Kubernetes provides several functions that can help service providers to deal with the management of complex container-based applications. However, most of these functions need a time-consuming and costly customization process to address service-specific requirements. The adoption of Digital Twin (DT) solutions can ease the configuration process by enabling the evaluation of multiple configurations and custom policies by means of simulation-based what-if scenario analysis. To facilitate this process, this paper proposes KubeTwin, a framework to enable the definition and evaluation of DTs of Kubernetes applications. Specifically, this work presents an innovative simulation-based inference approach to define accurate DT models for a Kubernetes environment. We experimentally validate the proposed solution by implementing a DT model of an image recognition application that we tested under different conditions to verify the accuracy of the DT model. The soundness of these results demonstrates the validity of the KubeTwin approach and calls for further investigation.

In this paper, novel methods for performing condition monitoring for power station turbine shafts are presented. The objective of this work is to investigate methods for producing accurate turbine vibration fault alarms during turbine shaft rundowns. Wavelet packet analysis is employed to extract spectral features from healthy vibration signals and the probability density functions of these features are estimated. Both Gaussian models, using Bayesian inferencing, and mixture models are employed. Preliminary results show that the more computationally expensive mixture models produce more accurate density estimates and hence more reliable fault alarms.

Ecosystem functioning, climate change, and multiple interactions among biogeochemical cycles, climate system, site conditions and land use options are leading-edge topics in recent environmental modelling. Terrestrial ecosystem models are widely used to support carbon sequestration and ecosystem studies under various ecological circumstances. Our team uses the Biome-BGC model (Numerical Terradynamic Simulation group, University of Montana), and develops an improved model version of it, called Biome-BGC MuSo. Both the original and the improved model estimate the ecosystem scale storage and fluxes of energy, carbon, nitrogen and water, controlled by various physical and biological processes on a daily time-scale. Web services were also developed and integrated with parallel processing desktop grid technology. Taverna workflow management system was used to build up and carry out elaborated workflows like seamless data flow to model simulation, Monte Carlo experiment, model sensitivity analysis, model-data fusion, estimation of ecosystem service indicators or extensive spatial modelling. Straightforward management of complex data analysis tasks, organized into appropriately documented, shared and reusable scientific workflows enables researchers to carry out detailed and scientifically challenging 'in silico' experiments and applications that could open new directions in ecosystem research and in a broader sense it supports progress in environmental modelling. The workflow approach built upon these web services allows even the most complicated computations to be initiated without the need of programming skills and deep understanding of model structure and initialization. The developments enable a wider array of scientists to perform ecosystem scale simulations, and to perform analyses not previously possible due to high complexity and computational demand.

A blockchain-based trust management framework with verifiable interactions

There has been tremendous interest in the development of formal trust models and metrics through the use of analytics (e.g., Belief Theory and Bayesian models), logics (e.g., Epistemic and Subjective Logic) and other mathematical models. The choice of trust metric will depend on context, circumstance and user requirements and there is no single best metric for use in all circumstances. Where different users require different trust metrics to be employed the trust score calculations should still be based on all available trust evidence. Trust is normally computed using past experiences but, in practice (especially in centralised systems), the validity and accuracy of these experiences are taken for granted. In this paper, we provide a formal framework and practical blockchain-based implementation that allows independent trust providers to implement different trust metrics in a distributed manner while still allowing all trust providers to base their calculations on a common set of trust evidence. Further, our design allows experiences to be provably linked to interactions without the need for a central authority. This leads to the notion of evidence-based trust with provable interactions. Leveraging blockchain allows the trust providers to offer their services in a competitive manner, charging fees while users are provided with payments for recording experiences. The number of traffic participants has increased exponentially over the past century, making a traffic accident the most likely cause of death for children and young adults today. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication is regarded as one of the most promising emerging technologies to enhance road safety. It allows traffic participants to exchange relevant information to increase their environmental perception. Cooperative Awareness, a V2X service that is already being deployed in Europe, enables road users to share their dynamic states. Collective Perception (CP), currently in the final stage of standardization in the different regions of the world, enables the exchange of sensor-detected objects. The latter is thus not only relevant for connected vehicles but can further be used by sensor-equipped infrastructure to support vehicular perception, opening a whole new range of possibilities. The objective of this work is to investigate mechanisms to account for the special role of Infrastructure-assisted Collective Perception (ICP). Packet duplication is introduced for ICP to enhance the communication reliability. Additionally, different message generation rules prioritizing ICP are proposed and compared based on the enabled environmental perception. Simulations show significant improvements of the average precision, reaching an average increase of about 60% for ICP in comparison to V2V -based CP in scenarios with low connected vehicle densities.

Current cloud computing frameworks host millions of physical servers that utilize cloud computing resources in the form of different virtual machines. Cloud Data Center (CDC) infrastructures require significant amounts of energy to deliver large scale computational services. Moreover, computing nodes generate large volumes of heat, requiring cooling units in turn to eliminate the effect of this heat. Thus, overall energy consumption of the CDC increases tremendously for servers as well as for cooling units. However, current workload allocation policies do not take into account effect on temperature and it is challenging to simulate the thermal behaviour of CDCs. There is a need for a thermal-aware framework to simulate and model the behaviour of nodes and measure the important performance parameters which can be affected by its temperature. In this paper, we propose a lightweight framework, ThermoSim, for modelling and simulation of thermal-aware resource management for cloud computing environments. This work presents a Recurrent Neural Network based deep learning temperature predictor for CDCs which is utilized by ThermoSim for lightweight resource management in constrained cloud environments. ThermoSim extends the CloudSim toolkit helping to analyse the performance of various key parameters such as energy consumption, service level agreement violation rate, number of virtual machine migrations and temperature during the management of cloud resources for execution of workloads. Further, different energy-aware and thermal-aware resource management techniques are tested using the proposed ThermoSim framework in order to validate it against the existing framework (Thas). The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework is capable of modelling and simulating the thermal behaviour of a CDC and ThermoSim framework is better than Thas in terms of energy consumption, cost, time, memory usage and prediction accuracy. This paper describes an architecture for real-time environmental modeling. It consists of a wireless mesh network equipped with sensors and a cloud-based infrastructure to perform real-time environmental simulations using a physics-based model combined with an Ensemble Kalman Filter. The purpose of the system is to optimize groundwater abstraction close to a river. These initial studies demonstrate that the cloud infrastructure can simultaneously compute a large number of simulations, thus allowing for the implementation of Ensemble Kalman Filters in real-time.
