distributed Complex Event Processing (DCEP) is a paradigm to infer the occurrence of complex situations in the surrounding world from basic events like sensor readings. In doing so, DCEP operators detect event patterns on their incoming event streams. To yield high operator throughput, data parallelization frameworks divide the incoming event streams of an operator into overlapping windows that are processed in parallel by a number of operator instances. In doing so, the basic assumption is that the different windows can be processed independently from each other. However, consumption policies enforce that events can only be part of one pattern instance;then, they are consumed, i.e., removed from further pattern detection. That implies that the constituent events of a pattern instance detected in one window are excluded from all other windows as well, which breaks the data parallelism between different windows. In this paper, we tackle this problem by means of speculation: Based on the likelihood of an event's consumption in a window, subsequent windows may speculatively suppress that event. We propose the SPECTRE framework for speculative processing of multiple dependent windows in parallel. Our evaluations show an up to linear scalability of SPECTRE with the number of CPU cores. The main focuses of the 2nd International Middleware Doctoral Symposium took place at Middleware 2005 are discussed. The symposium is a forum for an invited group of doctoral students and it provides an opportunity for them to obtain guidance from mentors and to meet with their peers. The event is aimed to give students constructive criticism before their thesis defense and foster discussions related to future career opportunities. The symposium attracted many high-quality submissions, ensuring a competitive selection process.

Healthcare professionals working in highly dynamic hospital environments typically have correspondingly dynamic schedules that are difficult to manage. Emergent tasks and shifting priorities result in existing schedules becoming obsolete. Pervasive computing technology can aid Healthcare professionals in organising daily activities by exploiting knowledge of planned and emerging tasks, of patients and colleagues, and of the general state of the working environment. The Hermes software framework at Trinity College Dublin supports the development of mobile applications for human activity management that exploits such environmental knowledge. Supported applications are based on the concept of a trail. This paper describes the Hermes framework and illustrates how it can be used to implement applications that can automatically reorganise the schedules of healthcare workers based on sensed changes in their environment

Modern society is heavily dependent on wireless networks for providing voice and data communications. Wireless data broadcast has recently emerged as an attractive way to disseminate dynamic data to a large number of clients. In data broadcast systems, the server proactively transmits the information on a downlink channel; the clients access the data by listening to the channel. Wireless data broadcast systems can serve a large number of heterogeneous clients, minimizing power consumption as well as protecting the privacy of the clients' locations. The availability and relatively low cost of antennas resulted in a number of potential threats to the integrity of the wireless infrastructure. In particular, the data broadcast systems are vulnerable to jamming, i.e., the use of active signals to prevent data broadcast. The goal of jammers is to cause disruption, resulting in long waiting times and excessive power consumption. In this paper we investigate efficient schedules for wireless data broadcast that perform well in the presence of a jammer. We show that the waiting time of client can be reduced by adding redundancy to the schedule and establish upper and lower bounds on the achievable minimum waiting time under different requirements on the staleness of the transmitted data

Today cloud security and privacy concerns pose significant challenges. One particular challenge consists in how to take into consideration the user's security policies while accessing the outsourced data. In fact, for a given application, we may have a set of rules, as high level security policy, which needs to hold prior to any query execution. Therefore, the main problem that we tackle in this ongoing project is how to enforce this high level security policy in the cloud storage layer without conflicts. To address this challenges, we propose a middleware denoted curlX which consists of two main processes: the security policy enforcement process and the verification process.

In order to generate local addresses for an array section A(l:h:s) with block-cyclic distribution, an efficient compiling method is required. In this paper, two local address generation methods for the block-cyclic distribution are presented. One is a simple local address generation method that is modified from the virtual-block scheme. The other is a linear-time /spl Delta/M table construction method. The array elements of A(l:h:s) to be accessed at run-time build up a family of lines. By using the equation of the lines, a /spl Delta/M table can be generated in O(k) time. Experimental results show that a simple local address generation method has poor performance but a linear-time /spl Delta/M table generation method is faster than other algorithms in /spl Delta/M table generation time and access time for 10,000 array elements.

Flexibility in software systems is needed to allow adaption to increasing demands of users. To ease the development of flexible architectures several approaches are used, which often differ already on the conceptual grounds. Two of these paradigms are characterized by the strong underlying metaphors plugins and agents. Plugins emphasize on an extension relation between pairs of components where each component participates in a clearly specified role. Agents have a wide variety of attributes, such as mobility, autonomy, adaptability and pro-activeness. The general relationship of agents is that of peers mutually offering and using their services - higher organizational abstractions have to be implemented based on this service-oriented view. This paper proposes to conjoin both paradigms of multi-agent systems and plugin systems, leading to the concept of a plugin-agent. First, we discuss characteristics of both concepts. The discussion clearly shows that agents and extensible components have structural similarities. This follows the combination of both concepts into the new concept of the plugin-agent. The approach presented in this paper is unique as it handles both concepts on the same architectural level - to our knowledge, all other existing combinations of agents and plugins use one of the concepts to model or implement the other.

Modern genotyping technologies are able to obtain up to a few million genetic markers (such as SNPs) of an individual within a few minutes of time. Detecting epistasis, such as SNP-SNP interactions, in Genome-Wide Association Studies is an important but time-consuming operation since statistical computations have to be performed for each pair of measured markers. Therefore, a variety of HPC architectures have been used to accelerate these studies. In this work we present a parallel approach for multi-core clusters, which is implemented with UPC++ and takes advantage of the features available in the Partitioned Global Address Space and Object Oriented Programming models. Our solution is based on a well-known regression model (used by the popular BOOST tool) to test SNP-pairs interactions. Experimental results show that UPC++ is suitable for parallelizing data-intensive bioinformatics applications on clusters. For instance, it reduces the time to analyze a real-world dataset with more than 500,000 SNPs and 5,000 individuals from several days when using a single core to less than one minute using 512 nodes (12,288 cores) of a Cray XC30 supercomputer.

Connectors are used to realize component interactions in component systems. Apart from their primary function, which is mediating the communication, their implementation can also support additional features that, while unrelated to the primary function, may benefit from their placement in connectors. Such features are often optional in the sense that they can be activated and deactivated at run-time. The problem is that even if they are disabled, their very presence in the connector incurs certain overhead. In this paper, we describe an approach to eliminate this overhead by reconfiguration of the connector implementation. Besides connectors, the approach is applicable to similar technologies such as reflective middleware and other architecture-based component systems and frameworks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
