This work presents a study undertaken to characterise the FINISTERRAE supercomputer, one of the biggest NUMA systems in Europe. The main objective was to determine the performance effect of bus contention and cache coherency as well as the suitability of porting strategies regarding irregular codes in such a complex architecture. Results show that: (1) cores which share a socket can be considered as independent processors in this context; (2) for big data sizes, the effect of sharing a bus degrades the final performance but masks the cache coherency effects; (3) the NUMA factor (remote to local memory latency ratio) is an important factor on irregular codes and (4) the default kernel allocation policy is not optimal in this system. These results allow us to understand the behaviour of thread-to-core mappings and memory allocation policies.

The systematic conception of decentralized and self-adaptive software systems, as demanded for the run-time management of today’s distributed, multi-tier software architectures, is an active research area. Here, we discuss a coordination architecture that facilitates the enactment of externalized coordination models in Multi-agent systems (MAS). Coordination is configured by systemic models, i.e. structures of agent-behaviour interdependencies that denote the mutual influences of agent activities. The systematic, iterative application development is supported by a non-intrusive integration approach that enables developers to adjust application dynamics by complementing agent-based applications with systemic coordination models.

There have been some efforts to apply agent based approaches in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for different applica- tion scenarios in recent past. These efforts have met with varying levels of success so far. However, the efforts to assess the suitability of Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) compliant multiagent solutions for WSNs are almost non-existent. In this paper we present a scenario from an industrial domain and asses the suitability of a FIPA compli- ant multiagent based solution for it. The scenario is based on a WSN deployment in an underground mine where it could be put to use for several purposes like hazardous gas plume detection and tracking, mine lighting control, Proximate En- vironment Monitoring (PEM), structural health monitoring of mine structure, to name a few. Determine the appropriate loop transformations is an essential process in the automatic parallelization field. The sequence of loop transformation to be applied also must be considered. Selection of loop transformations faces many challenges, it is needed an experienced. In this paper, An Intelligent Loop Transformation Selector (ILTS);as a part of parallelizing tool project, was developed to overcome on these challenges and imitate an experienced. A Kohonen's Self-Organizing Map (SOM) neural network is used to select the appropriate loop transformation or sequence of them. Neural Networks offer intelligent transformations selection to reduce or eliminate the dependencies and maximize the parallelization in the sequential code. The experimental results show that ILTS chooses loop transformations successfully in most cases. This tool can be integrated with any parallelizing compiler to enhance loop transformation selection process.

Classification turns chaotic knowledge into regularity by systematizing a domain and providing a common vocabulary. Currently there is a lack of systematic and comprehensive studies in organization and classification of Grid faults. We address this gap with a multi-perspective Grid fault taxonomy describing an incident using eight different characteristics. It is hard to define a taxonomy of broad validity and acceptance that satisfies the vast number of requirements of the many Grid user communities. Nevertheless we proof that our taxonomy can serve as a solid basis for defining project-specific custom classification schemes by giving a concrete example created for a state-of-the-art Grid middleware environment.

Pedestrian safety is a major concern in road transportation as pedestrian/vehicle accidents account for the second largest cause of traffic-related injuries and fatalities worldwide. Considerable work has examined the use of lidar, radar and computer vision for pedestrian detection but existing solutions are costly and work only if pedestrians are in the vehicle's line-of-sight. In this paper, we present a novel technique based on wireless sensor networks that is cheap and enables pedestrian detection beyond the driver's horizon. The detection system is based on the use of "cat's eyes" augmented with embedded processing and communication capabilities that are able to detect pedestrians and forward this information along the road. We describe how such a system was successfully built with SOL, a high-level programming language for wireless sensor networks. Initial results show that the system obtains detection rates of 100%, false positive rates of 0%, and that the precision of the estimated position of pedestrians depends on their heading and relative position to sensor nodes.

Dynamically reconfigurable hardware offers promising possibilities for flexible, computation intensive applications. With the technological advance of reconfigurable hardware came a rapid growth in the number of resources per chip requiring large amounts of data transfer per reconfiguration. Especially run-time reconfigurable applications, which make frequent use of reconfiguration, suffer from the growing overhead induced thereby. In this project, we investigate novel concepts for reconfigurable architectures that can dynamically reconfigure the actual reconfiguration potential to reduce the total amount of reconfiguration data that is necessary for a computation.
