In the design and planning of next-generation Internet of Things(IoT),telecommunication,and satellite communication systems,controller placement is crucial in software-defined networking(SDN).The programmability of the SDN controller is sophisticated for the centralized control system of the entire ***,it creates a significant loophole for the manifestation of a distributed denial of service(DDoS)attack ***,recently a distributed Reflected Denial of Service(DRDoS)attack,an unusual DDoS attack,has been ***,minimal deliberation has given to this forthcoming single point of SDN infrastructure failure ***,recently the high frequencies of DDoS attacks have increased *** this paper,a smart algorithm for planning SDN smart backup controllers under DDoS attack scenarios has *** proposed smart algorithm can recommend single or multiple smart backup controllers in the event of DDoS *** obtained simulated results demonstrate that the validation of the proposed algorithm and the performance analysis achieved 99.99%accuracy in placing the smart backup controller under DDoS attacks within 0.125 to 46508.7 s in SDN.

In this paper, the effects of two algorithms (i.e., K-means clustering, Cosine similarity) on the structure of a social network (i.e., Twitter, scientific research papers) is studied to examine the formation of communities when the users follow the recommendations provided by a simulator. The relationship among the users can be either follower-followee in a Twitter dataset or a paper-publication venue in a scientific research paper dataset. The purpose is to evaluate how detected communities and the resulted network graph differ when following the recommendations provided by the employed algorithms after the system recommends the top-N recommendations for a selected user.

SNNs have achieved great attention in recent years as they contain neurons more like those in the brain and use spikes to encode and transmit information efficiently among neurons with lower energy consumption. A Retina-LGN-V1 structure-like spiking neuron network (RLVSL-SNN) is proposed in this paper. It is inspired by the structure of mammalian primary visual pathway, and simulates different biological structures of Retina, LGN and V1. Noise reduction circuit and light adaptation circuit are also simulated for enhancing the robustness of its extracted features. RLVSL-SNN is a bio-plausible neuron network as it has firing rates of neurons in each layer that are similar to those of biological experiments. Besides, a full-connected SNN (FC SNN) is implemented following RLVSL-SNN for classification to evaluate the extracted features. The additive spiking timing dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rules and the ANN-to-SNN conversion method are utilized to train RLVSL-SNN and FC SNN, respectively. The experiments on MNIST dataset have verified that RLVSL-SNN is comparable to AlexNet for classification by features from spikes.

Polyjuice: High-performance transactions via learned concurrency control

Concurrency control algorithms are key determinants of the performance of in-memory databases. Existing algorithms are designed to work well for certain workloads. For example, optimistic concurrency control (OCC) is better than twophase- locking (2PL) under low contention, while the converse is true under high contention. To adapt to different workloads, prior works mix or switch between a few known algorithms using manual insights or simple heuristics. We propose a learning-based framework that instead explicitly optimizes concurrency control via offline training to maximize performance. Instead of choosing among a small number of known algorithms, our approach searches in a "policy space" of fine-grained actions, resulting in novel algorithms that can outperform existing algorithms by specializing to a given workload. We build Polyjuice based on our learning framework and evaluate it against several existing algorithms. Under different configurations of TPC-C and TPC-E, Polyjuice can achieve throughput numbers higher than the best of existing algorithms by 15% to 56%. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Machine learning for education is an emerging discipline where a model is developed based on training data to make predictions on students’ performance. The main aim is to identify students who would have difficulty in their learning and to take precautionary measures to help them. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning classification models in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure, and execution time using two real-life education datasets. The performance of the models is data-driven. We give insights into the models’ performance and advise on the best model to use accordingly. In distributed systems, checkpointing method can be used to ensure fault-tolerance, which in turn could help the system’s security and stability. In simple terms, checkpointing means saving status information of a system. In this work, a novel hierarchical checkpointing algorithm for distributed systems is proposed, which runs on cluster federation. This algorithm is based on two well-known techniques in the literature and it ensures that a locally consistent state is always maintained in each cluster with a global optimistic logging technique between clusters. The proposed algorithm synchronizes the intra- and inter-cluster checkpointing process in such way that each checkpoint taken locally in any cluster is a segment of the consistent global state. Compared to other works, our scheme has low message cost as it makes sure that only few processes in each cluster record checkpoints for any execution operation. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

