For the next processor generation, many cores and parallel programming will provide high-throughput and high-performance processing. As a consequence, research works have studied on-chip interconnection architectures to identify alternatives capable of decreasing the communication latencies. The objective of this paper is to present the evaluation of three well-known architectures (bus, crossbar switch and a conventional network-on-chip) in order to propose a multi-cluster network-on-chip architecture for parallel processing. The results show that a NoC composed of programmable routers and crossbar switches to interconnect clusters of cores has a better performance than conventional NoCs.

This work presents an approach at integrating novel methodologies for teaching graduate level courses in the areas of high performance computing (HPC) and advanced signal processing algorithms (ASPA) for computer engineering and computer science and engineering curricula. The novel teaching methodology presented here in high performance computing centers on the use of innovative empirical methods, i.e., exploratory data analysis, experiment design, etc., for studying computer performance, whereas an operator signal algebra approach is considered a novel methodology for the studying of advanced signal processing algorithms. The work also discusses an on going concerted effort at utilizing common tools and IT resources in both courses to provide students a holistic learning experience.

parallel computing systems have been based on multicore CPUs and specialized coprocessors, like GPUs. Work-stealing is a scheduling technique that has been used to distribute and redistribute the workload among resources in an efficient way. This work aims to propose, implement and validate a scheduling approach based on work stealing in parallel systems with CPUs and GPUs simultaneously. Results show that our approach, called WORMS, presents competitive performance when compared to reference tool for multicore CPUs (Cilk). In hybrid scenario, WORMS with multicore+GPU outperforms WORMS and Cilk with multicore only and also the GPU reference tool (Thrust).

Two-dimensional high-resolution inviscid and viscous detonations were conducted in the supersonic combustible mixture with the open-source program AMROC. The results show that as the grid resolution increases, more small-scale vortices along the slip lines are generated in the inviscid detonation compared with the viscous one. The physical viscosity plays a major role in the whole diffusion effect, indicating that with the increasing of the grid resolution the viscous detonation can become convergent more easily. The diffusion effect brought by the physical viscosity can enhance the mixing of the unburned mixture with the combusted product, hence accelerating the consumption of the unburned reactant and the chemical heat release, and thus finally generating a stronger detonation than the inviscid one. The transverse wave of the viscous detonation can propagate faster, resulting in a lower periodic of the triple point oscillation than that of the inviscid one, mainly owing to the faster heat release resulting from the stronger diffusion effect. It is suggested that the strong diffusion effect involved in the viscous detonation can make a more significant impact on the suppression of the instability in the detonation front, thus eventually generating less triple points than the inviscid one, even with a larger overdrive degree. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. SAWSDL-iMatcher: A Customizable and Effective Semantic Web Service Matchmaker

As the number of publicly available services grows, discovering proper services becomes an important issue and has attracted amount of attempts. This paper presents a new customizable and effective matchmaker, called SAWSDL-iMatcher. It supports a matchmaking mechanism, named iXQuery, which extends XQuery with various similarity joins for SAWSDL service discovery. Using SAWSDL-iMatcher, users can flexibly customize their preferred matching strategies according to different application requirements. SAWSDL-iMatcher currently supports several matching strategies, including syntactic and semantic matching strategies as well as several statistical-model-based matching strategies which can effectively aggregate similarity values from matching on various types of service description information such as service name, description text, and semantic annotation. Besides, we propose a semantic matching strategy to measure the similarity among SAWSDL semantic annotations. These matching strategies have been evaluated in SAWSDL-iMatcher on SAWSDL-TC2 and Jena Geography Dataset (JGD). The evaluation shows that different matching strategies are suitable for different tasks and contexts, which implies the necessity of a customizable matchmaker. In addition, it also provides evidence for the claim that the effectiveness of SAWSDL service matching can be significantly improved by statistical-model-based matching strategies. Our matchmaker is competitive with other matchmakers on benchmark tests at S3 contest 2009. © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents reuse-aware modulo scheduling to maximizing stream reuse and improving concurrency for stream-level loops running on stream processors. The novelty lies in the development of a new representation for an unrolled and software-pipelined stream-level loop using a set of reuse equations, resulting in simultaneous optimization of two performance objectives for the loop, reuse and concurrency, in a unified framework. We have implemented this work in the compiler developed for our 64-bit FT64 stream processor. Our experimental results obtained on FT64 and by simulation using nine representative stream applications demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Pervasive and ubiquitous environments must handle the detection and management of users, devices and services, while guaranteeing the privacy of both the users and the environment itself. Current techniques for handling privacy found in the literature treating the subject in various ways, while concentrating on the device management, communication protocols, user profiles and environmental access. This paper examines a control model for privacy in pervasive environments from the perspective of the environment. A prototype was devised and tested to validate the generic model of privacy which was also used to compare taxonomic concepts in the literature. Moreover, the prototype was devised and tested to validate the generic model of privacy for control and manage various users, devices and environments and so on. The prototype was based on Percontrol (a system for pervasive user management), which was only intended to identify users using Wi-Fi, and now it is capable of managing temperature, luminosity and other preferences, measured by a WSN (wireless sensor network) embedded to Percontrol, and the data treatment is done by an ANN (artificial neural network). Results confirmed the viability of device detection with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and RFID (radio frequency identification) for an increases slight of the latency in registering new devices on the system.

In speech production research, different imaging modalities have been employed to obtain accurate information about the movement and shaping of the vocal tract. Ultrasound is an affordable and non-invasive imaging modality with relatively high temporal and spatial resolution to study the dynamic behavior of tongue during speech production. However, a longstanding problem for ultrasound tongue imaging is the transducer misalignment during longer data recording sessions. In this paper, we propose a simple, yet effective, misalignment quantification approach. The analysis employs MSE distance and two similarity measurement metrics to identify the relative displacement between the chin and the transducer. We visualize these measures as a function of the timestamp of the utterances. Extensive experiments are conducted on a Hungarian and Scottish English child dataset. The results suggest that large values of Mean Square Error (MSE) and small values of Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Complex Wavelet SSIM indicate corruptions or issues during the data recordings, which can either be caused by transducer misalignment or lack of gel. This paper presents performance and area evaluation of a homogeneous multiprocessor communication system based on network-on-chip (NoC) in FPGA platforms. Two homogenous chip multiprocessor proposals were designed and compared for Xilinx FPGAs using MicroBlaze processors: one based on NoC and the other based on shared memory/bus. One of the main findings is the communication performance evaluation of NoC for parallel computing applications. The comparison results show that an efficient implementation of NoC on FPGA can improve communication speed by up to seven times with low area overhead, according to the data size and the number of processors connected to the network.

Convolutional neural network-based age estimation using B-mode ultrasound tongue image

Ultrasound tongue imaging is widely used for speech production research, and it has attracted increasing attention as its potential applications seem to be evident in many different fields, such as the visual biofeedback tool for second language acquisition and silent speech interface. Unlike previous studies, here we explore the feasibility of age estimation using the ultrasound tongue image of the speakers. Motivated by the success of deep learning, this paper leverages deep learning on this task. We train a deep convolutional neural network model on the UltraSuite dataset. The deep model achieves mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.03 for the data from typically developing children, while MAE is 4.87 for the data from the children with speech sound disorders, which suggest that age estimation using ultrasound is more challenging for the children with speech sound disorder. The developed method can be used a tool to evaluate the performance of speech therapy sessions. It is also worthwhile to notice that, although we leverage the ultrasound tongue imaging for our study, the proposed methods may also be extended to other imaging modalities (e.g. MRI) to assist the studies on speech production. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.
