Network communication has been proven to be a very important tool and a key factor in the recent development and progress of the power grid operation. It is also considered as the foundation for the smart grid because information and communication are integrated into electricity distribution to achieve reliable and accurate knowledge of the power grid. In previous years, absorbing energy from substations and delivering it to customers was the only type of interaction we knew between utility companies and customers. Presently, the growing connections of small distributed generation units caused by the cost reduction of most of the technologies used in the generation and storage of electrical energy, along with the potential benefits of renewable energy have pushed many researchers to look into the improvement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to ensure a bidirectional flow of power and data. Moreover, the evolution of information and communication technologies and its applications to smart grid have converted the smart grid into a cyber-physical system where vulnerabilities and additional security challenges such as cyber-threats and cyber-attacks have emerged. Previously, we have demonstrated that using machine learning-based processing on data gathered from communication networks and the power grid was a promising solution for detecting cyber threats by implementing a co-simulation of cyber-security for cross-layer strategy. Since the majority of the challenges observed can only be solved in the network communication layer, we present in this work a physics-based state estimation model of the communication network system towards enhanced cyber-physical security of the smart grid. Information integration with the previously developed machine learning model is developed, providing an enhanced cyber-physical security application for the smart grid. The dynamic nature of microgrids introduces challenges in the context of frequency stability. This work presents a framework where the future state of microgrid frequency is predicted and corrective actions are optimized. Predictions are generated through Bayesian filters leveraging synchronized data acquired via PMUs. Taking a proactive approach makes it possible to optimize corrective actions considering dynamic system conditions. Testing is conducted via Matlab simulations. The performance of the solution presented in this work is compared to traditional load-shedding schemes and to predictive solutions found in literature. The results indicate that the proposed framework outperforms both. Some of the advantages of this framework include a reduction in amount of load dropped during compensation, the use of adaptive parameters which eliminates the need to simulate contingency conditions, and dynamic uncertainty quantification provided the particle filter.

The replacement of conventional generating units with non-conventional renewable energy resources impacts the reliability of power systems. With high integration of renewable-based generation resources, there is a reduction in total system inertia, which could lead to systems with less time to react for frequency restoration in case of unexpected unit failures. Though several power system testbeds are available for studying and analysing different stability phenomena, none are suitable for characterizing, or analyzing low-inertia conditions. In this paper, a power system simulation environment is introduced for investigating control architectures for power grids, with special attention to the impact of high penetration of inverter-based generation resources (IBRs). The testbed is applied to the WSCC 9- bus test system, modified so that a range of IBR penetration levels can be analyzed (from zero to 80%). The testbed is suitable for studying both fast and slow electromechanical phenomena. A conclusion from numerical experiments is that high levels of IBRs do not necessarily result in low-inertia. This is due in part to the layers of control in the grid already in place to avoid frequency excursions.

In low-inertia power grids, traditional load-shedding methods can be ineffective, causing instability and unnecessary grid islanding. This work introduces a distributed tri-level optimization model for proactive load shedding to prevent grid islanding considering generator coherency identification. Preventing islanding is crucial because it reduces the need for additional load shedding and transmission line tripping, thereby maintaining frequency stability. This is especially important in systems heavily dependent on non-dispatchable resources like wind and solar. The model employs generator coherency identification through spectral clustering using synchronizing coefficients. The results are then used as constraints in a dynamic graph based on power flow measurements to identify coherent areas for load shedding under highly stressed conditions. This approach offers practical applications and holds promise for real-world use.

The popularity of asynchronous data exchange patterns has recently increased, as evidenced by 23% of the communication between microservices in an Alibaba trace analysis. Such workloads necessitate methods for reducing dataflow processing and completion time by forecasting the future requirements of their microservices and (re-)scheduling them. Therefore, we investigate a prediction-based scheduling method of asynchronous dataflow processing applications by considering the stochastic changes due to dynamic user requirements. We present a microservice scaling and scheduling method named PreMatch combining a machine learning (ML) prediction strategy based on gradient boosting with ranking and game theory matching scheduling principles. Firstly, PreMatch predicts the number of microservice replicas, and then, the ranking method orders the microservice replicas and devices based on microservice and transmission times. Thereafter, the PreMatch schedules microservice replicas requiring dataflow processing on computing devices. Experimental analysis of the PreMatch method shows lower completion times on average 13% compared to a related prediction-based scheduling method.

