This paper introduces a new deep learning approach to approximately solve the Covering Salesman Problem (CSP). In this approach, given the city locations of a CSP as input, a deep neural network model is designed to directly output the solution. It is trained using the deep reinforcement learning without supervision. Specifically, in the model, we apply the Multi-head Attention to capture the structural patterns, and design a dynamic embedding to handle the dynamic patterns of the problem. Once the model is trained, it can generalize to various types of CSP tasks (different sizes and topologies) with no need of re-training. Through controlled experiments, the proposed approach shows desirable time complexity: it runs more than 20 times faster than the traditional heuristic solvers with a tiny gap of optimality. Moreover, it significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches for combinatorial optimization in the aspect of both training and inference. In comparison with traditional solvers, this approach is highly desirable for most of the challenging tasks in practice that are usually large-scale and require quick decisions. HUNTER: AI based holistic resource management for sustainable cloud computing

The worldwide adoption of cloud data centers (CDCs) has given rise to the ubiquitous demand for hosting application services on the cloud. Further, contemporary data-intensive industries have seen a sharp upsurge in the resource requirements of modern applications. This has led to the provisioning of an increased number of cloud servers, giving rise to higher energy consumption and, consequently, sustainability concerns. Traditional heuristics and reinforcement learning based algorithms for energy-efficient cloud resource management address the scalability and adaptability related challenges to a limited extent. Existing work often fails to capture dependencies across thermal characteristics of hosts, resource consumption of tasks and the corresponding scheduling decisions. This leads to poor scalability and an increase in the compute resource requirements, particularly in environments with non-stationary resource demands. To address these limitations, we propose an artificial intelligence (AI) based holistic resource management technique for sustainable cloud computing called HUNTER. The proposed model formulates the goal of optimizing energy efficiency in data centers as a multi-objective scheduling problem, considering three important models: energy, thermal and cooling. HUNTER utilizes a Gated Graph Convolution Network as a surrogate model for approximating the Quality of Service (QoS) for a system state and generating optimal scheduling decisions. Experiments on simulated and physical cloud environments using the CloudSim toolkit and the COSCO framework show that HUNTER outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in terms of energy consumption, SLA violation, scheduling time, cost and temperature by up to 12, 35, 43, 54 and 3 percent respectively. © 2021, CC BY.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications’ Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings.

Improving unsupervised domain adaptation by reducing bi-level feature redundancy

Reducing feature redundancy has shown beneficial effects for improving the accuracy of deep learning models, thus it is also indispensable for the models of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA). Nevertheless, most recent efforts in the field of UDA ignore this point. Moreover, main schemes realizing this in general independent of UDA purely involve a single domain, thus might not be effective for cross-domain tasks. In this paper, we emphasize the significance of reducing feature redundancy for improving UDA in a bi-level way. For the first level, we try to ensure compact domain-specific features with a transferable decorrelated normalization module, which preserves specific domain information whilst easing the side effect of feature redundancy on the sequel domain-invariance. In the second level, domain-invariant feature redundancy caused by domain-shared representation is further mitigated via an alternative brand orthogonality for better generalization. These two novel aspects can be easily plugged into any BN-based backbone neural networks. Specifically, simply applying them to ResNet50 has achieved competitive performance to the state-of-the-arts on five popular benchmarks. User-Item (U-I) matrix has been used as the dominant data infrastructure of Collaborative Filtering (CF). To reduce space consumption in runtime and storage, caused by data sparsity and growing need to accommodate side information in CF design, one needs to go beyond the U-I Matrix. In this paper, we took a case study of Succinct Representations in Collaborative Filtering, rather than using a U-I Matrix. Our key insight is to introduce Succinct Data Structures as a new infrastructure of CF. Towards this, we implemented a User-based K-Nearest-Neighbor CF prototype via Wavelet Tree, by first designing a Accessible Compressed Documents (ACD) to compress U-I data in Wavelet Tree, which is efficient in both storage and runtime. Then, we showed that ACD can be applied to develop an efficient intersection algorithm without decompression, by taking advantage of ACD's characteristics. We evaluated our design on 1,000 cores of Tianhe-II supercomputer, with one of the largest public data set ml-20m. The results showed that our prototype could achieve 3.7 minutes on average to deliver the results. © 2019 IEEE.

