This paper reports on ongoing research to design coordination and cooperation ubiquitous to the control and tasking of multiple heterogeneous physical robot agents (PRAs) using a real-time agent architecture. The primary objective of the work presented here is to develop a real-time agent architecture and a distributed architectural framework that enables multiple PRAs to coordinate time-constrained high-level tasks in a collaborative manner. At the abstract level, we identify two layers, cognitive and action, based on the type of the PRA's responsibilities. At the cognitive layer we propose an extended version of the coordinated, intelligent rational agent (CIR-agent) model for complex real-time systems. The architecture facilitates integration between the cognitive layer and the action layer through the controller and functional modules. Our architecture also recognizes the coexistence of agent-oriented frameworks, such as JADE, and non-agent frameworks, like CORBA, to accommodate the cognitive and the action layers respectively.

A comparative study between Java and Avaj, a concurrent programming language, is presented. java uses wait (), notify (), and notifyAll () construct to support monitors, while Avaj simply supports the construct await (B), where B is any Boolean expression. The syntax for the Avaj abort () construct is simple and allows programmer to call abort () inside any method. Avaj also incorporates the selective communication construct in the language. The invariant (B) construct in Avaj allows a Boolean expression to be invariant in a program.

Competition among software providers creates enormous pressure on design and development teams to improve application performance. However, increased performance leads to systems whose behaviour is harder to predict. This in turn makes software harder to manage, or self-manage in the case of autonomic software. In this paper we elaborate on this problem, first in generic terms, and then taking memoryusage monitoring in a Java Virtual Machine as a specific example. We motivate the need for more research in developing monitoring techniques that can cope with the complexity of modern software systems. We finally present our own efforts in this direction. Many of the community-area networks use commodity 802.11 hardware to form small wireless networks. Generally organized as a mesh, employing a single channel, and having a few gateways for wider-area access, they tend to offer poor bandwidth to end users. To increase bandwidth, the idea of leveraging multiple interfaces operating on different, non-overlapping, channels has been put forward recently. In this paper, we examine the performance of community wireless networks based on such multi-interface nodes. Our experiments demonstrate that the mere use of more dual-interface nodes does not necessarily create higher capacity. Indeed, in a number of cases we show that the throughput is lower than cases where fewer interfaces are used. We identify three causes for this throughput limitation: channel load, RTS/CTS and exposed nodes, and unfairness due to local traffic. Furthermore, we show that in random topologies, it is very often hard to achieve adequate throughput gain. © 2005 IEEE.

The behaviour of parallel and distributed programs can be modeled as the occurrence of events and their interrelationship. Event data collected according to the event model is stored within a partial-order data structure, where it can be reasoned about, enabling debugging, program steering, and autonomic feedback control of the application. Reasoning over event data, a critical requirement for autonomie computing, is typically in the form of predicate detection, a search mechanism able to detect and locate arbitrary predicates within the event data. To enable hierarchical predicate detection, compound events are formed by computing the convex closure of the matching primitive events. In particular, the Xie and Taylor convex-closure algorithm forms the basis for such an approach to predicate detection. Unfortunately, their algorithm can be quite slow, especially for hierarchical compound events. In this paper, we study the cause of the problems in the Xie and Taylor algorithm. We then develop an efficient extension to their algorithm, based on a simple caching scheme. We prove our algorithm correct. We also provide experimental results that demonstrate that our approach reduces the execution time of the Xie and Taylor algorithm by up to 98 percent. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are generally considered to be free havens for pirated content, in particular with respect to music. We describe a solution for the problem of copyright infringement in P2P networks for music sharing. In particular, we propose a P2P protocol that integrates the functions of identification, tracking, and sharing of music with those of licensing, monitoring, and payment. This highly decentralized music-aware P2P protocol will allow access to large amounts of music of guaranteed quality;it merges in a natural way the policing functions for copyright protection·and an efficient music-management infrastructure for the benefit of the user. © 2004 IEEE.

This panel paper presents the views of six researchers and practitioners of simulation modeling. Collectively we attempt to address a range of key future challenges to modeling methodology.
