This paper introduces the design and realization of a wearable device for dietary and physical activity monitoring. This design is based on technological advances in microelectronics and our previous prototypes which have verified the system concept. From our results, it is shown that the device meets all functional requirements as well as size and power consumption constraints essential to participants' use. With further technological development, we believe that the size of the system can be reduced and accurate and objective dietary assessments will become possible. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a 2D Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) based single-channel source separation algorithm that emphasizes perceptually important components of audio. Unlike the existing methods, the proposed scheme performs a psychoacoustic pre-processing on the mixture spectrogram in order to suppress audio components that are not critical to human hearing sensation while amplifying the perceptually important ones. This yields the auditory spectrogram referred as sonogram of the observed audio mixture and the individual sources are then extracted by 2D NMF. Test results reported in terms of Signal-to-Distortion-Ratio (SDR), Signal-to-Inference-Ratio (SIR) and Signal-to-Artifact-Ratio (SAR) show that the proposed perceptually enhanced separation improves the quality of decomposed audio sources by 1.5-6.5 dB with a reduced computational complexity.

Most paralinguistic analysis tasks are lacking agreed-upon evaluation procedures and comparability, in contrast to more 'traditional' disciplines in speech analysis. The INTERSPEECH 2010 Paralinguistic Challenge shall help overcome the usually low compatibility of results, by addressing three selected sub-challenges. In the Age Sub-Challenge, the age of speakers has to be determined in four groups. In the Gender Sub-Challenge, a three-class classification task has to be solved and finally, the Affect Sub-Challenge asks for speakers' interest in ordinal representation. This paper introduces the conditions, the Challenge corpora "aGender" and "TUM AVIC" and standard feature sets that may be used. Further, baseline results are given. © 2010 ISCA.

Cardiovascular interventions in the region of the aortic isthmus such as stent-grafting and vessel transposition introduce substantial changes in the deformation properties of the affected vessels. The changes play a fundamental role in the long-term prognosis for any such treatment, but are only poorly understood to date. We explore a fully automated method to quantify the deformation patterns of the thoracic aorta in gated computed tomography sequences. The aorta is segmented by a level set approach that accurately identifies the vessel lumen in each frame of the sequence. Consequently, landmarks on the vessel wall in each frame are registered using a probabilistic method. This allows for the measurement of global and local deformation properties. We evaluate our method on synthetic datasets and report first results of its application on real world data.

This paper developed two learning procedure, respectively, based on the orthogonal least squares (OLS) method and the "Innovation- Contribution" criterion (ICc) proposed newly. The orthogonal use of the stepwise-regression algorithm of the ICc mages the model structure independent of the selected term sequence and reduces the cluster region further as compared with orthogonal least squares (OLS). as the Bayesian information criteria (BIC) method is incorporate into the clustering process of the ICc, except for the widths of Gaussian functions, it has no other parameter that need tuning ,but the user is required to specify the tolerance ρ, which is relevant to noises and will be difficult to implement in the real system, for the OLS algorithm. The two algorithms are employed to the Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNN) to compare its performance for different noise nonlinear dynamic systems. Experimental results show that they provide an efficient approximation to the required results for fitting models, but the clustering procedures of the ICc is substantially better solutions than does the OLS. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Advanced mammalian target identification derived from the perception of target's manifold and measurement manifolddistance. It does not rely on object's segmented accuracy, not depend on target's variety model, and adapt to a range of changes on targets. In this paper, based on the existed manifold learning algorithm, set up a new bionic automatic target recognition model, discussed the targets manifold knowledge acquisition and the knowledge expression architecture, gave a manifold knowledge-based new method for automatic target recognition. Experiments show that the new method has a strong adaptability to targets various transform, and has a very high correctly identification probability. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

A novel online tracking method is proposed based on the response of feature combination (RFC) and relative position map (RPM). First, large numbers of features around the target are achieved after some designed filtering, then a suboptimal feature combination obtained by a given feature selection criteria can be used for next frame. The distinction between the target and background is maximized in the result image. Based on this distinction the target can be segmented out easily. While around the target there always exists some similar regions and will be residue left after filtering. To depress these clutters, the position relationship of local maximal response points cased by the similar regions is recorded as RPM and compared to the last frame. At last, the new feature combination is updated based on the new background around the target. The experiment using small infrared target sequence with different background texture conditions demonstrates the robustness of the new method. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Selective visual attention can direct our gaze rapidly towards objects of interest in the view. Better coverage of target region for attention can better serve for recognition. A novel method for evaluating how well the attended regions contribute to the recognition of the target based on SIFT descriptors is proposed in this paper. The method is used to evaluate the attended regions extracted by some visual attention mechanisms on real remote sensor images with different geometric and photometric transformations and for different scene types. The evaluation method proposed in this paper give an explicit, accurate and robust expression about the attended region in visual attention mechanisms and we believe this method could be applicable in visual attention mechanisms in the future work. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The new hit-aim positioning algorithm based on template matching is proposed, which aim at airport hit-aim location problem in the case of that the airport presents in infrared images partially. In the algorithm, the homogeneity transformation based on co-occurrence matrices was brought forward to enlarge the difference between the airfield runway and background firstly. After the transformed image being segmented, morphologic filter was applied to the segmented binary image to improve airfield runway completeness by filling the small hole in the runway region, and to suppress background clutter by clearing up the remnant fragment in the background area. Later, the multiple templates matching method, in which the distribution pattern among the templates was utilized to improve the matching reliability and positioning precision, was performed to match the weighted structure templates with the extracted binary image. The hit-aim was able to be located indirectly with relatively position relation between the hit-aim and templates. The preparation method for weighted structure templates based on the satellite visible image was also given. The experiment shows that the proposed algorithm can achieved high matching rate, and have rather robustness to scale and rotation. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

A novel approach is proposed to estimate the parameters of rotational motion blur. Firstly, the rotational blur was changed into translational motion blur by geometric transformation from Cartesian coordinate system to polar coordinate system. The characteristic of the translational motion blurred image in frequency domain was concluded. Then, the characteristic was further analyzed by a new definition of point spread function (PSF). Based on this, an object function was derived to describe the relationship between the parameter and the characteristic. At last, the statistical optimal parameter of the blur motion was obtained by traversing through the resolution space of the object function. The comparing experiment results demonstrate that the new method has better accuracy than traditional ones. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
