MOOCs have attracted a large number of learners with different education background all over the world. Despite its increasing popularity, MOOCs still suffer from the problem of high drop-out rate. One important reason may be due to the difficulty in understanding learning demand and user interests. To helper users find the most suitable courses, personalized course recommendation technology has become a hot research topic in e-learning and data mining community. One of the keys to the success of personalized course recommendation is a good user modeling method. Previous works in course recommendation often focus on developing user modeling methodology which learns latent user interests from historic learning data. Recently, interactive course recommendation has become more and more popular. In this paradigm, recommender systems can directly query user interests through survey tables or questionnaires and thus the learned interests may be more accurate. In this paper, we study the user interest acquisition problem based on the interactive course recommendation framework (ICRF). Under this framework, we systematically discuss different settings on querying user interests. To reduce performance-cost score, we propose the ICRF user interest acquisition algorithm that combines representative sampling and interest propagation algorithm to acquire user interests in a cost-effective way. With extensive experiments on real-world MOOC course enrollment datasets, we empirically demonstrate that our selective acquisition strategy is very effective and it can reduce the performance-cost score by 30.25% compared to the traditional aggressive acquisition strategies. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The low-cost and availability of network of workstations have made them attractive solution for high performance computing. Striking progress of network technology is enabling high-performance global computing, with the utilization of cluster and grid technologies, in which computational and data resources in a local or wide area network are transparently employed to solve large-scale problems. In this paper, we present implementation and design rationale of Visuel* toolkit for performance measurement and analysis of parallel applications in cluster and grid environments. Most of performance visualization tools available today for high-performance platforms show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, server average load), and thus, being suitable for visualization of computing platform system activities. The Visuel toolkit is web-based interface designed to show performance, activities of all computing nodes of a cluster or grid computing platform involved in the execution of a parallel application, such as CPU load level and memory usage of each computing node. In addition, this toolkit is able to display comparative performance data visualizations generated from a number of executions of an application under investigation, analyzing the performance of different implementations. Evaluations using this toolkit show that it outperforms in easing the process of investigation and implementation of parallel applications, in effective way. © 2005 IEEE.

As Grid Computing is becoming a reality, there is a need for managing and monitoring the available resources worldwide, as well as the need for conveying these resources to the everyday user. This paper describes a resource broker with its main function as to match the available resources to the user’s needs. The use of the resource broker provides a uniform interface to access any of the available and appropriate resources using user’s credentials. The resource broker runs on top of the Globus Toolkit. Therefore, it provides security and current information about the available resources and serves as a link to the diverse systems available in the Grid. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The coupling of microwaves into apertures plays an important part in many electromagnetic physics and engineering fields. When the width of apertures is very small, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation of the coupling is very time-consuming. As a many-core architecture, the Intel's Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture owns 512-bit vector units and more than 200 threads. In this paper, we parallelize FDTD simulation of microwave pulse coupling into narrow slots on the Intel MIC architecture. In the implementation, the parallel programming model OpenMP is used to exploit thread parallelism while loop unrolling and SIMD intrinsic functions are utilized to accomplish vectorization. Compared with the serial version on Intel Xeon E5-2670 CPU, the implementation on the MIC coprocessor including 57 cores obtains a speedup of 11.57 times. The experiment results also demonstrate that the parallelization has good scalability in performance. Additionally, how binding relationship between OpenMP threads and hardware threads in MIC influences performance is also reported. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we present our Grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, we show that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the Grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, Grid roles can be categorized into three types. It is our goal, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To, fulfill our architecture, we first apply an existing parallel decision tree algorithm (the SPRINT algorithm) to the Grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract: Predicting pollutant leakage and diffusion processes is crucial for ensuring people’s safety. While the deep learning method offers high simulation efficiency and superior generalization, there is currently a lack of research on predicting pollutant leakage and diffusion flow field using deep learning. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further studies in this area. This paper introduces a two-level network method to model the flow characteristics of pollutant diffusion. The proposed method in this study demonstrates a significant enhancement in flow field prediction accuracy compared to traditional deep learning methods. Moreover, it improves computational efficiency by over 800 times compared to traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. Unlike conventional CFD methods that require grid expansion to calculate all operation conditions, the deep learning method is not confined by grid limitations. While deep learning methods may not entirely replace CFD methods, they can serve as a valuable supplementary tool, expanding the versatility of CFD methods. The findings of this research establish a robust foundation for incorporating deep learning methods in addressing pollutant leakage and diffusion challenges. In this paper, we present Visuel tool for performance measurement and analysis of MPI parallel program in cluster environments. Most of tools available today for cluster systems show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server average load, among others), being more suitable for system administrators who maintain such system. The Visuel tool is designed to show performance data of all computer nodes involved in the execution of MPZ parallel program, such as CPU load level and memory usage. Additionally, this tool is able to display comparative performance data charts of multiple executions of the application (instrumented with MPI interface) under development. © 2005 IEEE.

The computing power provided by high performance and low cost PC-based clusters and Grid computing platforms are attractive and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes. In parallel, discussions on how to obtain more computing power from these computing platforms become an interesting issue. The development of applications for these high-performance computing platforms is complicated for several reasons: The complexity of applications themselves, which combines aspects of supercomputing and distributed computing, and by the need to achieve higher performance. This paper describes the design rationale and implementation of a parallel programming web-based toolkit, to ease the parallel programming learning process, with the use of web-based interface. The toolkit has widely been used in MPI parallel programming courses (both in graduate and undergraduate levels) and industry trainings. © 2005 IEEE.
