This paper introduces a new class of switching vector median filter. The proposed algorithm first uses four directional masks to analyze the color difference between the central pixel and its neighborhood pixels in the RGB color space and classify each color pixel into noisy pixel or noise-free one, and then employs the standard vector median filtering operations in the detected noisy locations to restore the corrupted pixels and leave the noise-free ones unchanged. The simulation results show that the proposed method excellently suppresses impulsive noise as well as preserving the image details well, and significantly outperforms the existing vector filtering solutions in terms of both the objective measures and the perceptual visual quality.

Aiming at the characters of weak and small targets in infrared images, an algorithm based on Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVM) is presented to fuse long-wave and mid-wave infrared images and detect targets. image intensity surfaces for the neighborhood of every pixel of the original long-wave infrared image and mid-wave infrared are well-fitted by mapped LS-SVM respectively. And long-wave and mid-wave infrared image gradient images are obtained by LS-SVM based on radial basis kernels function. Fusion rule is set up according to the features of gradient images. At last, segment fused image and targets can be detected with contrast threshold. Compared with wavelet fusion detection algorithm and morphological fusion detection algorithm, when a target is affected by baits, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach in the paper based on LS-SVM to fuse and detect weak and small target is reliable and efficient.

In this paper, we propose a new image codec, which called embedded zerotree wavelet coefficients envelop coding (EZWCEC). The coefficients envelop is characterized by describing the global tendency of the significant wavelet coefficients. Based on the empirical analysis and experimental results, our EZWCEC algorithm restores the trend of the significant wavelet coefficients and estimates the magnitude of some insignificant coefficients on the decoder. Unlike other zerotree coding algorithms such as Said and Pearlman's SPIHT using three lists, EZWCEC only uses two lists during encoding and decoding. So the memory requirement for the hardware implementation is reduced significantly. Although PSNR values for EZWCEC are lower than SPIHT's and JPEG2000's, our experiment results have shown that EZWCEC can dramatically improve the visual quality of reconstructed at low bit rates (e.g., below 0.1bpp).

Efficient reconfigurable VLSI architecture for 1-D 5/3 and 9/7 wavelet transforms adopted in JPEG2000 proposal, based on lifting scheme is proposed. The embedded decimation technique based on fold and time multiplexing, as well as embedded boundary data extension technique, is adopted to optimize the design of the architecture. These reduce significantly the required numbers of the multipliers, adders and registers, as well as the amount of accessing external memory, and lead to decrease efficiently the hardware cost and power consumption of the design. The architecture is designed to generate an output per clock cycle, and the detailed component and the approximation of the input signal are availab.e alternately. Experimental simulation and comparison results are presented, which demonstrate that the proposed architecture has lower hardware complexity, thus it is adapted for embedded applications. The presented architecture is simple, regular and scalab.e, and well suited for VLSI implementation.

This paper introduces the new qualitative and quantitative methods, which can diagnose breast tumors. Qualitative methods include blood vessel display inside and outside of pathological changes part of breast, display of equivalent pixel curves at the part of pathological changes and display of breast tumor image edge. Accordingly, three feature extraction operators are proposed, i.e. the combination operators of anisotropic gradient and smoothing operator, an improved Sobel operator and an edge sharpening operator. Furthermore, quantitative diagnostic approaches are discussed based on blood and oxygen contents according to abundant clinical data and pathological mechanism of breast tumors. A novel Parallel-Based Lifting Algorithm (PBLA) for Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), exploiting the parallelism of arithmetic operations in all lifting steps, is proposed in this paper. It leads to reduce the critical path latency of computation, and to reduce the complexity of hardware implementation as well. The detailed derivation on the proposed algorithm, as well as the resulting Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) architecture, is introduced, taking the 9/7 DWT as an example but without loss of generality. In comparison with the Conventional Lifting Algorithm Based Implementation (Clab.), the critical path latency of the proposed architecture is reduced by more than half from (4Tm + 8Ta)to Tm + 4Ta, and is competitive to that of Convolution-Based Implementation (CBI), but the new implementation will save significantly in hardware. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture has good performance in both increasing working frequency and reducing area.

This paper introduces an audio watermark (WM) decoding scheme that performs a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based supervised learning followed by a blind decoding. The decoding process is modelled as a two-class classification procedure. Initially, wavelet decomposition is performed on the training audio signals, and the decomposed audio frames watermarked with +1 and -1 constitute the training sets for Class 1 and Class 2, respectively. The developed system enables to extract embedded WM data at lower than -40dB Watermark-to-Signal- Ratio (WSR) levels with more than 95% accuracy and it is robust to degradations including audio compression (MP3, AAC), and additive noise. It is shown that the proposed audio WM decoder eliminates the drawbacks of correlation-based methods.

In this paper, a line-based scan image compression algorithm with low complexity was presented. The algorithm was based on Christos Chrysalis's line-based wavelet transformation coding. There was not image tiling in the algorithm. The supposed algorithm modeled with contexts for different subband after quantifying wavelet coefficients uniformly. A modified Golomb-Rice algorithm with low complexity was adopted as entropy coder. The experiment shows that the memory requirement of the algorithm is far less than that of the SPIHT in compressing images with huge size. The complexity of the entropy coding of the algorithm is reduced largely. The algorithm is especially appropriate for remote sensing image compression system with power and space limited.
