The purpose of this paper is to present a modified version of the ant colony system (ACS) algorithm. The modified ACS algorithm is faster and it has a better performance than the standard ACS algorithm. We have established a set of local rules/modifications, that do improve the performance of the standard ACS and these are reported here.

The replacement of conventional generating units with non-conventional renewable energy resources impacts the reliability of power systems. With high integration of renewable-based generation resources, there is a reduction in total system inertia, which could lead to systems with less time to react for frequency restoration in case of unexpected unit failures. Though several power system testbeds are available for studying and analysing different stability phenomena, none are suitable for characterizing, or analyzing low-inertia conditions. In this paper, a power system simulation environment is introduced for investigating control architectures for power grids, with special attention to the impact of high penetration of inverter-based generation resources (IBRs). The testbed is applied to the WSCC 9- bus test system, modified so that a range of IBR penetration levels can be analyzed (from zero to 80%). The testbed is suitable for studying both fast and slow electromechanical phenomena. A conclusion from numerical experiments is that high levels of IBRs do not necessarily result in low-inertia. This is due in part to the layers of control in the grid already in place to avoid frequency excursions. © 2022 IEEE.

With the continuous deepening of Artificial Neural Network(ANN)research,ANN model structure and function are improving towards diversification and ***,the model is more evaluated from the pros and cons of the problem-solving results and the lack of evaluation from the biomimetic aspect of imitating neural networks is not inclusive ***,a new ANN models evaluation strategy is proposed from the perspective of bionics in response to this problem in the ***,four classical neural network models are illustrated:Back Propagation(BP)network,Deep Belief Network(DBN),LeNet5 network,and olfactory bionic model(KIII model),and the neuron transmission mode and equation,network structure,and weight updating principle of the models are analyzed *** analysis results show that the KIII model comes closer to the actual biological nervous system compared with other models,and the LeNet5 network simulates the nervous system in ***,evaluation indexes of ANN are constructed from the perspective of bionics in this paper:small-world,synchronous,and chaotic ***,the network model is quantitatively analyzed by evaluation indexes from the perspective of *** experimental results show that the DBN network,LeNet5 network,and BP network have synchronous *** the DBN network and LeNet5 network have certain chaotic characteristics,but there is still a certain distance between the three classical neural networks and actual biological neural *** KIII model has certain small-world characteristics in structure,and its network also exhibits synchronization characteristics and chaotic *** with the DBN network,LeNet5 network,and the BP network,the KIII model is closer to the real biological neural network.

Performance in multihop wireless networks is known to degrade with the number of hops for both TCP and UDP traffic. For VoIP, the wireless network presents additional challenges as the perceived quality is dependent on loss, delay and jitter. Furthermore, small size of VoIP packets aggravates network utilization of the 802.11 based wireless mesh network. In this work, we evaluate the packet aggregation algorithms to reduce VoIP protocol overhead, compare the aggregation algorithms and propose a distributed packet aggregation mechanism. The experimental results demonstrates that the proposed distributed packet aggregation algorithm improves the VoIP quality and results in significant increase in the number high quality VoIP calls supported over multihop mesh. © 2006 IEEE.

A heterogeneous environment for hardware/software cosimulation is described. This environment permits a portion of an application's subsystems to be simulated using reconfigurable hardware while the remainder of the subsystems are simulated using software. An Aptix FPCB populated with Xilinx FPGAs serves as the hardware simulation platform while an IBM-compatible PC serves as the software simulation platform. The two platforms are connected using an Altera reconfigurable logic board which allows the development of a high-speed interface for communication. This paper focuses on the difficulties associated with designing and interfacing simulation entities in this heterogeneous environment. Strategies for designing hardware and software simulation entities are introduced. These strategies reduce the impact of size and performance constraints imposed by the cosimulation environment while addressing the issues of time management and synchronization. A simple queueing application is used to illustrate a design methodology which incorporates these design strategies.