The processor's Performance Monitor Unit (PMU) allows the recording of architectural and microarchitectural events for profiling purposes. In this study, we reveal a security issue caused by the fact that current PMU implementations are capable of recording some events that happened during transient executions. We propose the PMU -Spill attack, a new kind of attack that enables attackers to maliciously leak the secret data in transient executions. We demonstrate on real hardware that PMU -Spill attack can leak the secret data stored in Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX). In addition, we perform a thorough study to reveal all the vulnerable PMU counters and find that 20 of them can be used to achieve PMU -Spill attack. Our experiments suggest that the throughput of PMU -Spill attack is up to 575.3 bytes per second (Bps) with an average error rate of 1.89% when leaking the SGX-protected secret data.

With the exponential growth of biomedical knowledge in unstructured text repositories such as PubMed, it is imminent to establish a knowledge graph-style, efficient searchable and targeted database that can support the need of information retrieval from researchers and clinicians. To mine knowledge from graph databases, most previous methods view a triple in a graph (see Fig. 1) as the basic processing unit and embed the triplet element (i.e. drugs/chemicals, proteins/genes and their interaction) as separated embedding matrices, which cannot capture the semantic correlation among triple elements. To remedy the loss of semantic correlation caused by disjoint embeddings, we propose a novel approach to learn triple embeddings by combining entities and interactions into a unified representation. Furthermore, traditional methods usually learn triple embeddings from scratch, which cannot take advantage of the rich domain knowledge embedded in pre-trained models, and is also another significant reason for the fact that they cannot distinguish the differences implied by the same entity in the multi-interaction triples. In this paper, we propose a novel fine-tuning based approach to learn better triple embeddings by creating weakly supervised signals from pre-trained knowledge graph embeddings. The method automatically samples triples from knowledge graphs and estimates their pairwise similarity from pre-trained embedding models. The triples are then fed pairwise into a Siamese-like neural architecture, where the triple representation is fine-tuned in the manner bootstrapped by triple similarity scores. Finally, we demonstrate that triple embeddings learned with our method can be readily applied to several downstream applications (e.g. triple classification and triple clustering). We evaluated the proposed method on two open-source drug-protein knowledge graphs constructed from PubMed abstracts, as provided by BioCreative. Our method achieves consistent improvement in both t

COVID-19 has infected more than 68 million people worldwide since it was first detected about a year ago. Machine learning time series models have been implemented to forecast COVID-19 infections. In this paper, we develop time series models for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries using the public COVID-19 dataset from Johns Hopkins. The dataset set includes the one-year cumulative COVID-19 cases between 22/01/2020 to 22/01/2021. We developed different models for the countries under study based on the spatial distribution of the infection data. Quantization is an effective method for compressing Deep Neural Networks. Now, it is considered to accelerate the traditional HPC applications. In this article, we present a quantization method (q8gemm) using integer 8-bits(INT8) for matrix multiplication, which is implemented by block techniques to overcome the overflow problem. We choose different scales for one matrix’s each row and those for the other matrix’s each column to keep the numbers in range. With the intel advanced matrix extension cblas_gemm_s8u8s32, our q8gemm can accelerate panel-matrix multiplication in LU factorization. Furthermore, we propose a new mixed-precision solver (q8gesv 1 ) for the linear equations. Using q8gemm in INT8, q8gesv modifies LU factorization in FP32 and then utilizes GMRES iterative refinement in FP64 to bring the solution back to 64 bits accuracy. Numerical tests show that on two Intel CPU platforms with avx2 and avx512, q8gemm achieves a speedup of 1.313-1.621 over cblas_sgemm of MKL. The execution time of cblas_gemm_s8u8s32 makes up 86.78%-90.85% of the q8gemm. By means of q8gemm, our q8gesv can achieve a speedup of 1.176-1.493 over the optimized Higham’s mixed-precision algorithm utilized in the HPL-AI benchmark and a speedup of 1.1-1.459 over the LAPACKE_dsgesv function from MKL LAPACK. Meanwhile, q8gesv runs up to 2.859X faster on Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600KF and to 2.224X faster on Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6130 than the LAPACKE_dgesv function from MKL LAPACK.
