Today most used devices are connected with each other building the Internet of Things (IoT). A variety of protocols are used depending on the underlying network infrastructure, application (e.g., Smart City, eHealth), and device capability. The judgment of the security feeling of the data sharing depends on personal settings (e.g., easy to use, encrypted transmission, anonymization support). MoDeNA – a Mobile Device Network Assistant – was developed offering an opportunity for understanding the judgment of security by bringing the user’s concerns and their technology understanding of used devices and protocols into relation. MoDeNA provides a transparent overview over the used wireless security of the user’s device giving concrete advices for improving the connection security and usability of mobile device security. © The Author(s) 2017.

Eunomia: Scaling Concurrent Search Trees under Contention Using HTM

While hardware transactional memory (HTM) has recently been adopted to construct efficient concurrent search tree structures, such designs fail to deliver scalable performance under contention. In this paper, we first conduct a detailed analysis on an HTM-based concurrent B+Tree, which uncovers several reasons for excessive HTM aborts induced by both false and true conflicts under contention. Based on the analysis, we advocate Eunomia, a design pattern for search trees which contains several principles to reduce HTM aborts, including splitting HTM regions with version-based concurrency control to reduce HTM working sets, partitioned data layout to reduce false conflicts, proactively detecting and avoiding true conflicts, and adaptive concurrency control. To validate their effectiveness, we apply such designs to construct a scalable concurrent B+Tree using HTM. Evaluation using key-value store benchmarks on a 20-core HTM-capable multi-core machine shows that Eunomia leads to 5X-11X speedup under high contention, while incurring small overhead under low contention. © 2017 ACM.

The scale of global data center market has been explosive in recent years. As the market grows, the demand for fast provisioning of the virtual resources to support elas- tic, manageable, and economical computing over the cloud becomes high. Fast provisioning of large-scale virtual ma- chines （VMs）, in particular, is critical to guarantee quality of service （QoS）. In this paper, we systematically review the existing VM provisioning schemes and classify them in three main categories. We discuss the features and research status of each category, and introduce two recent solutions, VMThunder and VMThunder＋, both of which can provision hundreds of VMs in seconds.

Attribute-based access control (ABAC) represents a generic model of access control that provides a high level of flexibility and promotes information and security sharing. Since ABAC considers a large set of attributes for access decisions, using it might get very complicated for large systems. Hence, it is interesting to offer techniques to reduce the number of rules in ABAC policies without affecting the final decision. In this paper, we present an approach based on K-nearest neighbors algorithms for clustering ABAC policies. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first approach that aims to reduce the number of policy rules based on similarity computations. Our evaluation results demonstrate the efficiency of the suggested approach. For instance, the reduction rate can reach up to 10% for an ABAC policy with more than 9000 rules. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

SPECTRE: Supporting consumption policies in window-based parallel complex event processing

distributed Complex Event Processing (DCEP) is a paradigm to infer the occurrence of complex situations in the surrounding world from basic events like sensor readings. In doing so, DCEP operators detect event patterns on their incoming event streams. To yield high operator throughput, data parallelization frameworks divide the incoming event streams of an operator into overlapping windows that are processed in parallel by a number of operator instances. In doing so, the basic assumption is that the different windows can be processed independently from each other. However, consumption policies enforce that events can only be part of one pattern instance;then, they are consumed, i.e., removed from further pattern detection. That implies that the constituent events of a pattern instance detected in one window are excluded from all other windows as well, which breaks the data parallelism between different windows. In this paper, we tackle this problem by means of speculation: Based on the likelihood of an event's consumption in a window, subsequent windows may speculatively suppress that event. We propose the SPECTRE framework for speculative processing of multiple dependent windows in parallel. Our evaluations show an up to linear scalability of SPECTRE with the number of CPU cores. In this paper, we discuss the problem of safe navigation by solving a non-linear model for a four-wheel robot while avoiding the upcoming obstacles that may cross its path using the Decomposition Coordination Method (DC). The method consists of first, choosing a non-linear system with the associated objective functions to optimize. Then we carry on the resolution of the model using the Decomposition Coordination Method, which allows the non-linearity of the model to be handled locally and ensures coordination through the use of the Lagrange multipliers. An obstacle-avoidance algorithm is presented thus offering a collision-free solution. A numerical application is given to concert the efficiency of the method employed herein along with the simulation results.

Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new approach for solving the navigation problem of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) by studying its rotational and translational dynamics and then solving the nonlinear model by the Decomposition Coordination method. The objective is to reach a destination goal by the mean of an autonomous computed optimal path calculated through optimal control sequence. Solving such complex systems often requires a great amount of computation. However, the approach considered herein is based on the Decomposition Coordination principle, which allows the nonlinearity to be treated at a local level, thus offering a low computing time. The stability of the method is discussed with sufficient conditions for convergence. A numerical application is given in consolidation the theoretical results.

In this research, we apply the Green's theory for converting the partial differential equation to the boundary integral equation for geometric transformation. Green's theory is designed specifically for integral equation. It is efficient in detecting the singularity point to the geometric transformation that has been verified. Experimental results show that the Green's theory has good performance. © 2016 IEEE.
