Internet computing and grid technologies promise to change the way we tackle complex problems. They will enable large-scale aggregation and sharing of computational, data and other resources across institutional boundaries. As grid computing is becoming a reality, there is a need for managing and monitoring the available resources worldwide, as well as the need for conveying these resources to the everyday user. This paper describes a resource broker with its main function as to match the available resources to the user's needs. The use of the resource broker provides a uniform interface to access any of the available and appropriate resources using user's credentials. The resource broker runs on top of the Globus toolkit. Therefore, it provides security and current information about the available resources and serves as a link to the diverse systems available in the grid.
In order to obtain a low-cost, low-power consumption and small sized digital home processing center, especially for multimedia applications, we propose a scalable wallet-size cluster computing system in this paper. Su...

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance.

The computing power provided by high performance and low cost PC-based clusters and grid computing platforms are attractive and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes. In parallel, discussions on how to obtain more computing power from these computing platforms become an interesting issue. The development of applications for these high-performance computing platforms is complicated for several reasons: the complexity of applications themselves, which combines aspects of super computing and distributedcomputing, and by the need to achieve higher performance. This paper describes the design rationale and implementation of a parallel programming Web-based toolkit, to ease the parallel programming learning process, with the use of Web-based interface. The toolkit has widely been used in MPI parallel programming courses (both in graduate and undergraduate levels) and industry trainings.

Cluster and grid computing is a relatively new interdisciplinary field, where computerscience, engineering and computational biology are its core supporting disciplines. The rise of cluster and grid computing discipline brings to computerscience faculty members new opportunities and challenges, both in education and in research. In this paper, we explore issues in teaching cluster and grid computing, the developing of curricula, and thoughts to foster student to work on research projects in cluster and grid computing.

In this paper, the authors presented the grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, it is shown that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, grid roles can be categorized into three types. It was aimed, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To fulfill the architecture, an existing parallel decision tree algorithm was first applied (the SPRINT algorithm) to the grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development.

Routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have assumed that all nodes voluntarily participate in forwarding others' packets. This was a reasonable assumption because all nodes in previous MANETs belonged to a single authority. In the near future, however, a MANET may consist of nodes that belong to multiple organizations since various civilian applications are expected to appear. In this situation, mobile nodes may deliberately avoid packet forwarding to save their own energy, resulting in network partition. To make nodes volunteer in packet forwarding we suggest a payment scheme called protocol-independent fairness algorithm (PIFA). In this type of schemes, nodes need credits to transmit their own packets, and this credit can be earned by forwarding others' packets. PIFA can be utilized irrespective of the type of basic routing protocols, while previous methods are compatible only with source routing like DSR. Simulation results show that PIFA can prevent network partition and network performance degradation due to selfish nodes by inducing them to participate in forwarding packets.

A home network service middleware called "UKARI-Kernel" has been proposed for distributed and collaborative networked appliances and networked sensors. A home network service can be established by the middleware using distributed function elements on the networked appliances. The middleware uses a service scenario description framework on the basis of BPEL, an XML language to define business processes, to set up the service according to the present situation. In this paper, we describe the overview and of the home network service middleware and its service scenario description. Then implementation of an emulator for the service scenario description framework is reported. It is noted that the proposed description framework can be constructed easily by using the existing toolkits

Collaborative editing is a subset of groupware system. Groupware or computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) application is "a computer-based system that supports groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment". This research area is also known as collaborative computing. Collaborative environment enables computer-based collaboration in wide-area network, static and dynamic resource sharing and instant or delayed feedback from collaborators. The objective of a collaborative environment is to allow coherent and consistent object sharing and manipulation by distributed users. Some examples of collaborative activities include desktop conferencing, cooperative document editing, cooperative designing and modeling. Consistency management mechanisms are needed to resolve conflicting actions performed by multiple users. Conflicting actions include simultaneous modification of shared data and out-of-order of data arrival and data execution due to communication delay.
