Key Message Approach to Optimize Communication of parallel Applications on Clusters

Over the past few years, cluster/distributed computing has been gaining popularity. The proliferation of the cluster/distributed computing is due to the improved performance and increased reliability of these systems. Many parallel programming languages and related parallel programming models have become widely accepted. However, one of the major shortcomings of running parallel applications on cluster/distributed computing environments is the high communication overhead incurred. To reduce the communication overhead, and thus the completion time of a parallel application, this paper describes a simple, efficient and portable Key Message (KM) approach to support parallel computing on cluster/distributed computing environments. To demonstrate the advantage of the KM approach, a prototype runtime system has been implemented and evaluated. Our preliminary experimental results show that the KM approach has better improvement on communication of a parallel application when network background load increases or the computation to communication ratio of the application decreases.

The surge in real-time IoT data introduces scalability and computational challenges, necessitating advanced architectural and technological solutions. Streamed data processing is increasingly adopted across industries to enhance operational efficiency by extracting insights from vast, unstructured datasets. However, complex analytical tasks, such as multi-join queries, often require stateful iterative calculations on high-volume, high-velocity data, which challenges conventional programming models like MapReduce. This paper introduces an architectural model enabling application developers to create intricate streaming computational logic within an IoT platform. Our architecture supports scalable applications across distributed edge-tier nodes, particularly for iterative analytical operations on streamed data. We discuss core concepts and a timestamp model (borrowed from the timely data-flow concept) attached to data items circulating between computational blocks, which can execute concurrently on different edge-tier nodes. Additionally, we detail a buffer management mechanism that dynamically adjusts memory size in each computational block on nodes with limited capacity. This mechanism considers application performance requirements and runtime conditions to optimize buffer sizes. Performance evaluation against cloud-tier alternatives confirms the effectiveness of our solution. Experimental results show a significant reduction in p-99 delay compared to cloud-tier deployment with a database engine for analytical applications involving multi-join operations. © 2024 IEEE.

Existing routing protocols for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are generally optimized with statistical link measures, while not addressing on the intrinsic uncertainty of wireless links. We show evidence that, with the transient link uncertainties at PHY and MAC layers, a pseudo-deterministic routing protocol that relies on average or historic statistics can hardly explore the full potentials of a multi-hop wireless mesh. We study optimal WMN routing using probing-based online anypath forwarding, with explicit consideration of transient link uncertainties. We show the underlying connection between WMN routing and the classic Canadian Traveller Problem (CTP) [1]. Inspired by a stochastic recoverable version of CTP (SRCTP), we develop a practical SRCTP-based online routing algorithm under link uncertainties. We study how dynamic next hop selection can be done with low cost, and derive a systematic selection order for minimizing transmission delay. We conduct simulation studies to verify the effectiveness of the SRCTP algorithms under diverse network configurations. In particular, compared to deterministic routing, reduction of end-to-end delay (51:15∼73:02%) and improvement on packet delivery ratio (99:76%) are observed.

In this paper we present a new data-structuring technique for parallel computational geometry on a hypercube multiprocessor. This technique, called hypercube cascading, is an efficient parallel implementation of fractional cascading for the hypercube multiprocessor. That is, it allows complex data structures with catalogs to be traversed efficiently in parallel by a large number of simultaneous queries. We show that for monotone graphs with n nodes, m multiple look-up queries with path length at most p (including catalog look-ups) can be executed independently, in parallel, in time O( p log N + t s ( N )) on a hypercube multiprocessor of size N = max n, itm . The term t s ( N ) denotes the time for sorting N elements on a hypercube of size N ; currently t s ( N ) = O(log N log log N ). Note that, the best known sequential time complexity for one multiple look-up query, as presented by Chazelle and Guibas, is O( p + log N ). Our solution allows an arbitrary number of search queries to access the same node and its catalog at the same time. We present two parallel computational geometry applications of this technique: multiple stabbing of a simple polygonal path and multiple slanted range search.

