In this paper we present the recently granted tripleB-ID project that aims to detect suspicious actions and criminal offences in bank foyers. Based on the situation in Austria and on the actual needs of our partner bank, we deduce scenarios of interest and analyse the technical challenges. As a preliminary work, we furthermore present a fully automated method for the mapping between a static and a dynamic camera and show how this can be used to easily and fast set up a master-slave camera system.

In this paper the properties of the generalized conics are used to create a unified framework for generating various types of the distance fields. The main concept behind this work is a metric that measures the distance from a point to a line segment according to the definition of the ellipse. The proposed representation provides a possibility to efficiently compute the proximity, arithmetic mean of the distances and a space tessellation with regard to the given set of polygonal objects, line segments and points. In addition, the weights can be introduced for objects, their parts and combinations. This fact leads to a hierarchical representation that can be efficiently obtained using the pixel-wise operations. The practical value of the proposed ideas is demonstrated on an example of applications like skeletonization, smoothing and optimal location finding.

The morphological top-hat operator for grayscale images is part of the basic toolbox of mathematical morphology operators. We discuss two ways of generalising the top-hat operator to multi-channel images, such as colour images. The first method presented is the use of a vectorial order in the relevant vector space. The second is based on the demonstration that the top-hat operator can be rewritten in terms of increments. These increments can be replaced by any vectorial distance function, removing the requirement to first impose an order on the vectors. We present examples of the use of the suggested top-hat operators in feature detection in colour images and defect detection in texture.

The paper introduces a novel confocal ellipse-based distance (CED), that is based on the properties of the confocal ellipses. This distance is used to produce a confocal elliptical field (CEF). The Euclidean Distance Transform (EDT) of a single point (called seed) generates a distance field of concentric circles. The sum of two such distance fields of two distinct seed points produces a distance field of confocal ellipses. This fact enables to adapt CED and CEF to the discrete case, referred to as CED-DT and CEF-DT. The properties of the CEF and CEF-DT make them useful for skeletonization, in particular for efficient removal of the spurious branches.

This paper presents an approach for constructing high quality Digital Elevation Maps (DEMs) from dense stereo data. As opposed to classical DEM creation algorithms, the proposed solution uses the sensor models of the stereovision sensor to correct the raw data. The direct and inverse sensor models are found from experiments. The algorithm decomposes the 2D cells containing vertical objects or object boundaries in order to model the objects more precisely. The approach distinguishes between 2 types of cells: cells containing horizontal and vertical objects. For the vertical object cells, connected components in the histogram of heights are found while in the horizontal object cells, the most representative height is determined using a mode-seeking approach similar to mean shift. The 3D reconstructed points are assigned to the cells around it by considering the probability of correspondence based on the 2D Gaussian component of the direct sensor model. In order to eliminate the noise, a similarity measure is computed between each 3D point and cell based on the calculated DEM cell descriptor and is discarded if the similarity score is smaller than a predefined threshold. The algorithm is implemented on the GPU in order to achieve a real-time execution speed and it is evaluated extensively in comparison with other DEM creation algorithms using the latest KITTI stereo benchmark data. The obtained DEM is denser, more accurate and the object boundaries are modeled more precisely.
