In this paper we examine the use of a matrix factorization technique called singular value decomposition (SVD) in item-based collaborative filtering. After a brief introduction to SVD and some of its previous applications in recommender systems, we proceed with a full description of our algorithm, which uses SVD in order to reduce the dimension of the active item's neighborhood. The experimental part of this work first locates the ideal parameter settings for the algorithm, and concludes by contrasting it with plain item-based filtering which utilizes the original, high dimensional neighborhood. The results show that a reduction in the dimension of the item neighborhood is promising, since it does not only tackle some of the recorded problems of recommender systems, but also assists in increasing the accuracy of systems employing it.

The low-cost and availability of network of workstations have made them attractive solution for high performance computing. Striking progress of network technology is enabling high-performance global computing, with the utilization of cluster and grid technologies, in which computational and data resources in a local or wide area network are transparently employed to solve large-scale problems. In this paper, we present implementation and design rationale of Visuel* toolkit for performance measurement and analysis of parallel applications in cluster and grid environments. Most of performance visualization tools available today for high-performance platforms show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, server average load), and thus, being suitable for visualization of computing platform system activities. The Visuel toolkit is web-based interface designed to show performance, activities of all computing nodes of a cluster or grid computing platform involved in the execution of a parallel application, such as CPU load level and memory usage of each computing node. In addition, this toolkit is able to display comparative performance data visualizations generated from a number of executions of an application under investigation, analyzing the performance of different implementations. Evaluations using this toolkit show that it outperforms in easing the process of investigation and implementation of parallel applications, in effective way. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we present our Grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, we show that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the Grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, Grid roles can be categorized into three types. It is our goal, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To, fulfill our architecture, we first apply an existing parallel decision tree algorithm (the SPRINT algorithm) to the Grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance. © 2005 IEEE.

Internet computing and grid technologies promise to change the way we tackle complex problems. They will enable large-scale aggregation and sharing of computational, data and other resources across institutional boundaries. As Grid Computing is becoming a reality, there is a need for managing and monitoring the available resources worldwide, ax well as the need for conveying these resources to the everyday user. This paper describes a resource broker with its main function as to match the available resources to the user's needs. The use of the resource broker provides a uniform interface to access any of the available and appropriate resources using user's credentials. The resource broker runs on top of the Globus Toolkit. Therefore, it provides security and current information about the available resources and serves as a link to the diverse systems available in the Grid. © 2005 IEEE.

SLABS is a formal specification language designed for modular and composable specification of multi-agent systems. This paper reports our attempts to support SLABS at the level of programming languages. A programming language, SLABSp, is presented to support two distinguished mechanisms, namely caste and scenario, in caste-centric methodology of agent-oriented software development. Based on Java platform, the SLABSp has been implemented by compiling the programs into Java with the multi-agent runtime environment.

The paper presents a caste-centric approach to agent-oriented programming by introducing SLABSp language. The fundamental concepts of caste-centric methodology, caste and scenario, as well as environment descriptions, are available as language facilities in SLABSp in a coherent way. In SLABSp programming, agents are organized into castes to represent their structure and behavior characteristics, and their behaviors are defined by scenarios and rules in the context of their environment. The relations between agents and castes are bound at runtime, and the perceptions and interactions between agents are supported with scenarios and behavior rules. Two selected SLABSp programs are demonstrated to illustrate the programming style.

The low cost and wide availability of PC-based clusters have made them an excellent alternative to access supercomputing. However, while network of workstations may be readily available, there is an increasing need for performance tools that support these platforms, in order to achieve even higher performance. One of possible ways to increase performance is parallel program restructuring. It is introduced in this paper a toolkit to generate graphical charts for visualization of MPI parallel programs, reflecting to its execution over time, with the use of DP*Graph representation, parallel version of timing graph. In other words, parallel programs are shown through charts its sequential codes, dependencies and communication structures in a particular cluster system platform. Still in thispaper, it is discussed the implementation of this toolkit and present some experimental results obtained. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we present Visuel tool for performance measurement and analysis of MPI parallel program in cluster environments. Most of tools available today for cluster systems show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server average load, among others), being more suitable for system administrators who maintain such system. The Visuel tool is designed to show performance data of all computer nodes involved in the execution of MPZ parallel program, such as CPU load level and memory usage. Additionally, this tool is able to display comparative performance data charts of multiple executions of the application (instrumented with MPI interface) under development. © 2005 IEEE.

The computing power provided by high performance and low cost PC-based clusters and Grid computing platforms are attractive and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes. In parallel, discussions on how to obtain more computing power from these computing platforms become an interesting issue. The development of applications for these high-performance computing platforms is complicated for several reasons: The complexity of applications themselves, which combines aspects of supercomputing and distributed computing, and by the need to achieve higher performance. This paper describes the design rationale and implementation of a parallel programming web-based toolkit, to ease the parallel programming learning process, with the use of web-based interface. The toolkit has widely been used in MPI parallel programming courses (both in graduate and undergraduate levels) and industry trainings. © 2005 IEEE.
