The inherent nature of energy,i.e.,physicality,sociality and informatization,implies the inevitable and intensive interaction between energy systems and social *** this perspective,we define "social energy" as a complex sociotechnical system of energy systems,social systems and the derived artificial virtual systems which characterize the intense intersystem and intra-system *** recent advancement in intelligent technology,including artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies,sensing and communication in Internet of Things technologies,and massive high performance computing and extreme-scale data analytics technologies,enables the possibility of substantial advancement in socio-technical system optimization,scheduling,control and *** this paper,we provide a discussion on the nature of energy,and then propose the concept and intention of social energy systems for electrical power.A general methodology of establishing and investigating social energy is proposed,which is based on the ACP approach,i.e., "artificial systems"(A), "computational experiments"(C) and "parallel execution"(P),and parallel system methodology.A case study on the University of Denver(DU) campus grid is provided and studied to demonstrate the social energy *** the concluding remarks,we discuss the technical pathway,in both social and nature sciences,to social energy,and our vision on its future.

In this paper, we present a novel investigation into the influence of out-of-phase cyclic normal load and axial stress ratios on fretting fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviours. Unlike previous studies that primarily focus on constant normal load, our research employs advanced numerical models to provide for the first time a detailed analysis of the effect of out-of-phase cyclic normal load on fretting fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviours. Due to the non-proportional loading conditions, the frequency of loading, normal load ratio, and cyclic stress ratio play important roles in both crack initiation and propagation phases, which are not yet fully understood. Some experimental results reflect the effect of normal load ratio and cyclic stress ratio on the total fretting fatigue lifetime and wear scar, but there are no direct conclusions. This paper uses the Critical Plane Method and the Theory of Critical Distance to estimate crack initiation behaviour and lifetime. At the same time, the Extended Maximum Tangential Stress criterion from Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics theory is applied to analyse the impact of load stress ratio on crack propagation path and lifetime, saving experimental time through numerical modelling. The enhancement ratios of crack propagation lifetime are less significant than those of crack initiation lifetime with varying axial stress ratios. Moreover, the impact of the stress ratio of both loads shows discrepancies under high and low cycle fatigue regimes.

In this paper we investigate the problem of finding a delay- and degree-bounded maximum sum of nodes application level multicast tree. We then proved the problem is NP-hard, and its relationship with the well-studied degree-bounded minimum maximum-delay multicast tree problem. We propose a distributed algorithm - OverStream, which adopts PPAF heuristic for father node to choose optimal child nodes based on multiple network parameters. Simulation results show that our algorithm is better than OMNI, SpreadIt, HMTP, and Zigzag in general. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper we address the problem of partitioning nested loops with non-uniform (irregular) dependence vectors. parallelizing and partitioning of nested loops requires efficient inter-iteration dependence analysis. Although many methods exist for nested loop partitioning, most of these perform poorly when parallelizing nested loops with irregular dependences. Unlike the case of nested loops with uniform dependences these will have a complicated dependence pattern which forms a non-uniform dependence vector set. We apply the results of classical convex theory and principles of linear programming to iteration spaces and show the correspondence between minimum dependence distance computation and iteration space tiling. Cross-iteration dependences are analyzed by forming an Integer Dependence Convex Hull (IDCH). Every integer point in this IDCH corresponds to a dependence vector in the iteration space of the nested loops. A simple way to compute minimum dependence distances from the dependence distance vectors of the extreme points of the IDCH is presented. Using these minimum dependence distances the iteration space can be tiled. Iterations within a tile can be executed in parallel and the different tiles can then be executed with proper synchronization. We demonstrate that our technique gives much better speedup and extracts more parallelism than the existing techniques.

In the recovery of failed processes in a distributed program, causal logging schemes offer several benefits. These benefits include no rollback of unfailed processes and simple approaches to output commit. Unfortunately, previous approaches to the recovery of multiple simultaneous failures require that the distributed execution be blocked or that recovering processes coordinate. The latter requires assumptions which are not satisfactory. In this paper we present a solution that has neither of these drawbacks.