These days' smart buildings have high intensive information and massive operational parameters, not only extensive power consumption. With the development of computation capability and future 5 G, the ACP theory(i.e., artificial systems,computational experiments, and parallel computing) will play a much more crucial role in modeling and control of complex systems like commercial and academic buildings. The necessity of making accurate predictions of energy consumption out of a large number of operational parameters has become a crucial problem in smart buildings. Previous attempts have been made to seek energy consumption predictions based on historical data in buildings. However, there are still questions about parallel building consumption prediction mechanism using a large number of operational parameters. This article proposes a novel hybrid deep learning prediction approach that utilizes long short-term memory as an encoder and gated recurrent unit as a decoder in conjunction with ACP theory. The proposed approach is tested and validated by real-world dataset, and the results outperformed traditional predictive models compared in this paper.

In this paper we present a new real time method for Air Traffic Control inside Terminal Management Advisor (TMA) space based on the Earliest Deadline First algorithm (EDF). The proposed method consists to;(i) modulate the landing aircraft process on the real time task with period Ti, deadline Di and execution time Ci, (ii) evaluate and manage the aircraft landing priority using EDF specifications and (iii) execute the aircraft landing process. The main goal of this research is optimizes the global Air Traffic Delay ATD in order to minimize the aircraft delays, to preserve the environment and to offers quality passenger service. To evaluate the performances of the new real time method, we compare it with the FCFS (First Come First Served) method most used actually by air traffic controller to manage the air traffic inside the TMA space. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

In software-defined networks(SDNs),controller placement is a critical factor in the design and planning for the future Internet of Things(IoT),telecommunication,and satellite communication *** research has concentrated largely on factors such as reliability,latency,controller capacity,propagation delay,and energy ***,SDNs are vulnerable to distributed denial of service(DDoS)attacks that interfere with legitimate use of the *** ever-increasing frequency of DDoS attacks has made it necessary to consider them in network design,especially in critical applications such as military,health care,and financial services networks requiring high *** propose a mathematical model for planning the deployment of SDN smart backup controllers(SBCs)to preserve service in the presence of DDoS *** a number of input parameters,our model has two distinct ***,it determines the optimal number of primary controllers to place at specific locations or nodes under normal operating ***,it recommends an optimal number of smart backup controllers for use with different levels of DDoS *** goal of the model is to improve resistance to DDoS attacks while optimizing the overall cost based on the *** simulated results demonstrate that the model is useful in planning for SDN reliability in the presence of DDoS attacks while managing the overall cost.

Author name disambiguation (AND) is an important task in the field of scientific data mining. It has become a great challenge with the rapid growth of academic digital libraries. The task of AND for a large number of authors is computationally intensive. In particular, an author's name in MEDLINE is represented by full last name and initials, like 'Zhang S', which leads to a lot of identical strings that actually represent different names. In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm for parallel AND computation. The proposed algorithm mainly addresses the load balancing issue across many computing nodes. It involves the following strategies:(1) Author-based load balancing, which splits the computation load for each core by author name labels. (2) Matrix-based strategy, which calculates the pairwise similarity between publications and saves them in a matrix globally shared by all processes. Then group them by width-first search. We combine the above two strategies, the second of which is used to calculate authors with a large number of documents, and the other authors apply the first. We constructed a publications database written by Chinese authors from MEDLINE, the biggest public database for biomedical literature (abstracts). For benchmark testing, we experimented our algorithm with a dataset of 1 million publications on the Tianhe-2A supercomputer. Firstly, we trained an AND classifier that can achieve 98.1% of F1. The serial computation time is estimated to be approximately 246 hours, while the parallel execution time is approximately 66 hours in the case of four cores on a single node (with a speedup of 3.7x). Finally, we reduced the total parallel computing time of 1 million documents to about 2 hours and achieved 65.8% of parallelism efficiency using 200 cores on 90 nodes. © 2019 IEEE.
