Reading order detection and representation is an important task in many digitisation scenarios involving the preservation of the logical structure of a document. The corresponding need for the evaluation of reading order results generated by layout analysis methods poses a particular challenge due to potential deviations between ground truth and actually detected segmentation of the page. To this end a novel evaluation approach that responds to this problem by incorporating region correspondence analysis is proposed. Furthermore, a sophisticated reading order representation scheme is presented and used by the system allowing the grouping of objects with ordered and/or unordered relations. This is a typical requirement for documents with complex layouts such as magazines and newspapers. The evaluation method has been validated using the results of two state-of-the-art OCR / layout analysis systems and a basic top-to-bottom reading order detection algorithm applied on representative samples from the PRImA contemporary and the IMPACT historical document datasets.

Large-scale digitisation of historical documents demands robust methods that cope with the presence of frequent distortions and noisy artefacts. This paper presents a hybrid text line segmentation method that uses a novel data structure and a rule base to combine the strengths of top-down and bottom-up approaches while minimising their weaknesses. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been methodically evaluated in the context of large-scale digitisation using a standardised framework. Results on a diverse dataset show improved performance over top-down and bottom-up approaches as well as over a leading commercially available system.

Document images prove to be a difficult case for standard stereo correspondence approaches. One of the major problem is that document images are highly self-similar. Most algorithms try to tackle this problem by incorporating a global optimization scheme, which tends to be computationally expensive. In this paper, we show that incorporation of layout information into the matching paradigm, as a grouping entity for features, leads to better results in terms of robustness, efficiency, and ultimately in a better 3D model of the captured document, that can be used in various document restoration systems. This can be seen as a divide and conquer approach that partitions the search space into portions given by each grouping entity and then solves each of them independently. As a grouping entity text-lines are preferred over individual character blobs because it is easier to establish correspondences. Text-line extraction works reasonably well on stereo image pairs in the presence of perspective distortions. The proposed approach is highly efficient and matches obtained are more reliable. The claims are backed up by showing their practical applicability through experimental evaluations.

In a number of types of documents, ranging from forms to archive documents and books with annotations, machine printed and handwritten text may be present in the same document image, giving rise to significant issues within a digitisation and recognition pipeline. It is therefore necessary to separate the two types of text before applying different recognition methodologies to each. In this paper, a new approach is proposed which strives towards identifying and separating handwritten from machine printed text using the Bag of Visual Words paradigm (BoVW). Initially, blocks of interest are detected in the document image. For each block, a descriptor is calculated based on the BoVW. The final characterization of the blocks as Handwritten, Machine Printed or Noise is made by a Support Vector Machine classifier. The promising performance of the proposed approach is shown by using a consistent evaluation methodology which couples meaningful measures along with a new dataset.

Historical documents frequently suffer from arbitrary geometric distortions (warping and folds) due to storage conditions, use and to, some extent, the printing process of the time. In addition, page curl can be prominent due to the scanning technique used. Such distortions adversely affect OCR and print-on-demand quality. Previous approaches to geometric restoration either focus only on the correction of page curl or require supplementary information obtained by additional scanning hardware - not practical for existing scans. This paper presents a new approach to detect and restore arbitrary warping and folds, in addition to page curl. Warped text lines and the smooth deformation between them are precisely modelled as primary and secondary flow lines that are then restored to their original linear shape. Preliminary, but representative, experimental results, in comparison to a leading page curl removal method and an industry-standard commercial system, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents an objective comparative evaluation of layout analysis methods for scanned historical documents. It describes the competition (modus operandi, dataset and evaluation methodology) held in the context of ICDAR2011 and the International Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing (HIP2011), presenting the results of the evaluation of four submitted methods. A commercial state-of-the-art system is also evaluated for comparison. Two scenarios are reported in this paper, one evaluating the ability of methods to accurately segment regions and the other evaluating the whole pipeline of segmentation and region classification (with a text extraction goal). The results indicate that there is a convergence to a certain methodology with some variations in the approach. However, there is still a considerable need to develop robust methods that deal with the idiosyncrasies of historical documents.

Future vehicle systems for active pedestrian safety will not only require a high recognition performance, but also an accurate analysis of the developing traffic situation. In this paper, we present a system for pedestrian action classification (walking vs. stopping) and path prediction at short, sub-second time intervals. Apart from the use of positional cues, obtained by a pedestrian detector, we extract motion features from dense optical flow. These augmented features are used in a probabilistic trajectory matching and filtering framework. The vehicle-based system was tested in various traffic scenes. We compare its performance to that of a state-of-the-art IMM Kalman filter (IMM-KF), and for the action classification task, to that of human observers, as well. Results show that human performance is best, followed by that of the proposed system, which outperforms the IMM-KF and the simpler system variants. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

There is a plethora of established and proposed document representation formats but none that can adequately support individual stages within an entire sequence of document image analysis methods (from document image enhancement to layout analysis to OCR) and their evaluation. This paper describes PAGE, a new XML-based page image representation framework that records information on image characteristics (image borders, geometric distortions and corresponding corrections, binarisation etc.) in addition to layout structure and page content. The suitability of the framework to the evaluation of entire workflows as well as individual stages has been extensively validated by using it in high-profile applications such as in public contemporary and historical ground-truthed datasets and in the ICDAR Page Segmentation competition series.

Cardiovascular interventions in the region of the aortic isthmus such as stent-grafting and vessel transposition introduce substantial changes in the deformation properties of the affected vessels. The changes play a fundamental role in the long-term prognosis for any such treatment, but are only poorly understood to date. We explore a fully automated method to quantify the deformation patterns of the thoracic aorta in gated computed tomography sequences. The aorta is segmented by a level set approach that accurately identifies the vessel lumen in each frame of the sequence. Consequently, landmarks on the vessel wall in each frame are registered using a probabilistic method. This allows for the measurement of global and local deformation properties. We evaluate our method on synthetic datasets and report first results of its application on real world data.
