systems. To ensure the possibility of polyglot string manipulation, the I/O system clearly should be implemented separately from the operating system with its limitations. © 1991 ACM.

The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s- cess. We would like to especially thank Hong Lu for local organization, Qi Zhang for handling the publication of the proceedings, and Cheng Jin for looking after the c- ference website and publicity. Cyber Movement Organization (CMO) is a special kind of social movement organization on the Web. In this paper, we propose a model to simulate the mobilizing process of CMO, which consists of the individual unit, organization unit, and the mobilizing mechanisms. The mobilizing mechanisms has three sub-mechanisms: the participation mechanism, the choice mechanism, and the inviting mechanism. A dataset of more than two million "human flesh search" related microblogs is used to validate the model. Empirical results show that our model can capture the key features of the real-world mobilizing process. © IFAC.

Assessing the Impact of Cascading Failures on the Interdomain Routing system of the Internet

The Internet is a typical complex network, whose traffic load is controlled by the inter-domain routing system. Due to the co-location of data plane and control plane of Border Gateway Protocol, the survivability of inter-domain routing system is sensitive to severe congestion. Therefore, an initial outage may lead to a cascade of failures in the Internet. But the cascading failures on links are able to be automatically restored when the congestion is mitigated. In this paper, we propose a model - CAFEIN for characterizing this special process. Based on CAFEIN, we assess the difference of impact under intentional attacks and random breakdowns; identify the worst affected part of the Internet; and study the propagation of cascading failures. Through simulations, we find that the cascading failures bring a great deal of added burden to the routing system. However, the cascading effect is amplified globally when the relative capacity of links is very low. Moreover, the difference of impact between intentional attack and random breakdown is not as prominent as previous research due to the unique automatic-restoration process.

This article is concerned with the design and performance optimization of feedback controllers for state-based switching bilinear systems (SBLSs), where subsystems take the form of bilinear systems in different state space polyhedra. First, by further dividing the subregions into smaller regions and designing region-dependent feedback controllers in the resulting regions, the SBLSs can be transformed into corresponding switching linear systems (SLSs). Then, for these SLSs, by imposing contractility conditions on the Lyapunov functions, an upper bound on the infinite horizon quadratic cost can be obtained. Optimizing this upper bound yields the controller design. The optimization problem is formulated as a linear matrix inequalities optimization problem, which can be solved efficiently. Finally, the stability of the close-loop system under the proposed controller is established step by step through a decreasing overall Lyapunov function. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

SNNs have achieved great attention in recent years as they contain neurons more like those in the brain and use spikes to encode and transmit information efficiently among neurons with lower energy consumption. A Retina-LGN-V1 structure-like spiking neuron network (RLVSL-SNN) is proposed in this paper. It is inspired by the structure of mammalian primary visual pathway, and simulates different biological structures of Retina, LGN and V1. Noise reduction circuit and light adaptation circuit are also simulated for enhancing the robustness of its extracted features. RLVSL-SNN is a bio-plausible neuron network as it has firing rates of neurons in each layer that are similar to those of biological experiments. Besides, a full-connected SNN (FC SNN) is implemented following RLVSL-SNN for classification to evaluate the extracted features. The additive spiking timing dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rules and the ANN-to-SNN conversion method are utilized to train RLVSL-SNN and FC SNN, respectively. The experiments on MNIST dataset have verified that RLVSL-SNN is comparable to AlexNet for classification by features from spikes.

The concerns of data-intensiveness and energy awareness are actively reshaping the design of high-performance computing (HPC) systems nowadays. The Graph500 is a widely adopted benchmark for evaluating the performance of computing systems for data-intensive workloads. In this paper, we introduce a data-parallel implementation of Graph500 on the Intel Single-chip Cloud computer (SCC). The SCC features a non-coherent many-core architecture and multi-domain on-chip DVFS support for dynamic power management. With our custom-made shared virtual memory programming library, memory sharing among threads is done efficiently via the shared physical memory (SPM) while the library has taken care of the coherence. We conduct an in-depth study on the power and performance characteristics of the Graph500 workloads running on this system with varying system scales and power states. Our experimental results are insightful for the design of energy-efficient many-core systems for data-intensive applications.
