A novel 3D point cloud learning model for deep LiDAR odometry, named PWCLO-Net, using hierarchical embedding mask optimization is proposed in this paper. In this model, the Pyramid, Warping, and Cost volume (PWC) structure for the LiDAR odometry task is built to refine the estimated pose in a coarse-to-fine approach hierarchically. An attentive cost volume is built to associate two point clouds and obtain embedding motion patterns. Then, a novel trainable embedding mask is proposed to weigh the local motion patterns of all points to regress the overall pose and filter outlier points. The estimated current pose is used to warp the first point cloud to bridge the distance to the second point cloud, and then the cost volume of the residual motion is built. At the same time, the embedding mask is optimized hierarchically from coarse to fine to obtain more accurate filtering information for pose refinement. The trainable pose warp-refinement process is iteratively used to make the pose estimation more robust for outliers. The superior performance and effectiveness of our LiDAR odometry model are demonstrated on KITTI odometry dataset. Our method outperforms all recent learning-based methods and outperforms the geometry-based approach, LOAM with mapping optimization, on most sequences of KITTI odometry *** source codes will be released on https://***/IRMVLab/PWCLONet. As a new Internet architecture, Named Data Networking (NDN) decouples location from the data itself to achieve security, scalability, and mobility. Although router-side data caching used in NDN reduces data acquisition delay, it introduces a new copyright protection challenge: how to prevent unauthorized users to retrieve data cached in routers that are out of the control of its publisher? Current approaches that rely on a common encryption key among authorized users cannot protect copyright well since if one authorized user secretly leaks the key, we cannot tell who has leaked the key out. In this paper, we present a split-based scheme to solve this copyright protection problem for large-sized data. The data is split into a large part that could be cached in routers for all users to retrieve, and a small part that is unique for each authorized user. This scheme exploits the fact that in the bit-wise OR operation, both bit 0 and bit 1 can OR with 1 to generate the same result of bit 1. The analysis of our scheme shows that it has a good performance in terms of copyright protection, data retrieval efficiency, and overhead.

Lightweight image super-resolution aims to reconstruct high-resolution images from low-resolution images using low computational costs. However, existing methods result in the loss of middle-layer features due to activation functions. To minimize the impact of intermediate feature loss on reconstruction quality, we propose a Feature Interaction Weighted Hybrid Network (FIWHN), which comprises a series of Wide-residual Distillation Interaction Block (WDIB) as the backbone. Every third WDIB forms a Feature Shuffle Weighted Group (FSWG) by applying mutual information shuffle and fusion. Moreover, to mitigate the negative effects of intermediate feature loss, we introduce Wide Residual Weighting units within WDIB. These units effectively fuse features of varying levels of detail through a Wide-residual Distillation Connection (WRDC) and a Self-Calibrating Fusion (SCF). To compensate for global feature deficiencies, we incorporate a Transformer and explore a novel architecture to combine CNN and Transformer. We show that our FIWHN achieves a favorable balance between performance and efficiency through extensive experiments on low-level and high-level tasks. When a large-scale distributed interactive simulation system is running on WAN, the sites usually disperse over a wide area in geography, which results in the simulation clock of each site is hardly to be accurately synchronized with that of other sites. The asynchronous clocks and large transmission latency on WAN bring on a problem for the large-scale simulations to preserve the real-time causal order delivery of received events at each site. In this article, we analyze the indirect way to compare the values of asynchronous simulation clocks at first, and then propose a novel scheme which can select the reconstructible causal control information for each message so as to ensure the causal ordering of events in real time. Experiments demonstrate that the scheme can weaken the effect of network latency, reduce the overhead of the transmission amount of control information and improve the causal order consistency in asynchronous distributed simulations.

Virtualization is the foundation for cloud computing, and the virtualization can not be achieved without software defined, elastic, flexible and scalable virtual layers. Unfortunately, if multiple virtual storage devices are chained together, the system may be subject to severe performance degradation. While the read-ahead (RA) mechanism in storage devices plays a very important role to improve I/O performance, RA may not be effective as expected for multiple virtualization layers, since it is originally designed for one layer only. When I/O requests are passed through a long I/O path, they may trigger a chain reaction and lead to unnecessary data transmission and thus bandwidth waste. In this paper, we study the dynamic behavior of RA through multiple I/O layers and demonstrate that if controlled well, RA can greatly accelerate I/O speed. We present RAFlow, a RA control mechanism, to effectively improve I/O performance by strategically expanding RA window at each layer. Our real-world experiments show that it can achieve 20% to 50% performance improvement in I/O paths with up to 8 virtualized storage devices.

Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual labeling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise Label Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a devastating disease. In this paper, we propose a novel method for scoring of air trapping in the lungs for detection and evaluation of COPD. The proposed method finds volumetric changes of the lungs from inspiration to expiration. To this end, trachea CT images at full inspiration and expiration are compared. For this comparison, the lungs parenchyma in the inspiration and expiration images are found and changes in the surface and volume of the lungs between inspiration and expiration are used to define quantitative measures (features). Using these features, the subjects are classified into two groups of normal class and COPD patients using a Bayesian classifier. In addition, t-tests are applied to evaluate discrimination powers of the features for this classification. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to estimate air trapping in the lungs from CT images without human intervention. The proposed method may assists radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. It may also assist them with the scoring of the disease (severity of air trapping in the lungs). © 2011 IEEE.

Demonstration Guided Actor-Critic Deep Reinforcement Learning for Fast Teaching of Robots in Dynamic Environments

Using direct reinforcement learning (RL) to accomplish a task can be very inefficient, especially in robotic configurations where interactions with the environment are lengthy and costly. Instead, learning from expert demonstration (LfD) is an alternative approach to gain better performance in an RL setting, which also greatly improves sample efficiency. We propose a novel demonstration learning framework for actor-critic based algorithms. Firstly, we put forward an environment pre-training paradigm to initialize the model parameters without interacting with the target environment, which effectively avoids the cold start problem in deep RL scenarios. Secondly, we design a general-purpose LfD framework for most of the mainstream actor-critic RL algorithms that include a policy network and a value function like PPO, SAC, TRPO, A3C. Thirdly, we build a dedicated model training platform to perform the human-robot interaction and numerical experimentation. We evaluate the method in six Mujoco simulated locomotion environments and our robot control simulation platform. Results show that several epochs of pre-training can improve the agent’s performance over the early stage of training. Also, the final converged performance of the RL algorithm is also boosted by external demonstration. In general the sample efficiency is improved by 30% with the proposed method. Our demonstration pipeline makes full use of the exploration property of the RL algorithm, which is feasible for fast teaching robots in dynamic environments.

An Adaptive Predictive Control Strategy for RMPPT under Partially Shaded Conditions

As one of key technologies in photovoltaic converter control, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods can keep the power conversion efficiency as high as nearly 99% under the uniform solar irradiance condition. However, these methods may fail when shading conditions occur and the power loss can over as much as 70% due to the multiple maxima in I – P curve in shading conditions v.s. single maximum point in uniformly solar irradiance. In this paper, a Real Maximum Power Point Tracking (RMPPT) strategy under Partially Shaded Conditions (PSCs) is introduced to deal with this kind of problems. An optimization problem, based on a predictive model which will change adaptively with environment, is developed to tracking the global maxima and corresponding adaptive control strategy is presented. No additional circuits are required to obtain the environment uncertainties. Finally, simulations show the effectiveness of proposed method.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung diseases that block airflow and cause a huge degree of human suffering. While there is no cure for COPD and the lung damage that results in this disease cannot be reversed, it is very important to diagnose it as early as possible. Additional to diagnosis, using a mathematical model to estimate severity of disease would be helpful for evaluation of treatment effects. This paper presents a new method for identifying COPD from three-dimensional (3-D) pulmonary X-ray CT images. The method has five main steps. First, corresponding positions of lungs in inspiration and expiration are found based on anatomical structures. Then, lung regions are segmented from the CT images by active contours. Next, the left and right lungs are separated using a sequence of morphological operations. Then, parenchyma variations in each lung are found as a relationship between inspiratory and expiratory states. Finally, a classifier is used to decide about the disease and its severity. A t-test is done to evaluate the results. Twelve patients with variable severity of COPD and twelve normal adults were included in this study. The proposed method may assist radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. © 2011 IEEE.
