We introduce a lexicalized reordering model for hierarchical phrase-based machine translation. The model scores monotone, swap, and discontinuous phrase orientations in the manner of the one presented by Tillmann (2004). While this type of lexicalized reordering model is a valuable and widely-used component of standard phrase-based statistical machine translation systems (Koehn et al., 2007), it is however commonly not employed in hierarchical decoders. We describe how phrase orientation probabilities can be extracted from word-aligned training data for use with hierarchical phrase inventories, and show how orientations can be scored in hierarchical decoding. The model is empirically evaluated on the NIST Chinese→English translation task. We achieve a significant improvement of +1.2 %BLEU over a typical hierarchical baseline setup and an improvement of +0.7 %BLEU over a syntax-augmented hierarchical setup. On a French→German translation task, we obtain a gain of up to +0.4 %BLEU. © 2013 Association for Computational Linguistics

A combination of forward and backward long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) language models is a popular model combination approach to improve the estimation of the sequence probability in the second pass N-best list rescoring in automatic speech recognition (ASR). In this work, we further push such an idea by proposing a combination of three models: a forward LSTM language model, a backward LSTM language model and a bi-directional LSTM based gap completion model. We derive such a combination method from a forward backward decomposition of the sequence probability. We carry out experiments on the Switchboard speech recognition task. While we empirically find that such a combination gives slight improvements in perplexity over the combination of forward and backward models, we finally show that a combination of the same number of forward models gives the best perplexity and word error rate (WER) overall. © 2018 International Speech Communication Association. Currently, in speech translation, the straightforward approach - cascading a recognition system with a translation system - delivers state-of-the-art results. However, fundamental challenges such as error propagation from the automatic speech recognition system still remain. To mitigate these problems, recently, people turn their attention to direct data and propose various joint training methods. In this work, we seek to answer the question of whether joint training really helps cascaded speech translation. We review recent papers on the topic and also investigate a joint training criterion by marginalizing the transcription posterior probabilities. Our findings show that a strong cascaded baseline can diminish any improvements obtained using joint training, and we suggest alternatives to joint training. We hope this work can serve as a refresher of the current speech translation landscape, and motivate research in finding more efficient and creative ways to utilize the direct data for speech translation. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we propose novel extensions of hierarchical phrase-based systems with a discriminative lexicalized reordering model. We compare different feature sets for the discriminative reordering model and investigate combinations with three types of non-lexicalized reordering rules which are added to the hierarchical grammar in order to allow for more reordering flexibility during decoding. All extensions are evaluated in standard hierarchical setups as well as in setups where the hierarchical recursion depth is restricted. We achieve improvements of up to +1.2 %BLEU on a large-scale Chinese→English translation task. © 2012 European Association for Machine Translation.

Determining similar objects is a fundamental operation both in data mining tasks such as clustering and in query-driven object retrieval. By definition of similarity search, query objects can only be imprecise descriptions of what users are looking for in a database, and even high-quality similarity measures can only be approximations of the users' notion of similarity. To overcome these shortcomings, iterative query refinement systems have been proposed. They utilize user feedback regarding the relevance of intermediate results to adapt the query object and/or the similarity measure. We propose an optimization-based relevance feedback approach for adaptable distance measures - focusing on the Earth Mover's Distance. Our technique enables quicker iterative database exploration as shown by our experiments. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Handwritten text is generally captured through two main modalities: off-line and on-line. Each modality has advantages and disadvantages, but it seems clear that smart approaches to handwritten text recognition (HTR) should make use of both modalities in order to take advantage of the positive aspects of each one. A particularly interesting case where the need of this bi-modal processing arises is when an off-line text, written by some writer, is considered along with the on-line modality of the same text written by another writer. This happens, for example, in computer-assisted transcription of old documents, where on-line text can be used to interactively correct errors made by a main off-line HTR system. In order to develop adequate techniques to deal with this challenging bi-modal HTR recognition task, a suitable corpus is needed. We have collected such a corpus using data (word segments) from the publicly available off-line and on-line IAM data sets. In order to provide the Community with an useful corpus to make easy tests, and to establish baseline performance figures, we have proposed this handwritten bi-modal contest. Here is reported the results of the contest with two participants, one of them achieved a 0% classification error rate, whilst the other participant achieved an interesting 1.5%. © 2010, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A Gaussian or log-linear mixture model trained by maximum likelihood may be trained further using discriminative training. It is desirable that the mixture splitting is also done during the discriminative training, to achieve better mixture density distribution. In previous work such a discriminative splitting approach was presented. Similarly, the resolution of a deep neural network may also be increased by splitting. In this paper, discriminative splitting is applied as a way of initializing a linear bottleneck between two layers of a DNN. Experiments for a single hidden layer and six hidden layer cases show the potential of this approach as an alternative method of pre-training for linear bottlenecks for MLP hidden layers. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we dissect the influence of several target-side dependency-based extensions to hierarchical machine translation, including a dependency language model (LM). We pursue a non-restrictive approach that does not prohibit the production of hypotheses with malformed dependency structures. Since many questions remained open from previous and related work, we offer in-depth analysis of the influence of the language model order, the impact of dependency-based restrictions on the search space, and the information to be gained from dependency tree building during decoding. The application of a non-restrictive approach together with an integrated dependency LM scoring is a novel contribution which yields significant improvements for two large-scale translation tasks for the language pairs Chinese-English and German-French. © IWSLT 2011. In this work, multiple hierarchical language modeling strategies for a zero OOV rate large vocabulary continuous speech recognition system are investigated. In our previously proposed hierarchical approach, a full-word language model and a context independent character-level LM (CLM) are directly used during search. The novelty of this work is to jointly model the character-level prior and the pronunciation probabilities, to introduce across-word context into the characterlevel LM, and to properly normalize the character-level LM using prefix-tree based normalization for the hierarchical approach. Significant reductions in-terms of word error rates (WER) on the best full-word Quaero Polish LVCSR system are reported. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper we present an investigation of sequence-discriminative training of deep neural networks for automatic speech recognition. We evaluate different sequence-discriminative training criteria (MMI and MPE) and optimization algorithms (including SGD and Rprop) using the RASR toolkit. Further, we compare the training of the whole network with that of the output layer only. Technical details necessary for a robust training are studied, since there is no consensus yet on the ultimate training recipe. The investigation extends our previous work on training linear bottleneck networks from scratch showing the consistently positive effect of sequence training. © 2015 IEEE.
