The inherent nature of energy,i.e.,physicality,sociality and informatization,implies the inevitable and intensive interaction between energy systems and social *** this perspective,we define "social energy" as a complex sociotechnical system of energy systems,social systems and the derived artificial virtual systems which characterize the intense intersystem and intra-system *** recent advancement in intelligent technology,including artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies,sensing and communication in Internet of Things technologies,and massive high performance computing and extreme-scale data analytics technologies,enables the possibility of substantial advancement in socio-technical system optimization,scheduling,control and *** this paper,we provide a discussion on the nature of energy,and then propose the concept and intention of social energy systems for electrical power.A general methodology of establishing and investigating social energy is proposed,which is based on the ACP approach,i.e., "artificial systems"(A), "computational experiments"(C) and "parallel execution"(P),and parallel system methodology.A case study on the University of Denver(DU) campus grid is provided and studied to demonstrate the social energy *** the concluding remarks,we discuss the technical pathway,in both social and nature sciences,to social energy,and our vision on its future.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger based on peer-to-peer networks, originally used for crypto-currency systems. Blockchains are being used as an enabling technology for decentralised applications in the areas of Internet-of-Things, finance, supply-chain and others. Consistency, data privacy, performance, and energy efficiency are of paramount importance in such applications. The full nodes of public, permissionless blockchains undertake the task of verifying the transactions generated by the network. Full nodes perform operations such as confirming balances, transactions, and history, i.e. mostly database search queries. Consequently, their throughput is crucial for the performance of blockchain systems. In this work, the benefits of accelerating the blockchain search and insert queries by leveraging GPU platforms are studied. An extensive comparison between the most dominant utilized database is provided, i.e. LevelDB, and MegaKV, a high-performance GPU-accelerated database. Realistic operations that take place in blockchain systems are emulated and evaluated over representative scenarios, showing three orders of magnitude gains in throughput and energy efficiency without compromising the security aspect. The extensive comparison between LevelDB and MegaKV indicates that GPU acceleration is an effective solution for runtime and energy efficiency enhancement of blockchain systems, and the integration of the two technologies is a promising field of research. © 2022 The Authors. These days' smart buildings have high intensive information and massive operational parameters, not only extensive power consumption. With the development of computation capability and future 5 G, the ACP theory(i.e., artificial systems,computational experiments, and parallel computing) will play a much more crucial role in modeling and control of complex systems like commercial and academic buildings. The necessity of making accurate predictions of energy consumption out of a large number of operational parameters has become a crucial problem in smart buildings. Previous attempts have been made to seek energy consumption predictions based on historical data in buildings. However, there are still questions about parallel building consumption prediction mechanism using a large number of operational parameters. This article proposes a novel hybrid deep learning prediction approach that utilizes long short-term memory as an encoder and gated recurrent unit as a decoder in conjunction with ACP theory. The proposed approach is tested and validated by real-world dataset, and the results outperformed traditional predictive models compared in this paper.

In the recovery of failed processes in a distributed program, causal logging schemes offer several benefits. These benefits include no rollback of unfailed processes and simple approaches to output commit. Unfortunately, previous approaches to the recovery of multiple simultaneous failures require that the distributed execution be blocked or that recovering processes coordinate. The latter requires assumptions which are not satisfactory. In this paper we present a solution that has neither of these drawbacks.

The increasing complexity, heterogeneity and dynamism of networks, systems, services applications have made our computational/information infrastructure brittle, unmanageable and insecure. This has necessitated the investigation of a new paradigm for design, development and deployment based on strategies used by biological systems to deal with complexity, heterogeneity, and uncertainty, i.e. autonomic computing. This paper introduces the AutoMate project and describes its key components. The overall objective of AutoMate is to investigate key technologies to enable the development of autonomic grid applications that are context aware and are capable of self-configuring, self-composing, self-optimizing and self-adapting. Specifically, it will investigate the definition of autonomic components, the development of autonomic applications as dynamic composition of autonomic components, and the design of key enhancements to existing grid middleware and runtime services to support these applications. © 2003 IEEE.

