The integration of information communication technology with the power grid exposes it to cyber threats. The network state estimation process provides stability to the smart grid. The communication network plays a major role in ensuring the successful transmission of state information. However, these network measurements are vulnerable to malicious attacks. This subsequently affects the network measurement such as associated high transmission delays and packet losses affecting the reliability of the smart grid. In this work, we propose a hybrid physics-based data-driven model that uses data fusion from the state-of-the-art physics-based Network State Estimation model and a data-driven model to detect false data injection attacks in the communication network layer of the smart grid. The performance of the data fusion method is evaluated and the simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the standalone approaches in the detection of bad data. This shows that the proposed scheme is able to improve the cyber-physical security of the communication network layer of the smart grid.

This work demonstrates four grid service use cases using a service-oriented DER Management System within an Energy Grid of Things network. Imposed by a set of rules referred to as the Energy Service Interface, the DER Management System uses IEEE 2030.5 as its primary communication protocol. To simulate the efforts of Grid Operators, Grid Service Providers, and consumers to provide grid services, a co-simulation environment that leverages the GridAPPS-D simulation platform was developed. The results show that a service-oriented DER Management System provides a means of achieving reliable and impactful grid services while protecting customers' privacy and ensuring their agency over their distributed Energy Resources.

Network communication has been proven to be a very important tool and a key factor in the recent development and progress of the power grid operation. It is also considered as the foundation for the smart grid because information and communication are integrated into electricity distribution to achieve reliable and accurate knowledge of the power grid. In previous years, absorbing energy from substations and delivering it to customers was the only type of interaction we knew between utility companies and customers. Presently, the growing connections of small distributed generation units caused by the cost reduction of most of the technologies used in the generation and storage of electrical energy, along with the potential benefits of renewable energy have pushed many researchers to look into the improvement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to ensure a bidirectional flow of power and data. Moreover, the evolution of information and communication technologies and its applications to smart grid have converted the smart grid into a cyber-physical system where vulnerabilities and additional security challenges such as cyber-threats and cyber-attacks have emerged. Previously, we have demonstrated that using machine learning-based processing on data gathered from communication networks and the power grid was a promising solution for detecting cyber threats by implementing a co-simulation of cyber-security for cross-layer strategy.