A distributed Multi-Agent System (MAS) is often appropriate in solving large-scale experimental problems. RePast is a well-known simulation toolkit for agent-based modeling. In order to extend the scalability of RePast, one way is to partition the model into a distributed simulation. Interfacing RePast with the High Level Architecture (HLA) is a way to build the distributed system. This has previously been achieved in the HLA-RePast system by using a traditional interfacing approach which is time-consuming in the development process. In this paper, a new approach to interfacing RePast with the HLA is introduced. It is a pioneering attempt to adopt a generic architecture for Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) simulation package interoperability to interface an agent-based simulation package with the HLA. A middleware called DSManager originally designed to support COTS simulation package interoperability, is proven to be able to support interoperability of RePast models in a fast and easy manner. The advantages and tradeoffs, and the performance of the new distributed RePast system are discussed and compared to the HLA-RePast system.

With the increasing popularity of virtual machine monitoring (VMM) technologies, performance variability among collocated virtual machines (VMs) can easily become a severe scalability issue. Particularly, it becomes a necessary for administrative team to control the performance degradation level in a shared environment when multiple I/O-intensive applications simultaneously request their I/O operations [1]. Nevertheless, adding several logical layers between the running applications and the physical storage system, as seen in contemporary virtualized storage devices, makes it considerably difficult to build a low overhead controlling mechanism for such systems (while each VM may running a separate operating system instance) [2]. In this paper, we propose a strategy based on control theory for managing the performance of several I/O requests, such as mean response times and read/write throughput in a consolidated environment where multiple virtual services can share access to a storage system. This scheme uses an approach for measuring the characterization of read/write performance attributes of each virtual services and also takes into account the run-time quality of service enforcement levels requested by them. This is formulated as an optimization problem where a reward function is defined to reduce the overall QoS violation incidents among all consolidated virtual services. Performance evaluation is carried out by comparing the proposed solution with the default embedded Linux controller across a range of emulated application workloads in scenarios with multiple consolidated virtual containers. The results confirm that the proposed solution can reduce the overall QoS violation incident rates in scenarios in which the platform operates at a significant traffic load comparing to the default policy in LXC engine. © 2019 IEEE.

Large-scale scientific applications present great challenges to computational scientists in terms of obtaining high performance and in managing large datasets. These applications (most of which are simulations) may employ multiple techniques and resources in a heterogeneously distributed environment. Effective working in such an environment is crucial for modern large-scale simulations. In this paper, we present an integrated Java graphical user interface (IJ-GUI) that provides a control platform for managing complex programs and their large datasets easily. As far as performance is concerned, we present and evaluate our initial implementation of two optimization schemes: data replication and data prediction. Data replication can take advantage of 'temporal locality' by caching the remote datasets on local disks;data prediction, on the other hand, provides prefetch hints based on the datasets' past activities that are kept in databases. We first introduce the data contiguity concept in such an environment that guides data prediction. The relationship between the two approaches is discussed. © 2000 IEEE.

computer science is a practical discipline. It is always a great challenge to evaluate students' computer practice using computer-aided means for large scale students. We always need to address problems such as suspected plagiarism and deviation of the overall difficulty factor. In this paper, a multi-dimensional assessment model is designed for CS courses based on the detailed practice processing data in an E-learning system. The model comprehensively evaluates the students' learning process and results in three aspects of correctness, originality, and quality detection. Besides, the teacher can easily participate in the assessment according to their needs. The correctness is an essential requirement, and the originality is based on the clustering results of students' behaviors after clone detection to curb homework plagiarism. SonarQube is used to detect code quality and put forward higher requirements for codes. Manual participation intelligence has improved the flexibility and applicability of the model to a certain extent. We applied this model on the EduCoder online education platform and carried out a comprehensive analysis of 485 students in the parallel Programming Principles and Practice Class of Huazhong University of science and Technology. Experiment results confirm the distinction, rationality, and fairness of the model in assessing student performance. It not only gives students a credible, comprehensive score in large-scale online practical programming courses but also gives teachers and students corresponding suggestions based on the evaluation results. Furthermore, the model can be extended to other online education platforms. © 2020 ACM.

This paper discusses the effect of processor failures on computation performed on two-dimensional VLSI processor arrays. Previously established properties of catastrophic fault patterns are used to study inherent limits to reconfigurability of these regular architectures. Bounds on number of faults the system can tolerate to provide guaranteed performance are derived. These results are the generalization of the results obtained in the case of one-dimensional processor arrays.< >