An important challenge for smart grid security is designing a secure and robust smart grid communications architecture to protect against cyber-threats, such as Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, that can adversely impact the operation of the power grid. Researchers have proposed using Software Defined Network frameworks to enhance cybersecurity of the smart grid, but there is a lack of benchmarking and comparative analyses among the many techniques. In this work, a distributed three-controller software-defined networking (D3-SDN) architecture, benchmarking and comparative analysis with other techniques is presented. The selected distributed flat SDN architecture divides the network horizontally into multiple areas or clusters, where each cluster is handled by a single Open Network Operating System (ONOS) controller. A case study using the IEEE 118-bus system is provided to compare the performance of the presented ONOS-managed D3-SDN, against the POX controller. In addition, the proposed architecture outperforms a single SDN controller framework by a tenfold increase in throughput;a reduction in latency of > 20%;and an increase in throughput of approximately 11% during the DoS attack scenarios. Massive volumes of high-frequency and high-volume data are constantly being generated by the vast amount of available tracking sensors of moving objects. This phenomenon can be strongly observed in the maritime domain since most of the vessels transmit their location periodically. Automated methodologies able to extract meaningful information from vessel data is of utmost importance since it can reveal abnormal or illegal vessel activities in due time. Supervised deep learning approaches such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) require a large-scale annotated image dataset. Thus, semi-and unsupervised feature learning algorithms which learn image features from unlabelled data are able to mitigate this problem. To this end, in this work we propose a semi-supervised convolutional autoencoder (CAE) model for trajectory classification which is able to provide high-precision classification of mobility patterns. Experimental results demonstrated that the vessel activity classification performance can reach an F1-score of over 94%. © 2021 ACM.

For large-scale interconnected power systems that cover large geographical areas, certain electrical studies are required so that appropriate decisions ensure system reliability and low cost. For such studies, it is often neither practical nor necessary to model in detail the entire power system, which is increasingly complex due to a more diverse range of grid assets to choose from in both short and long-term planning. The goal of this paper is to present a methodology to reduce the order of large-scale power networks based on spectral graph theory given that current methods for static network reduction are not scalable. A brief analysis of some spectral clustering properties to determine which graph Laplacian matrix should be used and why is included. The analysis shows that the utilization of the normalized graph Laplacian is more advantageous for clustering purposes. Techniques are proposed to approximate cost functions for the aggregated generators. This is done via linear regression. The reduced-order model obtained with the proposed methodology has an accuracy above 94% and solves the scalability issue commonly present in other reduction methods. If the utilization of the reduced-order model is either constrained to load levels above mid-peak demand, or cost functions of aggregated units are approximated via a piece-wise quadratic approach, then the error distribution is in the order of 10- 3 .

Zero-touch network is anticipated to inaugurate the generation of intelligent and highly flexible resource provisioning strategies where multiple service providers collaboratively offer computation and storage resources. This transformation presents substantial challenges to network administration and service providers regarding sustainability and scalability. This article combines distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) with Zero-touch Provisioning (ZTP) for edge networks. This combination helps to manage network devices seamlessly and intelligently by minimizing human intervention. In addition, several advantages are also highlighted that come with incorporating distributed AI into ZTP in the context of edge networks. With the rapid development of the satellite industry, the information transmission network based on communication satellites has gradually become a major and important part of the future satellite ground integration network. However, the low transmission efficiency of the satellite data relay back mission has become a problem that is currently constraining the construction of the system and needs to be solved urgently. Effectively planning the task of satellite ground networking by reasonably scheduling resources is crucial for the efficient transmission of task data. In this paper, we hope to provide a task execution scheme that maximizes the profit of the networking task for satellite ground network planning considering feeding mode (SGNPFM). To solve the SGNPFM problem, a mixed-integer planning model with the objective of maximizing the gain of the link-building task is constructed, which considers various constraints of the satellite in the feed-switching mode. Based on the problem characteristics, we propose a distance similarity-based genetic optimization algorithm (DSGA), which considers the state characteristics between the tasks and introduces a weighted Euclidean distance method to determine the similarity between the tasks. To obtain more high-quality solutions, different similarity evaluation methods are designed to assist the algorithm in intelligently screening individuals. The DSGAalso uses an adaptive crossover strategy based on similarity mechanism, which guides the algorithm to achieve efficient population search. In addition, a task scheduling algorithm considering the feed-switching mode is designed for decoding the algorithm to generate a highquality scheme. The results of simulation experiments show that the DSGA can effectively solve the SGNPFM problem.