A distributed Multi-Storage Resource Architecture and I/O Performance Prediction for Scientific Computing

I/O intensive applications have posed great challenges to computational scientists. A major problem of these applications is that users have to sacrifice performance requirements in order to satisfy storage capacity requirements in a conventional computing environment. Further performance improvement is impeded by the physical nature of these storage media even when state-of-the-art I/O optimizations are employed. In this paper, we present a distributed multi-storage resource architecture, which can satisfy both performance and capacity requirements by employing multiple storage resources. Compared to a traditional single storage resource architecture, our architecture provides a more flexible and reliable computing environment. This architecture can bring new opportunities for high performance computing as well as inherit state-of-the-art I/O optimization approaches that have already been developed. It provides application users with high-performance storage access even when they do not have the availability of a single large local storage archive at their disposal. We also develop an Application Programming Interface (API) that provides transparent management and access to various storage resources in our computing environment. Since I/O usually dominates the performance in I/O intensive applications, we establish an I/O performance prediction mechanism which consists of a performance database and a prediction algorithm to help users better evaluate and schedule their applications. A tool is also developed to help users automatically generate performance data stored in databases. The experiments show that our multi-storage resource architecture is a promising platform for high performance distributed computing.

High quality video streaming for mobile users is difficult to achieve in some areas of the world due to poor broadband capacity and sparse network coverage. We propose a bandwidth-sharing scheme to allow users with limited uplink bandwidth to borrow idle bandwidth from nearby access points and provide these users the opportunity to experience higher quality video than what their own bandwidth could normally support. We developed a Linux kernel implementation of a multipath less-than-best-effort (MP-LBE) protocol for bandwidth scavenging and demonstrated, through testbed experiments, that video quality may be improved through bandwidth sharing. This may bring us closer to the 'video everywhere' vision even as incremental upgrades are made on broadband Internet infrastructure. © 2015 IEEE.

Given a set of n different deterministic finite state machines (DFSMs) modeling a distributed system, we examine the problem of tolerating f crash or Byzantine faults in such a system. The traditional approach to this problem involves replication and requires n middot f backup DFSMs for crash faults and 2 middot n middot f backup DFSMs for Byzantine faults. For example, to tolerate two crash faults in three DFSMs, a replication based technique needs two copies of each of the given DFSMs, resulting in a system with six backup DFSMs. In this paper, we question the optimality of such an approach and present an approach called (f, m)-fusion that permits fewer backups than the replication based approaches. Given n different DFSMs, we examine the problem of tolerating f faults using just m additional DFSMs. We introduce the theory of fusion machines and provide an algorithm to generate backup DFSMs for both crash and Byzantine faults. We have implemented our algorithms in Java and have used them to automatically generate backup DFSMs for several examples.

In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a compiler system, called APE, for automatic parallelization of scientific and engineering applications on distributed memory computers. APE is built on top of SUIF compiler. It extends SUIF with capabilities in parallelizing loops with non-uniform cross-iteration dependencies, and in handling loops that have indirect access patterns. We have evaluated the effectiveness of SUIF with several CFD test codes, and found that SUIF handles uniform loops over dense and regular data structures very well. For non-uniform loops, an innovative and efficient parallelization approach based on convex theory have been proposed and is being implemented. We have also presented a class of scalable algorithms for parallel distribution and redistribution of unstructured data structures during parallelizing irregular loops.

In computer systems today, speed and responsiveness is often determined by network and storage subsystem performance. Faster, more scalable networking interfaces like Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet provide the scaffolding from which higher performance implementations may be constructed, but new thinking is required about how machines interact with network-enabled storage devices. We have developed a Linux file system called GFS (the Global File System) that allows multiple Linux machines to access and share disk and tape devices on a Fibre Channel or SCSI storage network. We plan to extend GFS by transporting packetized SCSI commands over IP so that any GFS-enabled Linux machine can access shared network devices. GFS will perform well as a local file system, as a traditional network file system running over LP, and as a high-performance cluster file system running over storage networks like Fibre Channel. GFS device sharing provides a key cluster-enabling technology for Linux, helping to bring the availability, scalability, and load balancing benefits of clustering to Linux. Our goal is to develop a scalable, (in number of clients and devices, capacity, connectivity, and bandwidth) server-less file system that integrates IF-based network attached storage (NAS) and Fibre-Channel-based storage area networks (SAN). We call this new architecture Storage Area InterNetworking (SAINT). It exploits the speed and device scalability of SAN clusters, and provides the client scalability and network interoperability of NAS appliances. Our Linux port shows that the GFS architecture is portable across different platforms, and we are currently working on a port to NetBSD.
