This paper presents an objective comparative evaluation of layout analysis methods in realistic circumstances. It describes the Page Segmentation competition (modus operandi, dataset and evaluation methodology) held in the context of ICDAR2009 and presents the results of the evaluation of four submitted methods. Two state-of-the art methods are also compared as well as the three methods from the ICDA2007 Page Segmentation competition. The results indicate that although methods continue to mature, there is still a considerable need to develop robust methods that deal with everyday documents.

recognition and encoding of digitized historical documents is still a challenging and difficult task. A major problem is the occurrence of unknown glyphs and symbols which might not even exist in modern alphabets. Current pre-trained OCR-methods hardly deliver usable results for such documents. This paper describes an alternative approach and framework for handling printed historical documents without restrictions on the contained alphabets or fonts. The basic idea is to derive all information required for encoding directly from the document itself. This is achieved by extracting a document-specific prototype alphabet of locatable glyphs. Core of the system is a customized clustering method which adapts automatically to new documents by ascertaining appropriate threshold parameters based on the special characteristics of glyphs. This way, the system is able to run without manual interventions and can be integrated into automated mass digitization workflows.

There is a significant need for a realistic dataset on which to evaluate layout analysis methods and examine their performance in detail. This paper presents a new dataset (and the methodology used to create it) based on a wide range of contemporary documents. Strong emphasis is placed on comprehensive and detailed representation of both complex and simple layouts, and on colour originals. In-depth information is recorded both at the page and region level. Ground truth is efficiently created using a new semi-automated tool and stored in a new comprehensive XML representation, the PAGE format. The dataset can be browsed and searched via a Web-based front end to the underlying database and suitable subsets (relevant to specific evaluation goals) can be selected and downloaded.

This paper presents a new semi-supervised clustering framework to the recognition of heavily degraded characters in historical typewritten documents, where off-the-shelf OCR typically fails. The constraints are generated using typographical (collection-independent) domain knowledge and are used to guide both sample (glyph set) partitioning and metric learning. Experimental results using simple features provide encouraging evidence that this approach can lead to significantly improved clustering results compared to simple K-means clustering, as well as to clustering using a state-of-the art OCR engine.

This paper gives an introduction to the Bayesian networks for the exploration of implementing a Bayesian belief network for an automated breast cancer detection support tool. It is intuitive that Bayesian networks can be employed as one viable option for computer-aided detection by representing the relationships between diagnoses, physical findings, laboratory test results, and imaging study findings. This paper brings important entities such as Radiologists, image Processing Scientists, Data Base Specialists and Applied Mathematicians on a common platform. A brief background concerning causal networks, probability theory and Bayesian networks is given. Available computational tools and platforms are described. Steps towards building a Bayesian Belief Network Implementation are introduced.

Pedestrian detection is a rapidly evolving area in computer vision with key applications in intelligent vehicles, surveillance, and advanced robotics. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of the art from both methodological and experimental perspectives. The first part of the paper consists of a survey. We cover the main components of a pedestrian detection system and the underlying models. The second (and larger) part of the paper contains a corresponding experimental study. We consider a diverse set of state-of-the-art systems: wavelet-based AdaBoost cascade [74], HOG/ linSVM [11], NN/LRF [75], and combined shape-texture detection [23]. Experiments are performed on an extensive data set captured onboard a vehicle driving through urban environment. The data set includes many thousands of training samples as well as a 27-minute test sequence involving more than 20,000 images with annotated pedestrian locations. We consider a generic evaluation setting and one specific to pedestrian detection onboard a vehicle. Results indicate a clear advantage of HOG/ linSVM at higher image resolutions and lower processing speeds, and a superiority of the wavelet-based AdaBoost cascade approach at lower image resolutions and (near) real-time processing speeds. The data set (8.5 GB) is made public for benchmarking purposes. © 2009 IEEE.

A major component of performance evaluation of layout analysis methods is the comparison of ground truth regions with regions resulting from segmentation methods. The description of document regions must be both accurate in describing complex layouts and efficient in view of the large number of region comparisons that must be performed. Previous approaches favour either accuracy or efficiency, resulting in an impractical compromise. This paper presents an improved approach that uses polygons to accurately describe both segmentation and ground truth regions. Polygonal descriptions are efficiently compared using a rectangular interval based decomposition. This approach has been validated using data from the ICDAR page segmentation competitions.

This paper presents a novel focus-of-attention strategy for monocular pedestrian recognition. It uses Bayespsila rule to estimate the posterior for the presence of a pedestrian in a certain (rectangular) image region, based on motion parallax features. This posterior is used as a parameter to control the amount of regions of interest (ROIs) that is passed to subsequent verification stages. For the latter, we use a state-of-the-art pedestrian recognition scheme which consists of multiple modules in a cascade architecture. We obtain optimized settings for the control parameters of the combined cascade system by a sequential ROC convex hull technique. Experiments are conducted on image data captured from a moving vehicle in an urban environment. We demonstrate that the proposed focus-of-attention strategy reduces the false positives of an otherwise identical monocular pedestrian recognition system by a factor of two, at equal detection rates. The overall system maintains processing rates close to real-time.

In statistical machine translation (SMT) research, phrase-based methods have been receiving more interest in recent years. In this paper, we first give a brief survey of phrase-based SMT framework, and then make detailed comparisons of two typical implementations: alignment template approach and standard phrase-based approach. At last, we propose an improved model to integrate alignment template into standard phrase-based SMT as a new feature in a log-linear model. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the baseline method.