The paper describes a technique to correct crash faults in large data structures hosted on distributed servers, based on the concept of fused backups. The prevalent solution to this problem is replication. To correct f crash faults among n distinct data structures, replication requires nf additional replicas. If each of the primaries contains O(m) nodes of O(s) size each, this translates to O(nmsf) total backup space. Our technique uses a combination of erasure correcting codes and selective replication to correct f crash faults using just f additional backups consuming O(msf) total backup space, while incurring minimal overhead during normal operation. Since the data is maintained in the coded form, recovery is costly as compared to replication. However, in a system with infrequent faults, the savings in space outweighs the cost of recovery. We explore the theory and algorithms for these fused backups and provide a library of such backups for all the data structures in the Java 6 Collection framework. Our experimental evaluation confirms that fused backups are space-efficient as compared to replication (almost n times), while they cause very little overhead for updates. Many real world distributed systems such as Amazon's Dynamo data store use replication to achieve reliability. An alternate, fusion-based design can result in significant savings in space as well as other resources such as power.

Improving the channel utilization is a significant issue to enhance the performance in WLAN. This paper presents, Pillow Talks MAC (PT-MAC), a novel spectrum sharing mechanism to create an extra channel (pt-channel) for client- to-client transmission in WLAN. Obviously, The basic chal- lenge in our proposal is how pt-channel works concurrently and transparently with AP transmissions. To address the issue, in PT-MAC, selected clients are allowed to contend for pt-channel during uplink transmissions and talk freely under the ongoing downlink transmissions. Based on ad- vanced physical techniques, pt-channel transmitter receives and forwards the AP signals simultaneously within OFDM cyclic prefix, resulting in mixed signals are overheard by re- ceiver in pt-channel. However, the mixed message can be re- covered by pt-decoding system. Simulations and analytical results show that, PT-MAC reuses the spectrum in WLAN and achieves a throughput gain as large as 92% with similar fairness, when the ratio of downlink traffic is about 80%. © 2015 ACM.

Design issues for a high-performance distributed shared memory on symmetrical multiprocessor clusters

Clusters of Symmetrical Multiprocessors (SMPs) have recently become the norm for high-performance economical computing solutions. Multiple nodes in a cluster can be used for parallel programming using a message passing library. An alternate approach is to use a software distributed Shared Memory (DSM) to provide a view of shared memory to the application programmer. This paper describes Strings, a high performance distributed shared memory system designed for such SMP clusters. The distinguishing feature of this system is the use of a fully multi-threaded runtime system, using kernel level threads. Strings allows multiple application threads to be run on each node in a cluster. Since most modern UNIX systems can multiplex these threads on kernel level light weight processes, applications written using Strings can exploit multiple processors on a SMP machine. This paper describes some of the architectural details of the system and illustrates the performance improvements with benchmark programs from the SPLASH-2 suite, some computational kernels as well as a full fledged application. It is found that using multiple processes on SMP nodes provides good speedups only for a few of the programs. Multiple application threads can improve the performance in some cases, but other programs show a slowdown. If kernel threads are used additionally, the overall performance improves significantly in all programs tested. Other design decisions also have a beneficial impact, though to a lesser degree.

In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

The integration of information communication technology with the power grid exposes it to cyber threats. The network state estimation process provides stability to the smart grid. The communication network plays a major role in ensuring the successful transmission of state information. However, these network measurements are vulnerable to malicious attacks. This subsequently affects the network measurement such as associated high transmission delays and packet losses affecting the reliability of the smart grid. In this work, we propose a hybrid physics-based data-driven model that uses data fusion from the state-of-the-art physics-based Network State Estimation model and a data-driven model to detect false data injection attacks in the communication network layer of the smart grid. The performance of the data fusion method is evaluated and the simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the standalone approaches in the detection of bad data. This shows that the proposed scheme is able to improve the cyber-physical security of the communication network layer of the smart grid. © 2024 IEEE.
