The abundant computing resources available on the Internet has made grid computing over the Internet a viable solution, to scientific problems. The dynamic nature of the Internet necessitates dynamic reconfigurability of applications to handle failures and varying loads. Most of the existing grid solutions handle reconfigurability to a limited extent. These systems lack appropriate support to handle the failure of key-components, like coordinators, essential for the computational model. We propose a two layered peer-to-peer middleware, Vishwa, to handle reconfiguration of the application in the face of failure and system load. The two-layers, task management layer and reconfiguration layer, are used in conjunction by the applications to adapt and mask node failures. We show that our system is able to handle the failures of the key-components of a computation model. This is demonstrated in the case studies of two computational models, namely bag of tasks and connected problems, with an appropriate example for each

When transacting and interacting through open computer networks, traditional methods used in the physical world for establishing trust can no longer be used. Creating virtual network substitutes with which people, organisations and software agents can derive trust in other parties requires computerised analysis of the underlying trust networks. This article describes an approach to trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL), that consists of the three following elements. Firstly it uses a concise notation with which trust transitivity and parallel combination of trust paths can be expressed. Secondly it defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in this concise form. Finally it allows trust measures to be expressed as beliefs, so that derived trust can be automatically and securely computed with subjective logic. We compare our approach with trust derivation algorithms that are based on normalisation such as PageRank and EigenTrust. We also provide a numerical example to illustrates how TNA-SL can be applied. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

In P2P systems, the speed of searching for desired lists of sharable files is one of the most important measurement issues in evaluation of overall system performance. Although the searching schemes of existing non-structured P2P systems have been improved to enhance speed considerably, they still never reach to the level of those of the centralized and structured systems. In this paper, we propose a multi-node global directory in P2P systems, where all the lists of sharable resources of the joining peers are aggregated and divided into the chosen nodes while keeping collating sequence as a whole to make one big linked list. Thus in indexed sequential searching, the system provides us with convenience of using the command like 'dir' of MS-DOS, and in general keyword searching, which is naturally impossible for the structured P2P systems, the searching speed is even faster than those of centralized P2P systems since a small list segment is scanned at each node synchronously in parallel

Determinism is mandatory for replicating distributed objects with strict consistency guarantees. Multithreaded execution of method invocations is a source of nondeterminism, but helps to improve performance and avoids deadlocks that nested invocations can cause in a single-threaded execution model. This paper contributes a novel algorithm for deterministic thread scheduling based on the interception of synchronisation statements. It assumes that shared data are protected by mutexes and client requests are sent to all replicas in total order; requests are executed concurrently as long as they do not issue potentially conflicting synchronisation operations. No additional communication is required for granting locks in a consistent order in all replicas. In addition to reentrant mutex locks, the algorithm supports condition variables and time-bounded wait operations. An experimental evaluation shows that, in some typical usage patterns of distributed objects, the algorithm is superior to other existing approaches

The advent of service-oriented grid computing has resulted in the need for grid resources such as clusters to enforce user-specific service needs and expectations. Service level agreements (SLAs) define conditions which a cluster needs to fulfill for various jobs. An example of SLA requirement is the deadline by which a job has to be completed. In addition, these clusters implement job admission control so that overall service performance does not deteriorate due to accepting exceeding amount of jobs. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on accurate runtime estimates of jobs. This paper thus examines the adverse impact of inaccurate runtime estimates for deadline constrained job admission control in clusters using the earliest deadline first (EDF) strategy and a deadline-based proportional processor share strategy called Libra. Simulation results show that an enhancement called LibraRisk can manage the risk of inaccurate runtime estimates better than EDF and Libra by considering the risk of deadline delay

In previous years, many studies have been conducted on grid computing, in which users and resource providers organize various virtual organizations (VOs) to share resources and services. A VO organizes other sub-VOs for the purpose of achieving the VO goal, which forms the hierarchical VO environment. In this paper, we model and formalize the resource allocation problem in hierarchical VOs. Resource providers and VOs agree upon the VO resource sharing policy, such as resource sharing amount and resource usage cost for VOs. We provide the resource allocation scheme of a VO resource broker to minimize the total cost in order to meet a user's job deadline. In addition, we deal with several cost adjustment methods in resource providers to utilize their resources efficiently in hierarchical VOs

Grid computing has emerged as an effective means of facilitating the sharing of distributed heterogeneous resources, enabling collaboration in large scale environments. However, the nature of grid systems coupled with the overabundance and fragmentation of information, makes it difficult to monitor resources, services, and computations in order to plan and make decisions. In this paper we present Gridscape II, a customisable portal component that can be used on its own or plugged-in to compliment existing grid portals. Gridscape II manages the gathering of information from arbitrary, heterogeneous and distributed sources and presents them together seamlessly within a single interface. It also leverages the Google Maps API in order to provide a highly interactive user interface. Gridscape II is simple and easy to use, providing a solution to those users who do not wish to invest heavily in developing their own monitoring portal from scratch, and also for those users who want something easy to customise and extend for their specific needs

In this paper, we present a robot middleware technology named Robot Software Communications Architecture (RSCA) for its use in networked home service robots. The RSCA provides a standard operating environment for the robot applications together with a framework that expedites the development of such applications. The operating environment is comprised of a real-time operating system, a communication middleware, and a deployment middleware. Particularly, the deployment middleware supports the reconfiguration of component-based robot applications including installation, creation, start, stop, tear-down, and un-installation, In designing RSCA, we have adopted a middleware called SCA from the software defined radio domain and extend it since the original SCA lacks the real-time guarantees and appropriate event services. We have fully implemented RSCA and performed measurements to quantify its run-time performance. Our implementation clearly shows the viability of RSCA. © 2006 IEEE.

Over the last few years, grid technologies have progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way of service provisioning based on utility computing models. Users consume these services based on their QoS (quality of service) requirements. In such “pay-per-use” grids, workflow execution cost must be considered during scheduling based on users' QoS constraints. In this paper, we propose a budget constraint based scheduling, which minimizes execution time while meeting a specified budget for delivering results. A new type of genetic algorithm is developed to solve the scheduling optimization problem and we test the scheduling algorithm in a simulated grid testbed.

Failure-over and recovery is a crucial issue for large-scale multimedia storage system (MSS). In the literature, there are two fail-over policies: active-standby fail-over and active-active fail-over. In this paper, we adopt an active-active policy and design two heuristic algorithms to determine the number and the placement of the object replicas among the multimedia servers. One is named as "minimum average waiting time" (MAWT) strategy, in which we will choose the server to store an object replica according to an optimal solution, and the other algorithm is named as "one of the best two choices" (OBTC) strategy, in which we will randomly choose one out of the first two best choices according to an optimal solution. We analyze their performance in the cases when the system runs normally and when some failure occurs. Via rigorous simulations, we find that when the system is running normally (without failures), MAWT performs better than OBTC and when some server fails, OBTC performs much better than MAWT
