This paper gives a robust motion detection and tracking solution for a video surveillance application on an airport's apron. As an outdoor application, the system must be capable of adapting to a wide range of weather conditions and illumination changes. Furthermore, the achromaticity of the scene and the presence of occlusions in the tracking process are issues considered in the selection of the motion detector and tracking system respectively. We propose an adapted mixture of Gaussians model with RGB colour normalisation to detect mobile objects in the scene and a region tracking method based on significant mobile object features to track individuals and vehicles on the selected airport's apron. The performance of the proposed motion detector is evaluated using pixel-based performance metrics and compared with other existing methods. The capability of the application to handle partial occlusions is tested on the region tracker.

Two medieval manuscripts are recorded, investigated and analyzed by philologists in collaboration with computer scientists. Due to mold, air humidity and water the parchment is partially damaged and consequently hard to read. In order to enhance the readability of the text, the manuscript pages are imaged in different spectral bands ranging from 360 to 1000nm. A registration process is necessary for further imageprocessing methods which combine the information gained by the different spectral bands. Therefore, the images are coarsely aligned using rotationally invariant features and an affine transformation. Afterwards, the similarity of the different images is computed by means of the normalized cross correlation. Finally, the images are accurately mapped to each other by the local weighted mean transformation. The algorithms used for the registration and results in enhancing the texts using Multivariate Spatial Correlation are presented in this paper. copyright by EURASIP.

We introduce a semi-automatic tracking method that can be utilized for the analysis of facial markers in the medical condition of facial palsy. Tracking of markers will help medical physicians in evaluating this medical condition quantitatively. We use particle filtering to track markers towards measuring distances needed to evaluate the degree of facial palsy. We show that by employing tracking methods, the analysis time is reduced without losing the high accuracy of the results.

Autonomous model building is a crucial trend in model based methods like AAMs. This paper introduces an approach that deals with non-linearities by detecting distinct sub-parts in the data. Sub-models each representing an individual sub-part are derived from a minimum description length criterion. Thereby the resulting clique of models is more compact and obtains a better generalization behavior than a single model. The proposed AAM clique generation deals with non-linearities in the data in a generic information theoretic manner reducing the necessity of user interaction during training.

A method for the elimination of cracks in infrared reflectograms is presented. Infrared reflectograms show the underdrawing - the basic concept of the artist drawn on the ground layer - in ancient wood panel paintings. Caused by the different mechanical behaviour of the panel and the covering ground layer during the aging of the painting, cracks appear. Cracks not only disturb the appearance of a painting, but are also a problem for segmenting the lines and strokes of the underdrawing. A method based on mathematical morphology, namely morphological reconstruction with viscosity, is used to eliminate the cracks while keeping as much detail as possible in the brush strokes. A priori information that the cracks are usually thinner than the brush strokes and have a preferred orientation is taken into account.
