Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are generally considered to be free havens for pirated content, in particular with respect to music. We describe a solution for the problem of copyright infringement in P2P networks for music sharing. In particular, we propose a P2P protocol that integrates the functions of identification, tracking, and sharing of music with those of licensing, monitoring, and payment. This highly decentralized music-aware P2P protocol will allow access to large amounts of music of guaranteed quality;it merges in a natural way the policing functions for copyright protection·and an efficient music-management infrastructure for the benefit of the user. © 2004 IEEE.

We discuss a rigorous unifying framework for both planning and replanning, extending an existing logic-based approach to resource-based planning. The primitive concepts in this Action Resource Framework (ARF) are actions and resources. Actions consume and produce resources. Plans are structures composed of actions, resource facts and an explicit dependency function specifying their interrelationships. In this framework, both planning and replanning are conceived as plan transformation processes accomplished by applying sequences of operations on plans. For this, we introduce operators for plan transformation and define the concept of a plan library. Using a refinement planning template, we show how some existing (re)planning methods and heuristics can be described as special cases of this framework. The advantage of the framework is that it offers a unifying view on planning and replanning. © 2003 IEEE.

In systems consistingof multiple clusters of processors interconnected by relatively slow connections such as our distributed ASCI1 Supercomputer (DAS), jobs may request co-allocation, i.e., the simultaneous allocation of processors in different clusters. The performance of co-allocation may be severely impacted by the slowintercluster connections, and by the types of job *** distinguish different job request types ranging from ordered requests that specify the numbers of processors needed in each of the clusters, to flexible requests that only specify a total. We simulate multicluster systems with the FCFS policy— and with two policies for placinga flexible request, one tries to balance cluster loads and one tries to fill clusters completely—to determine the response times under workloads consistingof a single or of different request types for different communication speeds across the intercluster connections. In addition to a synthetic workload, we also consider a workload derived from measurements of a real application on the *** find that the communication speed difference has a severe impact on response times, that a relatively small amount of capacity is lost due to communication, and that for a mix of request types, the performance is determined not only by the separate behaviours of the different types of requests, but also by the way in which they interact. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Over the last decade, much research in the area of scheduling has concentrated on single cluster systems. Less attention has been paid to multicluster systems, although they are gaining more and more importance in practice. We propose a model for scheduling rigid jobs consisting of multiple components in multicluster systems by pure space sharing, based on the distributed ASCI Supercomputer. Using simulations, we asses the influence of the structure and sizes of the jobs on the system’s performance, measured in terms of the average response time and the maximum utilization. We consider three types of requests, total requests, unordered requests and ordered requests, and compare their effect on the system’s performance for two scheduling policies, First Come First Served, and Fit Processors First Served, which allows the scheduler to look further in the queue for jobs that fit. These types of job requests are differentiated by the restrictions they impose on the scheduler and by the form of co-allocation used. The results show that the performance improves with decreasing average job size and when fewer restrictions are imposed on the scheduler. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

A heterogeneous environment for hardware/software cosimulation is described. This environment permits a portion of an application's subsystems to be simulated using reconfigurable hardware while the remainder of the subsystems are simulated using software. An Aptix FPCB populated with Xilinx FPGAs serves as the hardware simulation platform while an IBM-compatible PC serves as the software simulation platform. The two platforms are connected using an Altera reconfigurable logic board which allows the development of a high-speed interface for communication. This paper focuses on the difficulties associated with designing and interfacing simulation entities in this heterogeneous environment. Strategies for designing hardware and software simulation entities are introduced. These strategies reduce the impact of size and performance constraints imposed by the cosimulation environment while addressing the issues of time management and synchronization. A simple queueing application is used to illustrate a design methodology which incorporates these design strategies.

Efficiency has always been one of the problems of high-level languages like Prolog. Different solutions have been suggested to speed up the execution of Prolog. One alternative is to build dedicated hardware. Another alternative, using advanced compilation techniques through global analysis, has been taken recently with spectacular results. A third alternative consists of combining hardware and software solutions. This paper discusses the relative merits and shortcomings of the three approaches in the light of the experiince gained at ECRC in the KCM (Knowledge Crunching Machine) project, the ultimate question being: “Has dedicated hardware for Prolog a future?”. © 1991, Springer Verlag. Most previous parallel logic programming systems have been built on top of classical operating systems. The advances in the area of parallel operating systems have made it possible to explore new execution models that take advantage of their features. In this paper we propose a family of execution models (VM,VMBA,VMHW) that make use of the new virtual memory technologies such as copy-on-write, memory inheritance, and distributed shared memory.