These days' smart buildings have high intensive information and massive operational parameters, not only extensive power consumption. With the development of computation capability and future 5 G, the ACP theory(i.e., artificial systems,computational experiments, and parallel computing) will play a much more crucial role in modeling and control of complex systems like commercial and academic buildings. The necessity of making accurate predictions of energy consumption out of a large number of operational parameters has become a crucial problem in smart buildings. Previous attempts have been made to seek energy consumption predictions based on historical data in buildings. However, there are still questions about parallel building consumption prediction mechanism using a large number of operational parameters. This article proposes a novel hybrid deep learning prediction approach that utilizes long short-term memory as an encoder and gated recurrent unit as a decoder in conjunction with ACP theory. The proposed approach is tested and validated by real-world dataset, and the results outperformed traditional predictive models compared in this paper.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger based on peer-to-peer networks, originally used for crypto-currency systems. Blockchains are being used as an enabling technology for decentralised applications in the areas of Internet-of-Things, finance, supply-chain and others. Consistency, data privacy, performance, and energy efficiency are of paramount importance in such applications. The full nodes of public, permissionless blockchains undertake the task of verifying the transactions generated by the network. Full nodes perform operations such as confirming balances, transactions, and history, i.e. mostly database search queries. Consequently, their throughput is crucial for the performance of blockchain systems. In this work, the benefits of accelerating the blockchain search and insert queries by leveraging GPU platforms are studied. An extensive comparison between the most dominant utilized database is provided, i.e. LevelDB, and MegaKV, a high-performance GPU-accelerated database. Realistic operations that take place in blockchain systems are emulated and evaluated over representative scenarios, showing three orders of magnitude gains in throughput and energy efficiency without compromising the security aspect. The extensive comparison between LevelDB and MegaKV indicates that GPU acceleration is an effective solution for runtime and energy efficiency enhancement of blockchain systems, and the integration of the two technologies is a promising field of research. © 2022 The Authors. Punctuation restoration in speech recognition has a wide range of application scenarios. Despite the widespread success of neural networks methods at performing punctuation restoration for English, there have been only limited attempts for Chinese punctuation restoration. Due to the differences between Chinese and English in terms of grammar and basic semantic units, existing methods for English is not suitable for Chinese punctuation restoration. To tackle this problem, we propose a hybrid model combining the kernel of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). This model employs a flexible structure and special CNN design which can extract word-level features for Chinese language. We compared the performance of the hybrid model with five widely-used punctuation restoration models on the public dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our hybrid model is simple and efficient. It outperforms other models and achieves an accuracy of 69.1%. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, we present the Rollick Games platform and its Pervasive Game Modeling Language that enables the description of location-based pervasive games using a GUI provided by the Game Studio web app. The runtime environment (Pervasive Game Execution Environment) is responsible for generating the Pervasive Game Execution Language from a game model and loading it to an instance of the game's Execution Engine. The Execution Environment includes a set of agents responsible for monitoring the players’ context and interaction with other game elements and among each other. The Engine follows an event-driven paradigm and uses an event loop waiting for events to be dispatched from the agents to carry out its computations based on its current state, context, and event data. The proposed approach allows for both sharing and reusing game models, significantly reducing time to market and development costs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The paper describes a technique to correct crash faults in large data structures hosted on distributed servers, based on the concept of fused backups. The prevalent solution to this problem is replication. To correct f crash faults among n distinct data structures, replication requires nf additional replicas. If each of the primaries contains O(m) nodes of O(s) size each, this translates to O(nmsf) total backup space. Our technique uses a combination of erasure correcting codes and selective replication to correct f crash faults using just f additional backups consuming O(msf) total backup space, while incurring minimal overhead during normal operation. Since the data is maintained in the coded form, recovery is costly as compared to replication. However, in a system with infrequent faults, the savings in space outweighs the cost of recovery. We explore the theory and algorithms for these fused backups and provide a library of such backups for all the data structures in the Java 6 Collection framework. Our experimental evaluation confirms that fused backups are space-efficient as compared to replication (almost n times), while they cause very little overhead for updates. Many real world distributed systems such as Amazon's Dynamo data store use replication to achieve reliability. An alternate, fusion-based design can result in significant savings in space as well as other resources such as power.
